Watchmen made practically 200m WW with a divisive crowd and R rating. And the other two you mentioned were regarded as being bad films with under 50% approval ratings and not having strong marketing in general. And sometimes even the badly reviewed ones make money, Green Hornet and Ghost Rider made cash.
Blade, The Crow, Kick Ass, Sin City, Chronicle, Hancock, Iron Man and Hellboy all did fine. If a movie looks cool and marketting does their job and makes the audience aware, then people will see it.
Fantastic Four wasn't a very good movie but the first movie did well at the box-office.
And those movies you mentioned did okay for their budget, but seriously except for Hancock and Iron Man, none of those films were massive at the box-office.
