Say Hello to the Goodbye Weapon

The crowd is getting ugly. Soldiers roll up in a Hummer. Suddenly, the whole right half of your body is screaming in agony. You feel like you've been dipped in molten lava. You almost faint from shock and pain, but instead you stumble backwards -- and then start running. To your surprise, everyone else is running too. In a few seconds, the street is completely empty.
You've just been hit with a new nonlethal weapon that has been certified for use in Iraq -- even though critics argue there may be unforeseen effects.

As someone who's been hit by two rubber bullets, I can tell you that there is NO need for this.

Maxwell's Demon was telling me earlier about Tesla's Scalar weapon.
basically a death ray, but this is pretty scary in it's own right.

This is now on my christmas list. Next to a Battlestar and a brand spanking new dictionary.

This new anti-riot weapon is like the sonic gun from The Minority Report.

but with oodles more pain.
the capacity for misuse is astounding.
everything from supression to interrogation.

That is extremely disturbing.

They say that after 5 seconds people automatically run. I wonder how long someone would last if they were held in place. Eventually something would **** up so bad that they died.

ANYTHING has the astounding capacity for misuse. Even brass-knuckles or high-powered rifles.

But I wouldn't stand in the way of developing more non-lethal weapons, even if there's a high potential for abuse.

I can see the dangers of it being misused, but I can also see the potential of it to stop an angry mob from killing each other and causing mayhem. I was going to ask, wouldn't tear gas be just as effective still? But I suppose it's to easy to protect yourself from gas while causing damage...

thats frightening.. I'm going to have nightmares now..

Perhaps, if you're faced with your garden variety mob on a rioting rampage. But this weapon has warfare potential as well against armed enemies whom probably wouldn't stop pulling the triggers when being lobbed by tear gas canisters.

And in urban warfare especially, the damage to surrounding infrastructure is absolutely zero.

True enough, I guess I was strictly thinking about citizens rampaging.

While sounding somewhat scary, if it can be proven as a non-lethal weapon alternative then I am all for it. The biggest problem I see here is that there could easily be numerous injuries sustained by people running away and getting trampled by others and whatnot.

COOL.

I want one.

so....when a crowd of people affected by this weapon reflexively scatter at all costs while enduring this incredible pain, what happens to those who fall to the ground in the stampede, unable to get up to flee, but still within the range of the weapon?

Then they'd probably become horribly injured. I'd imagine the weapon would only be fired in short bursts, though.

Sounds like the Orgazmirader...only, it causes pain. Not pleasure.

Wouldnt somebody go into shock from the pain if they keep it on??

I'd imagine long-term exposure would cause some kind of nerve damage. Not to mention severe radiation burns on your skin.

Agreed.

IMO if this is indeed non-lethal then it's got a thumbs up from me. In a place like Iraq where some ppl strap bombs to themselves, things like this are a far cry better than the alternative. If a crowd started rioting in a place like that with innocents, and you're a soldier and have seconds to decide how to calm it down, something that's non-lethal and drives everyone back out of pure reflex is better than potential lethal force. I do see it eventually killing someone tho and drawing fire for that, but on paper it sounds good.
