I'm not really very knowledgeable of the Fantastic Four. I know the very basics. I myself never had a huge problem with the Story films, but I know there was quite a bit of dislike from fans of the Fantastic Four, and I know the new film has had a similar backlash...

So, I would like to know from ya'll, the experts, what did the other movies get right that this one didn't?

Yikes. Harsh words. I expected something like at least they mentioned Latveria or something. Did they mention Latveria in the new one?

In the original meeting with the "suits" where Franklin Storm is putting together his team. There's a sheet of paper that says:
Name: Victor Von Doom
Home: Latveria

The "suits" get mad saying that Victor should be in jail. They never say for what and it's never explored again.

Well they do say something about him burning all of Dr. Storm's drives.

That's something, I guess. It seems strange that they'd allow someone who should be in jail to work on a project like this.

Other than Reed and to a lesser extent Victor, the movie never establishes why any of the other characters should be there, especially Ben and Johnny.

The story films at least have the economy to establish in the first 5 minutes, why all the characters are involved. Reed wants a mission to fund the cloud, Ben is a NASA pilot, so is Johnny, sue is the head of Von Doom's genetics research, victor is there to fund the mission.

Secondly there is real chemistry with the cast in the Story films. You can tell they like each other and generally had fun making the film.

In this film the cast is aloof and totally disinterested. All of the acting performances are horrible.

I don't think the cast was BAD. In fact most of them are talented actors ( Miles Teller and Micheal B Jordan for example) It was just a BAD script with bad direction. But anyway, the Story movies did have better chemistry among the FF and the movies had a sense of fun.

I haven't seen the new one yet, but I'd say that there is absolutely nothing redemptive in the Story films either. Just because the "dark, grim, grounded" execution in this film failed, doesn't mean the "light, cartoonish, silly" approach in the Story films worked. Both approaches are abominable. It can be that the Story films got everything wrong, and the Trank film gets everything wrong, it's not an either-or spectrum where the deficit of one is a plus for the other.

Without seeing the new movie, the costumes. The Story costumes were cool

You saw it?

A lighter, more humorous tone and the team feeling more like a family.

Here are just a few things that the Story film got right..
-The relationship between Johnny and Ben
-Chris Evans was a great Johnny Storm and the effects for his powers were good
-Michael Chiklis was a great Ben Grimm and had the perfect Thing voice
-The cast members were all of a good age for the Fantastic Four
- Stan Lee cameo
- Doom at least LOOKED like Dr. Doom. While his characterization was off, he looked enough like comic book Doom.
- The movie is fun, and has a good family element. The cast has chemistry with one another.
-The suits looked pretty great

Right, but between the two it appears that most would opt for the Story film's approach.

The director got to tell the story he wanted.

-It looks more expensive like the sets
-Better looking costume
-Better Human Torch
-More charisma and fun
-More outdoor scenes
-Longer length

I'm not FF comics fan, but what I think Story got right was the character dynamic. His FF felt more like a family. Plus I think they were generally more fun and engaging characters. We got to see them do more heroing than at the last like fifteen or so minutes of the film, like in the reboot.

I really felt buoyed by the first FF film (Story). I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was a fun, comic book movie. I was slower to come around to FF 2, but still I thought it was an enjoyable enough film.

Besides what others have already said, the Thing at least had pants in the story films.

I'm in the same boat, I liked both Story and Frank's versions that both have their good and bad points of which are already mentioned.

It all comes down to the source material, lets face it there's only so many ways you can tell a good FF story when they've always been a bottom seller in comic sales.

The Story films, as messy as they were, were easily a step above this movie. I wouldn't know where to begin listing all the things it got kind of right that this movie screwed up.

The story films were actually fun entertaining and lighthearted family oriented. And Chiklis and Evans saves much of those films.

Story understood the material and how the characters work. Evans and Chiklis played the characters to a tee and had great onscreen chemistry.

Ok the first one was ok. Alba and McMahon were terribly miscast.

But the second one was horrible. Reed dancing (there should be a ban on Marvel characters dancing), Johnny becomes a super skull, and the Galactus fart cloud are inexcusable.
