Other than AXM, I can't remember the last time I got really jazzed up about an X-Men comics storyline. I pretty much gave it up between Onslaught and Cassandra Nova, and I'm starting to see how much I've missed.

But I don't just want to read up on the key storylines that give important information. What are the quality storylines from the past decade that really showed what the X-Men are all about?

I loved the Twelve storyline in 99, but I'm in the minority there seeing as most people did not like it much. I loved the Psi-War of 98, the crossover that wasn't a crossover... In 2000 I enjoyed an issue here and there (like X-Men 100, 103 and Uncanny 383), in 2001 I almost threw up with Morrison's X-Men :p From Austen's Uncanny run I loved certain "moments" in his stories, but not the stories themselves. Since then, in 2004 I really enjoyed most of the Claremont's Uncanny run and of course Astonishing.

I'd have to go with Morrison's 'E is For Extinction/Imperial' and 'Planet X/Here Comes Tomorrow'.

Not exactly "what the X-Men are all about", but they easily are amongst the ballsier and most clever x-stories of the past ten years.

But considering how you gave up during the original Nova arc, I suppose it's safe to bet you won't like it a whole lot. :woot:
