I'm pretty sure he's a journalist even while in Alaska, in the flashbacks.

The original script had him in Africa during his freelance journalist days during a political coup where violence broke out.

The original script was ripped apart waaaay long ago (and this is the one you speak of, the Africa Script), dead and gone after Snyder arrived, what you are speaking of is Goyer's script from the origins of his brain.

Africa... http://screenrant.com/superman-man-of-steel-script-secret-origin-schrad-93433/

Not sure why you would go off a script so early on in nature to prove your point now??? Simply irrational to do so if you have any knowledge of the history of the writers involved in the MOS script.

We don't actually know. All we know is that it is Clark in Metropolis, we don't know when it takes place, it is possible that scene is before he has met Perry and possibly a couple years before he made his debut as Superman. Because, clearly, there's no disguise.

He "Will Not" become a Journalist until the end of the film, and I can guarantee that! Mark my words, and don't ask me how I know, I just do.

:)

This thread is not the thing that's pointless. You're posts are

Can someone please remind me to quote Ether's posts next year when we've all seen the film, and Clark is clearly doing freelance work before even becoming Superman.

I'd really enjoy having a good laugh about it. :)

I just came on here SOOO Happy to see that you quoted me, as I feel your one of my great friends, and then I read you RIPPED me a new one!!! LOL

EXACTLY what you said... Clark is doing freelance work before becoming Superman...EXACTLY!!!

He is NOT Superman yet, he is not a reporter yet, he does not know who he is in life! His dad passes in the tornado, he feels guilty that he could NOT save his dad, so out of guilt he travals from Job to Job, not able to make anything of himself because others think he is a FREAK!

This is as far as I'm am going with what I know, feel free to quote me a year from now PLEASE!!!! I come on SHH! almost daily, so I will be here, and if I'm wrong.... Well, I won't be, thats for you to make my "Fake" punishment for me :cwink: hehe

So whats my Punishment if I'm wrong?

This is him at the END of the Film finally becoming "Clark Kent the Reporter" finding the Daily Planet in Metropolis. PLEEEASE QUOTE me on it a year from now :)

BTW... I'm done saying what I know, I will discuss, but no more leaks on my part :)

I think people need to stop being apologetic about Superman. Yes he wears trunks over his costume..... he is Superman. Yes he wears glasses to conceal his identity.... he is Superman. Yes.. he flys... HE IS FREAKIN SUPERMAN.

Why are we accommodating the general public who aren't familiar with the Superman mytho. It's like if the filmmakers are saying,"hey sorry general public that Superman is looking this way and sometimes doesn't make sense.. we will change it for you guys and all the Superman fans out there will just have to accept because...well.... they have no choice."

I'm confused... Do you for some reason think that freelance reporting doesn't count or something?

No one thinks he'll be working at the DP until much later in the film if at all. But most of us believe, because the official synopsis says so, and because it just kind of makes sense for the character, that he will be a freelance journalist while 'finding himself'.

The only reason anyone is questioning what YOU are saying, is because you're claiming he is not a reporter AT ALL until the end of the film.

Which you seem now to have gone back on...

Which is why i'm now confused

Everything else you've said is pretty obvious if you've been keeping up with all the info (though you might wanna spoiler tag parts of it for people who don't wanna know [BLACKOUT]about JK's death[/BLACKOUT].

P.S. You're punishment is just me pointing and going 'Ha!' :p

That would've been nice.

Freelance reporter = Reporter

He went to college. He's got his career. He is a reporter.

Because they want this film to be profitable. It isn't a film made for fans and they aren't trying to make a traditional 'comicbook' movie.

Avengers is the fastest grossing movie in history. Very "comic-booky" as are the partnering franchises, perhaps the general audience disagrees with you.

I think the audience would be more turned off if he started wearing a wig and a fake beard.

It depends on what they're trying to do. If they want to ground everything in realism (and they probably do), a fake wig and beard would make sense, and the audience will go along with it. If, on the other hand, they want it to be as comic book-y as The Avengers, it might seem out of place.

They aren't going to put a fake wig and beard on him... I actually can't see how they'd do that without it coming off comical.

I mean, I can just see it now. Instead of a shirt rip, Supes majestically rips off his stick on beard and wig :funny:

The thing is, if we're talking pure realism, the only logical way of truly concealing his identity would be to wear a mask over his face when he's in costume.

But if you don't understand WHY he doesn't do that, and why it's so important to the character and the story to not cover his face as the hero (which is why he has to have a much more complicated disguise than just an actual physical disguise because, well, journalists don't wear actual masks over their face) then you've really missed something.

I don't expect this to be as "comic-book-y" as Avengers, not by a long shot. But having Superman walk around in a fake beard and wig is just stupid, far more than if it were just a pair of specs. When Zod attacks, Clark's going to run out of the Daily Planet, or wherever, make good use of these:

and then change into his Superman suit. Very "Superman", don't you think?

What's comical about wanting to conceal his identity?

Or he'd just rush off at super speed and the next time we see him, he's in costume.

But we aren't talking pure realism, because if we were, Superman wouldn't have his powers.

Well that's all well and good, and I don't disagree with you, but the symbolism of Superman not wearing a disguise doesn't have much to do with anything.

Not really. Objectively speaking, it'd make a lot more sense.

I mean...really. You're not seriously suggesting that a pair of glasses would conceal a person's identity more so than a combination of a wig, fake beard, and glasses would, are you?

As a fan, I could go either way. If they want to go the traditional route, great. There are lots of ways they could make it work. But if they want to add a little something, fine by me.

When Zod attacks, Clark's going to run out of the Daily Planet, or wherever, make good use of these...

Yeah, because it's hard for a guy who has super speed to remove a fake wig and beard in a hurry. :oldrazz:

and then change into his Superman suit. Very "Superman", don't you think?

Oh, no, I agree with you. I mean, what's "Superman" about Clark Kent removing his disguise and changing into his costume? Ludicrous! :cwink:

It's not that a wig and fake beard wouldn't better conceal his face. Though obviously their quality would determine how likely it is someone would go 'Are you wearing a wig and a fake beard?'

It's just that any attempt to make his actual physical disguise too 'big', IMO would be comical.

The best thing you can do, is underplay the 'ridiculous' nature of the disguise. Have it be something the audience KNOWS would never work in real life, but they accept that it is simply representing something within the story and doesn't need to have real life application.

And audiences are perfectly capable of doing that. They have been through every single Superman interpetation for decades. Even in Smallville, where he'd been walking around without glasses, even working at the Daily Planet without glasses for years!

Yep. Overplaying the disguise ruins it.

Otherwise, why not just give Superman a mask?

I don't know what other posters here think but I would laugh if Clark Kent uses a wig and a beard to disguise himself.

Rather than reinventing his disguise what if he continues to wears glasses but works at some place where he will not meet many people for example as a cook in a restaurant or as a truck driver. (and he can continue to work as a freelance reporter for a website, so that not many will see his face.) ;)

This solves the problem of how Clark never gets recognized by Perry, lois and other people who work at the Daily Planet office.

I stand by my belief that they will make Clark into Mrs Doubtfire!

The only problem with this theory is that it wouldn't allow for much interaction between Clark and Lois, and that's something I think everyone wants to see.

Then we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

How would that, in any way, underplay the ridiculousness of it? That would be doing the exact opposite of that.

I'm a little confused. So you don't, in any way, want them to attempt to make the disguise believable? Even if they just use the glasses?

Honestly, I wouldn't mind that approach. Why would I? It'd just have to make sense within the framework of the film. If MOS is more Avengers than BB/TDK, such an approach would make sense. But if they're going to ground everything they can in realism/plausibility (and I believe they are), that just won't work. That's JMO.

All that said: I have no doubt they're going the traditional route. They're just going to explain how and why it works. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Even in Smallville, where he'd been walking around without glasses, even working at the Daily Planet without glasses for years!

That's not a really good example, seeing as how it's Smallville and all. :woot:

I responded to this over at ES. :woot:

Then what are we actually disagreeing about?

I've said tonnes of times, that there are ideas they can explore as to why the simple glasses disguise works. And audiences can swallow them or not, but I don't doubt they would try to weave some kind of explanation for why the glasses work in there.

They can play with ideas of hiding in plain sight, being cloaked by people's own assumption that Superman is an alien who just showed up and doesn't have a human life, and that the idea of him dressing up as a human and working in an office is too ridiculous for anyone to even entertain the idea that CK might be Superman even though he does look like him. The fact that no one really gets that close a look at him anyway, other than Lois, and she is blinded by her own infatuation with a fantasy.

Then what are we actually disagreeing about?

It sounded like you were against any form of explanation of the effectiveness of the disguise, and that the audience should simply accept that it works without question, regardless of the tone of the film.

It's quite obvious now you weren't saying that at all, so I apologize for misunderstanding you. :yay:

Quite right.

Heres an idea on how Supermans secret identity could be handled.
I have a new idea on how the Clark/Superman disguise could work. The movie could write it such that Clark is a naturally skinny guy. However whenever he activate his Kryptonian powers,He transforms him into a bigger muscular version of himself-Superman.Due to the added muscle gained in the Transformation,Clarks facial muscles also Change. So Clarks face and Supermans face are quite different.
When in Clark mode hes completely human. He even wears glasses when in clark mode because he cant see properly. His Superman transformations are usually voluntarily but are involuntarily when his body is in danger.

You could also add that Supermans eyes are unnnaturally blue whilst Clarks eyes are normal.Further diffrentiates between the two.

Avengers is the fastest grossing movie in history. Very "comic-booky" as are the partnering franchises, perhaps the general audience disagrees with you.
.
The AVENGERS IS NOT COMICBOOKY. I cant stress this enough.Marvel studios have changed a lot of components in their films from comicbooks. From cotumes,to certain storylines. For example the Cosmic CUBE IN MCU is quite different from the comic version even though they look the same.a
