Maybe the best true crime film ever made, an epic drama to rival Once Upon a Time in America, and a precise portrait of an interesting time in Taiwan history post Chinese Civil War.

Beautiful to look at, brilliant storytelling achievement in a wonderland to rival Alice's and Dorothy Gale's.

p5081_p_v7_aa.jpg

Spiritual epic love triangle.

p6319_p_v7_aa.jpg

The best crime film ever made, and arguably the best drama period (after Yang's film). Perfect in nearly every way that a movie can be.

p29984_d_v7_aa.jpg

The best opening shot I've ever seen (including Touch of Evil) as the heroine looks back ten years to the end of her fleeting youth and a turning point in her life that she might not have survived. Not Hou's best film, but his most gorgeous, both in cinematography and in the grace he grants his wandering heroine until she finds her own way from an abusive boyfriend and smoky nightclubs to a snow-bound avenue filled with old movie posters and her new companions in the best closing sequence I've ever seen on film.

Changes all the time but right now...

Apocalypse Now
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Raging Bull
The Godfather
Blade Runner
