What do you dislike about modern comics?

It may have been misconstrued into that meaning it certainly is not the case in the comics, or at least it wasn't anyway.....but seriously? I thought mutants were people born with powers. So, the joke is on me then, Wolverine is gay. I guess Scott Summers and Jean Grey too?
You know what subtext is right?

Yeah.....

This, a thousand times this. Most superhero artist bore me to no end. They seem more concern with drawing cool, badass posses. That's why I loved about picking the Bat books in the past few years- the diversity of artists on the books and who know the difference between panel and pin-up. Quitely, Jock, Irving, Stewart, Williams, Burnham, Francavilla absolutely dominated over everybody working in superhero books.
Yeah, the Batman books of late did a great job distinguishing themselves from the norm, and from one another (which is important, since there are so many).

I really, REALLY hope you're reading Daredevil right now.
I am. And it's terrific.

Wow, that is serious homophobia right there.

You can't see a Gay character fighting alongside...are f**king serious?

This has to be a bit.

Seriously, I can see gay characters in comics, if you go back and read my earlier posts. It's just not an element I want expanded on in Marvel and DC comics. Same thing goes for straight characters...I'm not a fan of dripping sexuality in my Marvel/DC comics which is now seen in every comic and on every cover. I don't get off on that...tho I can appreciate a sexy character! But that seems to be just about every woman character...but just not cute as it once was.

Romance is great! Ben and Alicia, She-hulk and Wyatt Wigfoot. I'm not a prude about sex...in fact quite the opposite. The characters are just not about that....Go read the Wolverine ls, or JRJR/byrne/cockrum/Claremont X-men and see how it's done. Implied is cool...you can fill in the blanks. Robin fighting new flamboyant openly gay hispanic character, Bunker, over city X with head positioned by Robins crotch...uh, no...Northstar shouting in mid-battle, "I am gay!"...um....no. It changes the tone waaay too much. Marvel and DC are now The Authority and it kinda really sucks.

Ok, but just because someone is gay, doesn't mean it has to be sexual. It adds to the character. Gives him/her some depth. If done right.

I saw a love triangle with Wolvie, Cyke, and Jean. I saw Colossus have a three way in the Savage Land. I saw Byrne have a mind controlled Superman do porn with Big Barda. Is that what you're talking about? Cuz that happened. With those creators. During that time period. Just done straight.

So what you're saying is that is okay, but a character, like Batwoman, who happens to be gay, is too much?

I'm sorry mister Custer, but you don't know wtf you're talking about.

Fine, then let's get back on topic: I dislike the lack of smaller panels and classic sequential art in many books.

Also...most books today are not very reader friendly...I dislike that.

Well, I don't much care about who's gay, but I do have other issues. I can't stand.......

- when cover art has nothing to do with the story in the book.
- when female superheroes walk around in overly revealing costumes (some readers might like this, but I think that a superhero should have a little class).
- when the same superhero is played by several people over time. We are now on the third Batgirl within my lifetime. Why?
- the damn price tag of these books.
- too many superheroes talking about their feelings. I don't want to hear superheroes talk about feelings. I want them to talk about who's ass they're going to kick.

If it makes you feel any better, Barbara's Batgirl again. Despite the fact that she's outgrown the mantel

I'm still pissed Cassie Cain isn't Batgirl myself.

Yeah, I know that Barbara is back, and I think it's great. But what do you mean she's outgrown the mantle?

Yeah... fairly certain that's never happened, dude. You seem to be assuming that a gay couple in a comic can't have a subtle romance, the way that straight couples can. I, personally, think that's completely false. Wiccan and Hulking have been a couple since they were created. I don't think we've ever seen them kiss, we've never seen them have sex, we've never seen them oogle Cap's crotch... they're just two characters who happen to be together.

I'm not gonna sit and pester you about this, because I don't think I'll be changing your mind anytime soon, but there are lots of examples that disprove your point.

Way to miss the point. The struggle the X-Men goes through has always been a reflection of those of real world minorities. In the movies, and very clearly in the third one, they allude this struggle to homosexuality. That doesn't mean the characters are suddenly gay.

EDIT: Wow, totally missed the new page. Whatever, I'll just leave it here.

To a point you're right. It reflects the interpretation of the reader. this not not include all minorities, however. Like say, club-footed pedophile zookeepers. Don't tell me about X-men, I had a 175 book collection of them around the time you were watching your brother hook up the Nintendo.

Actually these here postwars have helped to sway my mind.

Perhaps I should learn to see such characters as simply good people that are fighting the good fight, protecting their respective universes, worlds against cosmic threats, crime, evil, corruption, etc. I have certainly accepted gay people as friends/acquaintances/comrades in my daily life. I work with gay people and we get on great!...and get the job done.

So, if Wolverine and Ghost Rider are OK with guys kissing on guys/and two women having sex than it's good enough for my Rick Jones no-powers ass. So, I'll check out Bat-woman when I hit the store next week (been a long time since I picked up anything) ...And I'll check out that Teen Titans thing with that Bunker character. Who knows, I may actually like the books....

Still tho, it's strange to imagine that a guy who fights alonside Wolverine, Batman or the Fantastic Four is gonna head home afterwards and plant one on (in?!) a dude! But, I will really try and look past that and look at the characters actions as a hero....maybe I'll enjoy the characters a lot more than I now realize. Just like real life. In the future I'll save the contempt for those people who really deserve it....the chinese.

Well, for one thing she's too old to still be going by "girl".

She spent all that time as Oracle. She did far more under that name than she did as a sidekick. Running Birds of Prey. Becoming the data hub for the JLA and all it's affiliates. Toppled corrupt governments. Took on and put down scum from all over the world not just the occasional loon that Batman's too busy to deal with. Helped keep people alive in a post apocalyptic Gotham, and eventually helped bring the city back from disaster. All from a wheelchair in a clock tower.

Now she's back to running around Gotham in a cowl and a cape. It's a step down. She should be leading the BOP from the front lines. Now she doesn't even have anything to do with em.

What i don't like in modern comics, huhm, Harley Quinn's new costume

Yeah yeah, the message of the book still seems to have gone over your head.

And about the movies, it hammers it in so unsubtly in the third one that I just don't see how it's open to interpretation if the minority struggle is supposed to mirror homosexuality or not. (At least in the Last Stand.) I didn't say anything about how this is done in the comics.

Do people age in the comics? Aside from that, she was too old to be a "girl" the first time around. Some writers just call everything a girl, regardless of age.

Yeah, she did some great work as Oracle. Running around Gotham City does seem like a step down. But hell, at least she's RUNNING around Gotham again, and not stuck in a wheelchair. I always felt bad for her, being paralyzed like that. I'm happy she's out of the chair. Hopefully the writers won't forget that this is a character that's supposed to have some brains.

I pretty much agree with everything everyone's already said here (except for the anti-gay stuff, naturally). Conversely, though, I prefer the uniformity in artwork. I like my realistic comics looking real, and my fantastical comics looking fantastical. I hate guys like Ramos, Bachalo and Young on mainstream hero books because they just don't fit.

The one thing the 90s comics had for the most part was a balance between the writing and art. You felt like you got your money's worth, but at the same time you didn't feel like you were bogged down reading War & Peace every issue.

Ramos's art is ****ing awesome and fits characters like Spider-Man to a T.

When they're allowed to. Like Nightwing. And Babs as well.

She should have stayed Oracle, and got her ability to walk back. Woulda been awesome to have seen her out in the field with Canary and Huntress being the badass, big brain, ass kicker she always should have been. Instead now she spent a few months to a year paralyzed, and most of the stuff she did is gone from the timeline. It's boos**t.

I thought Oracle was perfect as is. She was much more compelling than she ever was as Batgirl.
