The competition you face in the subsequent(and prior) weeks plays a major factor. The first avengers was a master class in this.
Looking at the forecast, StarWars seems to have the edge, they have that crafty james cameron spot. All they need to be is good and it's clear sailing for what 2 very dead months. Not sure how the films slated this early summer will do.
Novelty is very hard to consistently control. This is even more unclear in the case of Avatar 2. When you are selling the crowd on something for the 'first time', the second time you sell it, things can go either way. Sequels to big films do tend to yield higher but when they are this big...it's pretty hard.

I think in the end Disney will win.

I just have to say I think AOU will make more but I am interested to see how both do. I think AOU could make less money then the first because the first one was the first time that there was a movie with super hero's teaming up like this and so now not having that big first it could make less. Now with SW7 I don't think it I a lock to make a billion like a lot of people think because I think the prequles really turned people away and so I think a lot of people are questing if it will be good or not I know I am. The first trailer didn't really show enough to say one way or not if the movie looks good. With that said bring some of the old cast back and with how big star wars fan base is if the movie is good the movie could really take off but I think a lot of people are questing this movie right now.

I'm not sure which movie will get more money but I know Disney is going to be happy either way.:p

AMC Movie talk discussed this topic. Verdict was divided.

The Avengers IS the Star Wars of this generation. I think they will win the Box office this time.

Avengers 2 - 1.7 Billion
Star Wars 7 - 1.2 Billion

The reason I said Star Wars was because of the cross generational appeal of the franchise. For example, my in-laws are in their 60s and have not seen any of the MCU films in the theater. However, when I told them a new SWs movie was being made with the original actors, they were really excited and said they wanted to see it.

In the end, it doesn't really matter, the big winner is going to be Disney either way.

If judging by the hysteria around the new SW7 trailer is any indication, I think AoU might be unseated.

^It isn't. Star Wars fans have always been pretty excitable in my experience. I mean, so are comics fans but Star Wars folks especially are. They're more like Harry Potter fans in that regard. Again, that's just my own anecdotal observation.

SW might take the lead for a bit. Seems like it has more history to drive it early on in the rat race.

I'm just saying, if the Disney marketing machine convinces the mainstream audience that this is true to the original Star Wars, and the reviews and word of mouth back that up? All bets are off.

How many people think Avengers 2 will break Avengers 1's box office haul?

I can hardly find one reason why not....even if avengers 2 sucks, it will make more money than the 1st one.

Look at spider-man 3

The only reason to go with Star Wars here is imo that Avengers will have competition while Star Wars will run on in a very weak part of the cinema year.

I was thinking Avengers - then "Chewie, we're home" happened.

Hey everyone, I am new to the hype, I am a long time lurker and finally joining, I look forward to talking with everyone. I think it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top of the 2015 box office. I am on team #avengers age of ultron. I agree the real winner is Disney

You know what this Star Wars vs Avengers BO speculative battle reminds me of? Indiana Jones 4 vs TDK from 2008. Proponents of Indy also used some of the same arguments used by Star Wars fans here, that Indy has the brand name, the iconography, the older people, old Harrison Ford, etc. And they had a far, FAR, better case, as BB was hardly the box office phenomenon The Avengers was. Yet Indy still ended up losing.

I sure Indy attracted the older people, but did it compel the teenagers in the theater, that lucrative audience completely enthralled by TDK and now AOU? That same question remains of Star Wars. We will see.

Star Wars is bigger than Indiana Jones, I'm expecting it to dominate the box office. If it doesn't it will be a big surprise. I love both these series, but...it's Star Wars.

I'm getting that impression as well. In my experience, people seem more stoked for SW as of late.

Even if it's another TPM, I expect it to do gangbusters, especially in China.

I think Avengers will win the 2015 box office comfortably, and SW will have to fight Bond 24 and possibly Hunger Games 3.2 for the second place.

Age of Ultron is following a movie which made more than 1.5 billion at the box office worldwide and was hailed by critics, fans and general audiences all over the world.

SW7 is following a trilogy of movies which made just under 850 million on average (PTM 1030, AOTC 650, ROTS 850) and got mixed reviews from critics, fans and general audiences.

It would be unreasonable, in my opinion, to expect SW7 to beat Avengers.

Yeah but the mixed reviews were under Fox.

Mickey is going to eat Fox's lunch and we're all going to love it!

I voted for Avengers and I'm still surprised it seems to be winning.

Being a terrible movie factored in as well for Indy. Granted IMO both were terrible that year but the rest of audiences only agreed with me on Indy4. Had Indy4 been stellar who knows how it would have ended up. It still made $300m DOM and near $800m WW despite being bad. Had it been well received it likely could have crossed the $1 billion mark.

Well JJ better do a better job then than he did with the Star Trek series.
