Just to elaborate why I chose 616 Spidey

To be honest, I've found Bendis' run on USM to be BORING outside of the humor department. It has none of the passion, fun and adventure that Stan's run has.

In fact I don't enjoy any of Bendis' super hero books outside of Daredevil (which, I'll admit was superb).

Anyway as to who is a better character? 616 definitely. He's more intelligent, clever, resolute, likeable, etc., its not even a contest.

You know, this is a good, yet, kinda unfair question

In terms of charachter development, true heroism, and overall greatness, it's 616 Spidey hands down.

And while 616 Spidey's 1st 100 issues piss all over Ultimate, let's go and compare the last 100 issues of ASM over USM.

I think we all know which book much more consitency and overall storytelling maturity.

I know that USM is more aimed at the broody teenager Buffy market, where as 616 Spidey is more aimed at adults, but which one is doing a better job?

While attempting to be more, 'mature,' 616 Spidey has soap-opera-style out-of-nowhere infedilty, and eye gouging. Both seem stupid to adults, and ends up appealing to wanna-be-cool kids who think mature stories need gratuitous sex and violence.

Ultimate is aimed at teens, and does a well enough job that adults can relate to what they went through as a teen, and end up enjoying the book.

To me, 616 will always be the cooler, really Spidey, but as I've said MANY times, 616 Spidey stories to for a VERY long time, just haven't felt like Spidey stories at all. At least Bendis knows who Ultimate Peter is, and knows how to write him, unlike most people tackling 616 Spidey.

Everything Stan wrote in ASM is considered classic. Well written, rich with wit,humour,drama,and action.

You disliked his six arm Spidey story right?? It lasted like what, two issues or so?? Can you say why you disliked it, and yet why you defend stuff like his new costume, the stingers and totem stuff etc??

Btw, just out of curiosity, what's with the constant "haha"?? Is it a nervous laugh or something??

I disliked it because I dislike it. I'm not going to run down every tiny little detail and pick it apart. It was like a giant jump the shark moment in Stan Lee's Spider-Man writing career. He contributed to a lot of great Spider-Man stories over the years and gave these characters lives of their own pretty much...and then....six arms. Heh. It was the jump the shark moment in the Stan Lee run.

And just because I feel differently about certain things than the majority of posters around here don't think I enjoy EVERYTHING. I never said I liked the stingers. And I said I really loved the totem plot line until The Other, which was the "jump the shark" of the totem storyline. It should have just been put to rest at the end of the Book of Ezekiel, a fitting ending in my opinion.

And I like the new costume for a few reasons. One, in all the years of being Spider-Man he never thought to upgrade his costume AT ALL?! I know I would have enjoyed to have some type of extra protection...his spider sense doesn't make him unkillable. I enjoy that Stark gave it to him as his teammate on the Avengers. Tony may have other motives, but that's what is supposed to make it a story. I like the new capabilities that it provides Spider-Man with and we get to see him work with new gadgets, much like Ben Reilly with the Spider stingers and impact webbing. I wish they would show more of how Peter is utilizing the new suit. In the latest issue of Sensational he was really using that thing a lot and it really made me enjoy the suit even more. Do I really care that much that it's red and yellow? No. Because it's a story. They're making the reader dislike Tony Stark for the future of the Civil War storyline.

For me it comes down to a single thing. Do you like long indepth stories that span over 4-6 issues, or do you like self contained "episodical" stories.

The first 100 issues of ASM mainly consisted of one story per issue and so we got around 100 different stories, while USM has had only about 15 different "major" stories in its 100 isssue. Now what that means is that for the most part USM has had in my opinion more characterisation than ASM. Lets take Uncle Ben for example, in the first 100 issue of ASM we saw next to nothing about him, while in USM we see quite a lot of him in the first 4 issues giving the readers the chance to know the person and get attached to him before they kill him. Also the character of Aunt May was pretty much one dimentional in ASM while in USM she is actually written like a real person rather than the old "Grandmother" figure she was in ASM.

However for me the big thing was how they made some of the villans in 616 that I really hate, better in USM (the main ones being Venom/Carnage). I see USM as a re-telling of ASM with the hindsight of knowing what was wrong/hated about some of the stories/characters in ASM.

Both characters represent the same thing in essence. They are both young men, who were ill-fated to become bitten by a radioactive spider, that would grant them amazing powers. At the end of the day, the moral of the story remains the same. With great power, comes great responsibility. With that, we all love one thing....to see Peter Parker take on that mantra, and apply it every single issue, with every antic he engages in, in the ol' red, white and blues. There is no doubt in my mind that Ultimate Spider-Man has been better written as of late, than 616 Spider-Man...but there are factors to that. 616 Spider-Man is bolstered to a long and often convoluted legacy that can some times deny certain actions. In other cases, some actions (Sins Past) are forced to go directly against established history. Writing 616 Spider-Man is a far more difficult task than the comparabily infantile Ultimate Spider-Man, which so far, doesn't even have much of a universe. It consists of the Ultimates, The Fantasic Four, the X-Men and Spider-Man. Yes other marvel heroes and villains have appeared (such as The Punisher, Galactus, Daredevil etc) but they are often treated as guest stars of sorts. There is so much less to worry about when writing the Ultimate books. Ultimate Peter Parker has left New York only once, where as 616 Peter Parker has been to the darkside of the moon and then some. Each book has its strong points and definite short comings (there is no way you can honestly say you liked the cheap shot death of Gwen, or the Wolverine/Spidey body swap, that was so bad, that even Bendis made fun of it). With the Ultiamte line, you get a Spider-Man that is free of his own blessed and cursed legacy. However, with the 616 books you get four plus decades of history, turmoil, joys and successes. For all of the acrimony, we have all shared in the pleasure of seeing Venom be the continual worst foe that Spider-Man has. We all waited to see how Aunt May reacted to knowing who Peter's alter ego really is. And there is not much to dislike, about seeing Peter grab snap shots of himself in action, just to pick up some ends to pay for his college life. 616 Spidey has been there and done that, when it comes to comparing him to Ultimate Spider-Man, but there is no harm in Ultimate Spidey taking us on a new perspective for an old nostalgia trip.
