Superman Returns WB, Singer, and the Sequel

Trailer,

It is. Again, Episodes II and III cost around 100 million a piece. Box Office Mojo reports 115 million for each but it's wrong. Episode I cost the most.

So Matt since one Movie did not do as well as expected everyone that supported it should be fired at the WB ?

One movie?

More like every movie.

The two animated movies WB release this year - bomb.

Poseidon - Horrible bomb.

Lady in the Water - bomb.

Superman Returns - Huge disappointment.

V for Vendetta is really the only success WB had this year...and even that was a modest success.

And the kicker is, they really have nothing in the fourth quarter to recoup their losses with.

I wouldn't bet my shoe on Horn staying or leaving, same goes for Singer. You never know whose going to take the fall in a situation like this.

But Matt knows it all he is Mr. know it all

Matt,

Everyone knew that Dead Man's Chest was going to clean house. What planet are you on? It was predicted as far back as last summer that Dead Man's Chest and Da Vinci were going to be the likely winners in this summer's box office.

And of course WB didn't expect Poseidon to flop but let's be honest, did anyone have any interest in the film 6 months out before it's release? It had no buzz whatsoever.

People, people, it's not your money, chill out.
It's a public company, it reached for the moon and just got to the ionosphere.
It's going to make a profit on this movie, and that's all that counts.
Movie making in today's high risk financial climate, is not for the squeamish.
If WB balks at doing a sequel, that's their perrogative, perhaps they should auction off movie rights in that case.
Whatever happens, none of you are privy to the numbers, all the numbers mentioned are either guesses, or partially informed opinions at best.

Chill.

Those are highly deflated figures. Just look at the movie and their effects.....

115 Million for Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith (2 1/2 hours over 2000 FX shots)

110 Million for Fantastic Four.......(1 1/2 hours...maybe 700 FX shots)

See what I'm saying?

You're right. There is no real way to predict it. Horn could get fired, The CFO could get fired, they could fire Singer, they could keep the entire staff and move forward, or there could be an entire regime change at WB. Who knows?

First you say you think for sure Horn will take the fall now your saying who knows ? Typical

Are you kidding? Go over to Misc Films and see what Trilligors and Cinemaman posted in the Superman vs Pirates thread. There are dozens of credible articles from Box Office Analysts about how Superman will sweep the floor with Pirates.

No, I said if I were a share holder I would not want Horn handing out my money, then I posted reasoning as to why share holders would likely want Horn to step down.

Pickle,

Trust me, Episode III didn't cost 115 million to make. I was in contact with a person connected to ILM during it's production. He specifically stated to me last summer that the reported budget of Episode III is wrong. It in fact, with all the visual effects, cost only 100 million to make.

Episode I was the test bed for everything. Lucas and ILM took notes and made sure that they could bring in Episodes II and III cheaper than Episode I.

Everybody needs to step back and take a deep breath. Why are we getting testy about the budget and about opinion.

Matt,

Alot of people predicted Superman would be number one. But people also predicted that Dead Man's Chest was going to be huge too. Alot of people just thought that both films would boom at the box office.

Only one did.

Now look at next summer in the month of May, choose between Shrek The Third, Spider-Man 3, and Pirates 3?

I have no clue how to predict that outcome considering they all come out in the same month. Someone on the list has to blink soon.

Bottom line is that WB expected more at the box office, "500 million" worldwide, it will fall about 100million short of that. They definately expected at least 200 million in the US, most likely, didn't even think twice about that level.

I doubt most here knows what opinion means as most arguments come from one person thinking they are right over everyone else

I anticipate Shrek jumping back to July. Pirates I doubt would, when Disney is still sipping champagne and celebrating one of the biggest successes in box office history and already crushed what was sure to be one of the biggest hits in box office history. I don't think Spider-Man can get away with the move, as it is still 8 months off and yet already highly anticipated. Shrek on the other hand has had very little PR at this point. It could pull the move off.

The funny thing is, any of those movies could jump back to July 4th and sweep floor with Transformers (or more likely scare it into changing its release date) and use the holiday to dominate the summer box office.

Showtime,

You're absolutely correct. I love Superman Returns but it didn't light the box office world on fire. Yes, WB should be skeptical about a sequel. At the same time, they've invested too much into relaunching the franchise to give it up this soon.

They have to have another go at it. And if it does fail on the same level as Superman Returns, in terms of box office, then they should let the character go for a long while or forever.

But, that time is not now.

Matt,

It's true, anyone of those films could kill Transformers. But, if Bay delivers on Transformers in all areas, then I could see Transformers winning next summer.

Again, it's a big "if" considering the likes of Shrek, Spider-Man, Sparrow, and Harry Potter all in the same summer. But, Transformers could do some serious damage.

I agree, they know where the key area's are to fix, they will give it another shot
I'm still surprised we are sitting talking about a Superman movie not crossing $200M domestic

Bay seldom does deliver though. More often than not he makes an over hyped melodrama it seems.

But yea, Transformers could appeal to 20/30 somethings trying to relive their childhood and bring in a whole new generation of youngsters.

It could do well...but I doubt it will.

I think the only reason that no one else has tried to take over the holiday weekend thus far is Bay's power in Hollywood.

hunter,

So am I. It should've crossed 200 million. And I still think WB should've launched the film in November after they saw the kind of film they had. Let's be honest, it's not a summer film at all.

It belongs in the same Thanksgiving time slot as the Harry Potter franchise. It would've made 250 million easy in that time slot this year.

I have been looking over this entire back and forth and am aware of most others, not only is one person thinking they are right over everyone else, it is everyone else thinking they are right over one person or in some instances a handful. It works both ways for both sides. It's opinion, and some people can't grasp that fact.
