Homecoming Was the 2012 reboot pointless?

Hi. Not really. It was way too early to tell the origin again, that's for sure. But I liked the first movie and to me, it had and did many things better than Raimi. Peter was still socially awkward but relatable, there was humor but not in a persistent an unnecessary way, the tone was more serious, I prefer Sheen's Uncle Ben and I certainly prefer Garfield's Peter and Spider-man. And I also prefer Stone's Gwen in every scene much better than Dunst's Mary Jane.

Then again, The Amazing Spider-man 2 was a disaster, but also was Spider-man 3. But the first movie had so many good things that at least it was worth the while. I was still hoping that they would get back on track in the third, but oh well... regarding superhero movies, you gotta live one film at a time and enjoy them that way. Cheers.

Pointless? No.

I don't think the ASM series made the point Sony was intending but it definitely made a point regardless. That is, they shouldn't be making Spider-Man movies any longer.

It's funny when you look at the movies now after they've been completed and then you go back and look at all the things Sony said they were going to change for the new series as an improvement over what they did before.

*Untold Story aka the parents subplot
*Focusing on character development rather than just action and scaling back to one-villain movies
*Feeling they rushed Peter through HS too quickly in the first series
*More practical stunts, less cgi

I'm sure there is more, but it's all I can think of at the moment. Point is, some things they improved upon but they were in the minority, instead they created a whole new set of problems and even failed to correct the issues that were present at times in the original trilogy. I was excited about the new series because of the potential they had to be innovative and make better Spidey movies but they squandered it. Similar plot points, studio meddling, editing and production issues, following the trend and using the 'copy and paste' method.

Clearly rebooting was a mistake. That is clear as day now that we have seen the aftermath.

The 2012 reboot wasn't pointless.

The 2014 sequel was a mistake.... so much potential in this franchise and it was just ****ed up.

I thought that the reboot was needed, but not necessary as early as 2012. I like TASM2 a lot better because it feels much bolder than TASM1. that movie was like Sony taking babysteps through material that was already explored and us having to watch until they got to any worthwhile things. still, the series as a whole is like 60 percent cringe worthy

If this series is like 60% cringe worthy then the first series sm 1-3 was like 80% cringe worthy lol

It is your opinion if you think the OT was cringeworthy, but 80%?

Yes it was pointless. No question about it. We could have been spared two weak Spider-Man movies.

But we also wouldn't be getting... whatever the **** is happening now.

I'd say 'misguided' would be a better word.

misguided is the best term id say yes.

The biggest problem is they kept going with this "untold story" about his parents, when in reality the REAL untold story people wanted to see was his romance with Gwen Stacy culminating in her death by the hands of NORMAN. This parents nonsense took up the majority of the middle of part 2 and it hindered it severely, there is NO spider-man in the film for roughly 30+ minutes it feels like in that middle section. Its sad that myself and many others can draw up a simple full proof plan for where these movies should have went after the first one which while not perfect left alot of potential to tell the right stories and tell them well, which all got tossed for this quick fix world building crap.

What SHOULD have been done from 2 on is:

ASM2: Have it be an electro story ( i personally would have cast Aaron Paul as he is great at playing that angry, underappreciated role) and have it paraellel Peters story in some way. involve Norman AND Harry, build Gwen and Peters relationship together and with Harry throughout the film. DROP the parents angle, IF you still wanted to tie up that loose end do it quickly int he beginning of the film and certainly dont do with some insane underground train nonsense that grinds your movie to a hault. Could have been handled in 4 minutes if it HAD to be addressed and for gods sake, please get Uncle Ben back into the film as far as his importance. Anyhow an Electro story where he actually has some character where Norman pulls his strings would have been solid, while norman eventually becomes the goblin at the end of the film would have been perfect

ASM3: All Green Goblin story while introducing other members of the sinister six here and there in cameos, etc. Also introduce the symbiote. Still keep the focus on The Green Goblin (the real one) and Spider-Man/Peter and gwen. Ultimately ending in the correct finale on the brooklyn bridge. At the end you could have a post credit of the Goblin planning the sinister six as he knows he will have Spider-Man after him for Gwens death.

ASM4: The Sinister Six - This is the big event film Sony coveted yet it was not rushed and naturally progressed with the story. introduce mj and eddie brock here too. In this film have Pete get his ass kicked by the sinister six only to end up having the symbiote help him (just like in SSM) however in the end he gets rid of it and shows he can defeat the six on his own, post credit scene is Eddie Brock getting attached to the symbiote.

ASM5: Venom Here is your chance to do a venom movie right. OR hold off on venom only teasing him and do Kravens last hunt while Spidey still wears a cloth black costume. Then you have ASM6 with Venom. though i feel like Venom would be a better follow up to S6.

That right there while sloppily written and put together as i rushed writing, is a far better and more sensible plan than anything Sony has dreamed up and this took me less than 10 minutes to type. You get a Amazing Spider-Man 2 that is much more focused and has the breathing room to tell a sensible story, as well as your follow up film which being the death of gwen would be a huge deal...until you get your sinister six payoff movie. Then the only way to follow that up is with a villain that is popular enough on his own in Venom. Why the hell couldnt anyone at sony come up with this again?

So the reboot wasnt pointless it was just poorly planned and thoughtout.

Isn't it better that Sony made a new series to mess with instead of messing with raimi's universe even more?

No way they were selling after Spider-Man 3, so Sony either makes a bad Spider-Man 4 and 5 or a bad reboot series, at least your favourite movies were spared right? the TASM series' point to even the most basic extent was basically to get the rights back to marvel.

I still really like TASM/2 but it's pretty obvious to me that the worst parts of SM3 were slowly starting to resurface and grow even bigger in sonys vision and if sinister six were to go ahead in the fashion that the leaks state then it would have been out and out the worst CBM ever based purely on the content. It's akin to origins messing up dead pool but on such a larger scale. Crazy really.

Female venom, comic relief sandman, Channing Tatum venom, Gwen as carnage, SS laughing at Spider-Man's suit and him creating venom, female team up film. Looks like Webb pushed back against Sony in a similar way to Raimi and they dumped him. Same goes for Garfield.

Spider-Man is in shambles at the moment but in a twisted way it's the TASM series that protected the OT from becoming a boxset of disaster

Not really. The Shoemaker movies are in the same universe as Burton's. But their crappiness does not reflect back on the Burton films. Fans are able to separate the two sections of the previous franchise despite being the same universe. I assume the same would've gone for Spidey.

Considering what has happened, yes. It's been pointless.

Because Sony haven't learnt from their mistakes regarding them interfering then 'yes'. I'm glad the TASM movies have happened though, they've opened my eyes to the great cast they've had (Garfield and Stone in particular) so that I can look forward to their roles in other films.

It wasn't pointless at all because the amount of potential in the fresh reboot idea is just unbelievable but sony didn't have the guts or the intelligence to plan the direction beyond the dark knight and the avengers

and I don't think keeping the original continuity to the original films would have changed anything either since that wouldn't have garanteed quality or even that audiences would gel with the recast once toby and Raimi left

No. If Avi hadn't screwed everything up by rushing the story (AGAIN!!!!!) they could have pulled off a very sucessful series.

It wasn't pointless in nature, just by what has happened.

Hi, Kahran Ramsus. I'd say that the real mistake was screwing the sequel. After Spider-man 3 I was glad they were rebooting.

spiderman2, I'm not sure about the percentages, but Raimi's cheese went too repetitive throughout three movies, yes.

I think a lot of people would argue that while SM3 had its flaws, it wasn't bad enough to warrant a reboot.
