What if the ALIEN franchise had gone differently?

Alien 3 supporter signing in. :)

I'll be the first to admit that it is nowhere near a perfect movie, but it absolutely doesn't deserve the hate it gets. I can only come up with one reason why people tend to have such vitriol for Alien 3; As the OP points out, it simply wasn't the movie that people wanted. They wanted Aliens to infest Earth. They wanted the Marines, lead by Hicks, to kick their bug asses off our planet. They wanted heroics. They wanted a happy ending for Ripley and Newt. But they didn't get what they wanted, so they chose to hate it.

That's pretty much the reasons why. That and they use the excuse that it had production problems and wasting away of the budget for why it "sucked". I find that to be a contradiction, for all it's problems Fincher still gave us a solid film. I remember my first time watching it on VHS, even I was bummed and let down they killed off Newt, Hicks and Bishop. On second viewing I came to really enjoy the film.

Well, knowing all this, if I do ever watch it, I'll go in open minded.

I was reading one of the script online.

They also don't get that killing off Hicks, Newt, and eventually everyone else around her was the whole reason for the film. For her to make a sacrifice when even all of the people she cared for or began to care for was killed. When there was nothing left to live for she chose to continue to stand up for the only thing she knew was right.

But how is an invested Earth a happy ending for the characters. If anything I think that would have been a much more haunting and nightmarish ending for our characters. The only home these characters will have is now a alien run scum hole. It would have created a epic third movie. There is no denying it. Fox just did not have the scope. They always screw up third parts in franchises.

Actually I read somewhere that James Cameron wanted to do a sequel with Ripley after Alien Resurrection...and we find out parts 3 and 4 were all a part of Ripley's hyper sleep nightmare.

But this series was never a action series...or an epic series. It's a horror series.

It was an action horror series...that turned into a s**tty series.

Res was a mix. But Alien, and Alien 3 were more horror then action. Aliens was action.

It annoys me how much people need to see big epic set peices with lotsa gun fire for this series. I'd take Aliens, in a confined space, no weapons to kill it. Adds suspense.

Alien 3 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the 2nd one.

Whocares if Alien 3 was more of a horror movie than the 2nd? it still wasn't as good.

Yes it was. It went in the right direction. Aliens is great, but I hate how simple it made the Alien. I hope the Alien goes back to raping people again.

And I will everytime, mention Alien 3 in the same breath as Aliens. Because I find them very good.

Same here, I like the 3rd Movie just as much as the 2nd movie. Sure, it suckes that Hicks and the girl died, but I think it's a good idea that the Alien franchise doesn't have happy endings.

I'm glad we didnt get Aliens 2. Aliens rules, no doubt. My favorite film, along with Alien....but still...

I didn't like that Hicks and the kid died off screen but that wasn't Alien 3's biggest problem.

And I'm not going to get into it's problems right now because I don't feel like writing them up.

Alien: 7.5/10

Aliens: 9/10

Alien 3: 6/10

Alien R: 4.5/10 (from memory, I haven't watched it in about a minute)

I didn't hate Alien 3 but it was too big of a mess to contend with the first two.

If anything, Alien Resurrection killed the franchise. I really like Alien 3 -- a whole lot more than Aliens.. bleargh, Aliens, bleargh. Screw you Cameron, with your kids, your Bill Paxton and your freaking Paul Reiser. Paul Reiser!

Alien 3. I can look past it being not as good as the first two (3rd films usually suck..except for Friday the 13th part 3 and NOES 3..those were good). What I didn't like about the film was the plot. I didn't like the all male prision planet thing. I really didn't care about those characters and I really wanted to see all of them die except Ripley. Was that the point of the film? Another thing was the alien designs. I understood that the aliens biological set up conform to it's host, but a dog? Really?

Another thing I didn't like, is Riply going the entire movie with an alien inside her, but yet it takes days and days and days up until the end for her to finally realize this. Why did it take so long? A few hours after being awakened (or at best, Ripley would have died still in sleep mode) and that alien would have popped out of her. Just didnt' make sense to me. Anyone care to explain why this is?

Another thing I didn't like was the color of the film. It was orangish and that just made my eyes hurt.

But all that aside, the film serves a purpose of being 'filler' to me. It sets up Reserrection to be about 'The Company' and it's interest in the alien beings.

The minority is wrong in this instance.

Alien 3 doesn't hold a candle to Aliens.

The internet is the ultimate place for revisionist history.

The only thing Alien 3 holds (and this is in my opinon) is a sign that reads "This movie isn't as good as Aliens and if you want an inferrer dull film...watch me"

I too don't understand the hate Alien 3 gets.

Visually, it was very accurate to Giger's whole style.

And sure Hicks and Newt got killed. But that makes it more powerful. Ripley has finally found some happiness by the end of Aliens. Then the Alien menace strips it all away...again. I like that. Not all films have to have happy endings.

And going from an elite team of hi tech soldiers to a prison planet occupied by a load of bickering cockneys with no weapons at all is nice reversal. Takes it back to that sense of helplessness and impending doom of the first Alien. And you're not supposed to care for any of the inmates, apart from Dillon and the doctor Ripley falls for. The rest of them are just fodder. But that's not the point. This Ripley's story, of a woman who has lost EVERYTHING AGAIN but still carries on fighting, still has her morals and wants to make sure the Alien never survives, no matter what.

Remember, she could of saved herself if she let the Company freeze her, but she couldn't let this happen, so sacrificed herself.

Because it's a Queen Alien inside her, it makes sense that they take longer to gestate or whatever.

Alien is the best film of the series (in my opinion). It is the ultimate Science Fiction Horror film and gets the characters, atmosphere, environment and the creature itself perfect. Aliens is a brilliant sequel and my second best movie of the franchise. I don't like how the creatures basically became a hive of insects (I prefer the evil killer space rapist from the first film), however the marine characters are so fun and the action is great. It's very different to the first film, but it was supposed to be.
Alien 3 is, in my opinion, a bad film. It tries hard to capture what Alien was, yet fails. The atmosphere of the prison is nothing compared to that of the Nostromo, the characters of the prison are unmemorable and they should have kept to using the same effects for the creature as in the previous films. The Alien looked alot better in the first 2.
I won't even bother discussing the terrible Alien Resurrection or Alien VS Predator films.
