What do you look for in a novel or story??

I'm a little new to starting threads but just wanted to know what other people look for when searching for books. What catches your eye? Im asking this because I'm in the process of writing my own novel and it would help greatly to find key things that readers like.

Good idea, I've been working on something as well. But as for what I look for in a story is a couple of things actually.
1) A theme thats larger than life, like death lol or faith.
2) Well developed characters that I can relate to with the normal boring things that go on in my life.
