What should Marvel do with Bucky?

One thing though. Bucky makes perfect sense when he's a 16yo boy in 1943.

I mean, I know dudes who were known as Tommy, and Billy, and Robbie, etc. when they were kids. Now that they're adults, does anyone call them that? No.

It'd be kinda dumb for a 30yo guy - let alone a guy who's a super badass superhero - to still be going around with the name Bucky like when he was a kid.

Honestly, I still think of Captain Bucky O'Hare before I think of Bucky. :o

Actually, strike that. Tommy still goes by Tommy.

And we mock him behind his back for it. :o

You don't know 30-somethings who still go by Joe or Joey or Tommy or whatever? Tons of people keep their nicknames straight through their entire lives.

As I said above, we mock him for it.

I do know a Joey. But Joey's more acceptable due to the number of Joeys in the Italian mobs.

I've never seen a wiseguy named Bucky.

But you've seen a total badass superhero named Bucky. Why doesn't he get to be an exception to the rule based on badassery like Joey?

If there was only one wiseguy named Joey, he'd be made fun of too. :o

But fine, Corp. Let's call him Bucky. So what if Falcon, Luke Cage, and all of the guys down at the bar laugh at him. It's all about you. Forget Bucky's dignity.

Bucky's dignity is assured by not shying away from the name he's been proud to use for his entire life. By not letting others dictate how he should perceive himself. By standing up for what's right in the face of certain ridicule. Bucky is a TRUE hero, damn it! :argh:

It's still his real name. Needs a proper code name. That's reason #437 why Jean Grey sucks. :o

Bucky isn't really his name, its James Buchanan Barnes. Bucky was a nick name the soldiers gave him because he was like their kid mascot.
I know that origin has been changed, making him a young kid picked specifically to be trained by Captain America. But still its his nickname.

But all this is sort of what I was talking about.
He can't be Winter Soldier anymore, after he cleans up the mess, because of the badness connected to him being an unstoppable evil Russian Assassin.
He can't be Bucky anymore, he is way to grown up and dark and brooding to be the happy go lucky kid partner of Captain America, Bucky, anymore.
He can't be Captain America anymore because Steve is Cap and also from what I was told his connection to being Winter Soldier ruined his being Cap.

So where does he go from there?
Sounds like he is a man without a country, sort of. Like when Cap quite being Captain America and dressed as US Agent, or when Cap became Nomad. Just saying there are similarities.
I do think his latest "go to" identity is Winter Soldier, and I am sure if Marvel felt like it they could explain him into any costumed identity, including Winter Soldier, they wanted. But It just seems like, on the surface, he is left with little options.

I can see him, Fury, and (I think) Sharon Carter, teaming up and being a team of secret agents who used the [BLACKOUT]Infinity Formula[/BLACKOUT].

I am sure that the story about Barnes cleaning up the Sleeper Winter Soldier stuff could take a year or two and could even drift into a different story, like you expect him to fight all these guys and do spy stuff to break up the bad guy spy ring, but the story takes a different turn where he is no longer just stopping the whole Sleeper Agent thing but is now working against a bigger threat and it never fully returns to the Sleeper Agent stuff.
And that idea could take another few years. Look how long it took for Winter Soldier to become Captain America.
But if they do try to bring him into being a public hero again, like Captain America and the Avengers... that's what I was talking about. I do enjoy everyone's ideas and their takes on this stuff.

Bucky's short for Buchanan, so, yeah, it's his name.

That sounds like something a nerd's mom would tell them after they just got a swirly in the irls bathroom at school.

Yeah, I guess. Its like calling someone named Robert Bob or Walter Wally, or Richard Dick, or Christine Kitty. But its more like a nick name sounding name than a James. But I still think he can't exactly be called Bucky now, it doesn't really seem to fit him anymore. He has grown out of it. Like, sort of, when Nightwing grew out of being Robin. He didn't alter his costume and become an Adult Robin. So, similarly, he probably shouldn't call himself Bucky anymore.
Did he go by Bucky in the movie? Or was it Barnes most of the time? I don't remember Tommy Lee Jones calling him Bucky.
And I agree, Bucky is his real name, like Nick Fury or Sharon Carter or Jean Grey or Charles Xavier (heh). He maybe could use a code name. That might help solidify his status in the Marvel Universe more.

My theory, even though I'd rather Marvel did something different, is that Marvel will have him do this covert stuff which will take up a year or two. It will move along and take some turns that weren't expected in the beginning and eventually lead to a different place. The different place will probably lead to a different story, which will take up another year or two. And all this time he will probably be called Barnes and Winter Soldier and hardly ever Bucky (by maybe Steve Rogers) and never Captain America or a different superhero name. His costume will probably be his Winter Soldier gear.
So probably he will be the Winter Soldier for another few years and that will sort of be his go to costume instead of being Bucky.
Winter Soldier already has his own action figure.

To me though it felt like Bucky died, but then he returned as the Winter Soldier (who was a bad guy) so I was waiting for him to become good again and become a new hero. But then Civil War happened (and he was trying to come to grips with his Winter Soldier past) and then Cap's death (and he had to take over so no one else would). So, to me, it felt like his character was in limbo for a while trying to decide who he was and what to do, and I was waiting for him to choose something more permanent. I knew he wouldn't be Cap forever, but I thought he might wear that Cap costume without the mask or shield. Just something more permanent to show that he is staying I guess.

I feel like BUCHANAN: AGENT OF ONE would be the title of an awesome 70s B-Movie.

Do you think he will, after the run of his latest mission to stop the Sleeper Agent covert spy stuff, do you think he will become a public hero again like when he was on the Avengers?
He went from being brainwashed to working in private with Fury during Civil War, to becoming Captain America on the Secret Avengers. Now that he is "DEAD" do you think Marvel will just keep him in secret or bring him back to the spotlight after the Sleeper Agent Winter Soldier stuff?

I think Brubaker will be pretty much done with Cap by that time, meaning Bucky's future is wide open. New writer means he might get better or worse or be completely forgotten.

My money's on Worse then killed again in another event.
