Depends, but for me, usually some kind of picture/visual.

Y'know, I'd say it really depends. There's some instances where no, you'd never be able to capture an image into written word like you could in a picture. The beauty, the brutality, the reality of it all itself can sometimes be really affecting in a way that a writing could never hope to be affective.

There are other instances were written word can call your attention to things so subtle and so fine, you never would have noticed them otherwise. Instances were written word can make something beautiful out of the mundane. Can make poetry out of a simple description of a place or person.

it depends on the situation, but in most instances imagery describe and present things in a manner that most people understand.

Agreed. :)

for me, a picture can bring back whole memories with one look.

Why does this thread give me a case of deja vu? Anyways, a picture says a thousands words, thus it's more productive and powerful.

im for both, i guess it depends.

sometimes something visual will sit with me for a long time, but words have also affected me the same way. sometimes words help you to create visual images in your head that are better than actual pictures.

case in point, The Da Vinci Code. When read, I think it's much more amazing than the movie was. I don't like everything spilled out and such, the stuff I was imagining was much more preferable to me than some of the junk on the screen.

I think the picture has more meaning to society in general. Not too say everyone is more motivated by picture, but I think the vast majority of people today are more visually stimulated. I don't think you could walk up to someone today and try to describe to them some horrible act and have them respond to you in the same way if you had shown them a picture or video of the event.

good point. i think images stay with us a lot longer than words do. we might forget the exact wording of something, but sometimes we can remember every little detail in something we've seen.

Definitely the written word...

Books>Film

and also powerwise, a signature on any official document can open a world to so much, peace, war the lives of billions of people.

Pictures are merely for entertainment and perhaps leading those along whose imaginations aren't as broad as others.

written word without a shadow of a doubt.

In theory, written word should be more powerful, but it all depends on the individual's perception. A photo will show something as it is.

Seeing as how the written word developed as merely a more subtle and nuanced way of drawing pictures, I'd say you'd have to go to pictures for a more immediate impact. Words can express much more than pictures, but pictures have the advantage of an instant, almost universal appeal.

The spoken word on the other hand can have an effect almost equalled to the visual effect of pictures, cause there's more room for delivery in spoken words than when they're written.

Always for me the written word. Images are all fine and good, but my mind can do so much better.

I didn't say what was imediate...

I asked what was the most lasting impact. Do you know how to read, riven.

Pictures get the meaning across faster because they are universal, but books and writing leave more of an impact because they convey a message more descriptively and draw your attention to tiny details you wouldn't otherwise have noticed.
