And people wonder why I'm still in favor of capital punishment.

I understand completely. Some people prove themselves too dangerous for society to tolerate. I don't care if he has 100 excuses about why his life was bad and why he was angry, none of them are even close to being good enough.

I'm just very sad for the parents. I hope the authorities find whoever is responsible for this.

Police Believe Same Man Stabbed Boy, 18-Year-Old Woman in Brooklyn

d1zg0fcjmcqjlxn7sxby.jpg

The NYPD believes the man that who stabbed a six-year-old boy to death in Brooklyn Sunday evening also killed an 18-year-old woman in the same area Friday night.

"We have deployed additional officers into that area for the children who walk to and from the various schools . . . and we will continue doing that going forward," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a press conference Monday evening, according to the New York Post. "It would be advisable to be extra cautious."

Friday night, Tanaya Grant-Copeland, 18, was stabbed 32 times in her back and abdomen and left on a street in East New York. A taxi driver found her and drove her to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Two days later, just four blocks away, Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, and Mikayla Capers, 7, were repeatedly stabbed in an elevator. Avitto later died, and Capers remains in critical condition with a collapsed lung.

Police say the same knives were used in both attacks. The knife model, the Dura Edge by Imperial Knife, has not been manufactured since 2004, according to the NYPD.

"The knives were similar in the sense that they were both kitchen-type slicing knifes and had similar-looking black plastic handles and long blades," said NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis.

Police described the suspect as a man around 25 to 35 years old, about six-feet tall, with a heavy build. He was last seen wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Albuquerque Grasshopper Swarms Are Showing Up On Weather Radar

jdfblrjs56xfzqxxrjcn.jpg

According to The National Weather Service, the worst infestation of grasshoppers to hit Albuquerque in twenty years is so dense that it's showing up on weather radars like rain.

David Craft, a spokesperson for the NWS, told ABC News that the infestation had been showing up on their radars since Memorial Day. The swarm is being blamed on Albuquerque's recent drought.

John R. Garlisch, extension agent at Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service, explained the extent to which the insects were invading, and it sounds absolutely horrifying.

"It is a nuisance to people because they fly into people's faces while walking, running, and biking. They are hopping into people's homes and garages, they splatter the windshield and car grill while driving, and they will eat people's plants."
Due to a mild winter, grasshopper eggs didn't die, which caused the large number to flood the city in the summer. Spokespeople for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, however, have put the power of extermination in the people's hands, determining it to be a homeowner and not a statewide concern.

Garlisch wisely noted, "Wait it out . . . As with everything this too shall pass."

That's a lot fo freaking grasshoppers! FL may have it's issues but at least I don't have to deal with insane swarms of bugs

Mega-sandstorm turns Tehran into apocalyptic landscape, kills four

ixdqxnbgxytjphpxwnw0.jpg

In a freakish and honestly terrifying turn of events, a giant cloud of sand enveloped Tehran today. The temperature plunged from over 90 F to the 60s in minutes. Winds whipped at 70 mile per hour. Trees fell. The power went out. Tehran looked like an apocalyptic horror show.

[YT]RVWNjwAJ3Kw[/YT]

Although this sandstorm was especially severe, Tehran is no stranger to dust. And sandstorms have been getting worse. Poor agricultural practices like overgrazing have made the countryside barren bowls of dust that feed into storms. Dust storms also blow across lakes that are dried up thanks to mistakes in water management. One hopes not, but perhaps this storm is a sign of things to come.

This one has killed at least four people and injured many more, had the city's residents reeling. "I've never seen anything like this. I was afraid it was an omen of things to come," one man told the AP. The sandstorm lasted for about 15 minutes before giving away to rain and strong winds.

The Cocaine King Who Inspired Blow Is Out Of Prison

yepfvn95q8pu370lop2j.jpg

George Jung, the notorious "cocaine cowboy" portrayed by Johnny Depp in Blow, has been released from prison after serving 20 years.

Jung, now 71, got into the coke game in the mid-'70s after being arrested for dealing marijuana and linking up in prison with Pablo Escobar's Medellín cartel. Eventually, he began working directly with Escobar to supply a rumored 89 percent of America's cocaine while the drug was still at the height of its popularity.

Arrested in 1987, Jung skipped bail until 1994, when he was arrested in Kansas with more than 1,700 pounds of cocaine. Sentenced to 60 years, he was able to secure early release by agreeing to testify against the former cellmate who first connected him to Escobar.

According to TMZ, Jung is being released to a halfway house somewhere on the west coast.

Passengers Trapped in Smoke-Filled Subway Train for 20 Minutes

iy7telbrsodzqqut9cmp.jpg

Like a nightmare come to life, passengers were trapped inside a smoke-filled, Queens-bound 7 train stuck in a tunnel near Grand Central for 20 minutes late last night.

From NBC New York:

The MTA says a conductor in 7 train bound for Queens heard a pop just before it went into a tunnel at around 11 p.m. Afterward, smoke began spreading through the train and the power was shut off. The train sat near the tunnel for about 20 minutes before before it reversed course and went back to Grand Central, where passengers were able to disembark.
According to the MTA, while the power was cut, the subway cars' fans immediately started pumping in fresh air. Service on the 7 line between between Times Square and Hunters Point Avenue was suspended for about 90 minutes last night until the fire department cleared the scene. Neither the MTA or police have explained what exactly happened. No injuries were reported.

Well that must have sucked

I posted about that in the Creepypasta thread, DJ did in the Stupid People thread and now it's here. I think it might deserve a thread on its own.

There's A Restaurant in D.C. Serving Bugs Today If You're Into That

pbdzum8hcytnmvlwbwda.jpg

As part of a PR stunt for Ehrlich Pest Control, 13 restaurants, including one in D.C., will become "pestaurants" and serve you dead bugs to eat. The goal, Ehrlich claims, is "to promote the health benefits of an insect rich diet already enjoyed by billions across the globe."

If you live in our nation's capital and would like to dine on some of the creatures you prefer to smash with your shoe, please mosey on over to the Occidental Grill on Pennsylvania Avenue between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a delectable lunch:

At this unique, fun event, Ehrlich will be serving an array of exotic cuisine that includes a range of edible insects such as grasshopper burgers, crispy BBQ mealworms and scorpion lollipops.

But also:

In addition to sampling the edible insects, visitors can take pest selfies, compete in a cricket eating contest and vote for DC's worst pest. The event is free and a number of professionally trained Ehrlich experts will be on hand to discuss the edible pests being served, answer any pest questions from members of the public and to pass on their 'top tips' for avoiding pest problems.

If you are not in the D.C. area and would like to eat some bugs, there are a number of "pestaurant" locations across the globe.

This could be a useful and informative event to attend if you aspire to a well-balanced diet that does not discriminate against our creeping and crawling friends of the animal kingdom. Many countries outside of the U.S. eat bugs regularly and enjoy them. Also: they're good for you!

The consumption of insects has been known to contribute positively to the environment and to health and livelihoods. More than 1,900 species have reportedly been used as food. Insects are high in protein, B vitamins and minerals like iron and zinc, and are low in fat. 100g of grasshopper can carry 20.6g of protein, 35.3mg of calcium and 5mg of iron. Eating insects can help boost nutrition and reduce our carbon footprint.

Just last year, the U.N. urged us all to start eating more bugs. National Geographic even rounded up "8 popular bugs to try." So instead of letting mosquitoes bite you, bite them.

Although, it seems odd that a company that specializes in pest control to be putting on such an event, if only because it would imply that Ehrlich Pest Control would have you eat the bugs that are infesting your home. Doesn't sound like a good business plan.

http://www.occidentaldc.com/occidental/index.cfm

I tried some bugs when I was overseas on deployment and they are pretty darn good. Anyone in DC please check it out and take pics and post them!

I haven't had bugs but I'd try them. I had frogs legs when I was a kid at some restaurant in Quebec. They were good.

We need these

To be caught and sent to DC for lunch. It's a perfect solution.

This Secret Movie Screening Will Actually Send You Back to the Future

ypjxrujuaffl9byreum9.jpg

Did you ever dream of visiting the small town in Back to the Future? Well, now might be your chance. This summer, a group called Secret Cinema is building a full-scale version of Hill Valley in a secret London location. And rumor has it that you'll be able to immerse yourself in not only the 1955 and 1985 version — but there will be a secret portal to the 2015 version as well.

ythy98ipmy4ozqiothmg.jpg

Secret Cinema is a British company that creates immersive and interactive environments where people can watch modern classics. In 2009, they built a faux Coney Island for a screening of the 1979 movie The Warriors. And in 2010 they had a screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in a former hospital. They even did Blade Runner a few years ago, converting a London warehouse into dystopian Los Angeles in 2019.

For this summer's Back to the Future event, DeLorean time machines will whisk participants between the two worlds of 1955 and 1985. There will even be a 1955-style "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance after each screening, complete with a surprise headline band every night. The location of the main event is even a secret at the moment.

"We shall play heavily on the innocent dream-like world of 1955 and the nostalgic pre-mobile phone world of 1985," organizer Fabien Riggal told the London Evening Standard. "We want the audiences to forget their current world and take an adventure."

The 2015 version of Hill Valley sounds like it won't be a major component to the experience, but rumor has it that finding the right alleyway will give you a peek into that far-off, futuristic world.

Sadly for some of us (read: me), Secret Cinema is based in London, and that's precisely where this version of Hill Valley, California will be built. So those of us here in places like the real California will have to settle for living vicariously through our British friends — and the inevitable photos and videos that find their way out into the world.

Starting today you can buy tickets for the event. But they won't be cheap. The screenings will run from July 24 until August 10 and set you back £53.50 ($90) for a single adult ticket, £25 ($42) for kids or £140 ($235) for a family pass which gets 2 adults and 2 children into the event.

No mention yet if there will be a take on Biff's seedy, low-rent-Vegas version of the town in 1989. Nor whether there will be any trips to the Wild West, like in the third version of the film that most of us pretend never happened. But judging by the incredibly immersive nature of past events, expect anything.

Man I would love to be able to go to that, loved those movies when I was growing up

Boiling Coca-Cola turns the soda into this gross black goopy tar

dwlhwmd9zwlyekjfw3oy.gif

The delicious diabetes drink commonly known as soda is a true scientific wonder. We know it's crap but we love it anyway. CrazyRussianHacker wanted to show just how much crap (and sugar) is in one bottle of Coke so he boiled out all the water in the soda to see what was leftover. The refreshing soda becomes this gross, black, gunky tar-like substance that doesn't look edible. Cool.

[YT]LZp29Qeu8_U[/YT]

Man that looks nasty but I still love drinking soda anyway

If they dropped the smugness it might actually prove interesting. Or not. It doesn't take much to make something genuinely good for you look nasty when you do something like that to it. Coke is just an easy target.

Boy Sentenced to Jail Because of Large Penis

A Russian court ruled that a Ukrainian boy who claims he’s 13 be tried as an adult based on the size of his penis, according to The Moscow Times. Tomas, whose last name was not released to protect his identity, was arrested on suspicion of stealing a cellphone in March—an accusation he denies.

The teen had moved to Moscow that same month to live with his aunt. His family claims he was 12 at the time of the arrest and has produced Ukrainian documentation that he used to cross the Russian border as proof. But authorities think he is older and ordered a medical examination to determine his real age. Based on the size of his penis and teeth, prison doctors told the court they believe he is actually 16 or 17.

It’s an important distinction. Individuals 16 and over can be tried as adults in Russia, and that age comes down to 14 in the case of more serious crimes like rape and murder. As a result, Tomas has since been sentenced as an adult and was sent to jail. His family has challenged the ruling, and the regional prison service has agreed to review his case.

Rare Heat Burst Causes Temps to Soar to 95° at Night in Kansas Town

nlk5o1aijppimawidl6v.png

A rare event known as a "heat burst" caused temperatures in Russell, Kansas last night to soar from 85° to 93° in less than an hour. To the east, Salina hit 95° at 1:00 AM. These phenomena usually occur in unpopulated areas, so not many people have heard of them. So, what is a heat burst, anyway?

A heat burst occurs in the dying stages of a thunderstorm as the storm's updraft — the wind blowing up into the storm to feed it moisture and instability — weakens and the storm begins to collapse.

Sometimes, if there is a dry pocket in the middle of the thunderstorm, precipitation will fall into the dry air and quickly evaporate, which makes this dry air cooler than the air around it. Since cool air is more dense than warm air, it starts to sink towards the ground.

orrfinlhakpzowhwdqcr.jpg

This descending pocket of air speeds up as it enters what is essentially free fall. The pocket of air heats up through compression heating — the pocket is falling into higher atmospheric pressure, so it starts to compress and rapidly warm up — the faster it falls towards the surface.

Eventually, this pocket of hot air hits the ground and spreads out in all directions, creating extremely strong winds and a rapid spike in temperatures that lasts for several hours before returning to where they were before the heat burst.

wrzwcjc4a8a2s6aodfyi.png

Last night's heat burst occurred just after 10:00 PM CDT, with the temperature going from 84° at 9:53 PM to 92° at 10:35 PM. As wind gusts exceeded 50 MPH, the temperature continued to climb to a high of 93° at 11:21 PM before starting to fall off. The heat burst actually set the daytime high temperature for June 3 in Russell, which would have been 92° if the event hadn't occurred.

Today's high in Salina, Kansas is only forecast to reach 90°, but its official high will sit at 95° thanks to the heat burst that hit at 1:00 AM.

Several prominent heat burst events have occurred in the past couple of years, including one in Wichita that sent temperatures soaring to 103° just before 1:00 AM on a stormy July night in 2011. Wikipedia has a list of a couple of extreme heat burst events that reportedly caused temperatures to soar to unimaginable levels, including one in Texas in 1960 that drove temperatures up to near 140°.

That is stupid hot, and I thought the weather in FL was crazy
