So I saw this thread on another forum and figured it was a pretty cool idea. Obviously there's still more awesome games to come, but what titles surprised you pleasently? Or bet it not so pleasently...

The biggest surprise for me is definately Dead Space. I figured it was going to be solid for some scares, something lacking in this gen, but I had no idea it was going to turn out as great as it was. It stands out as my 3rd favorite game on the PS3 now, just after Call of Duty 4 and MGS4. The game sits up there with Resident Evil 4 easily, impressive for something thought would keep me happy until 5.

The Pixel Junk series also stepped up a gear after the terrible Pixel Junk Racing, and both Monsters and Eden are fantastic titles.

MGS4... you can't help not by surprised at that.

Oh and Alone in the Dark sucked... I actually on the other hand thought they had something really special there.

Oops, meant the multiplatform forum...

Hippie Hunter, could I get a move please?

MGS4 for me, I knew the graphics were going to be incredible but not to the level I experienced, playing that game is a mind blowing experience. Without a doubt the best game I have played all year so far.

MGS4 didnt surprise me bc I knew it was going to be amazing based on past experiences with the series

What surprised me was all these game installs for the PS3. Such a big deal was made out of DMC4, but then so many others followed. I dont get why this wasnt much of an issue for first year titles, but its been so prevalent this year.

JPmorgan buying WaMu for 2 billion j/k
I think FFXIII going to 360 was the biggest one for me

Dead Space came out of nowhere to be a fantastic game.

I was expecting Dead Space to be amazing, so it didn't surprise me. Force Unleashed surprised me with how terrible it was though.

Fallout 3. It isn't just good, it's fantastic. And it proved that Bethesda can still make a good RPG if they want to.

With Fallout 3, I remember seeing the screens, thinking first person shooter/rpg what in the world? And then actually playing it the first time, I thought I had made the wrong purchase until the further I got, the more I started waking up and thinking of the game, I started to get blown away. Really threw me for a loop. Awesome game.

Solid Snake and Sonic being in SSBB. Never thought I'd see third party characters in Nintendo, crossovers in general I'm surprised to see but this was definitely a big one.

and Diablo III's announcement. I thought I'd forever be re-installing Diablo II

Tales of Vesparia surprised me greatly. A friend of mine who works at a game store jusr randomly showed it to me and at the time I thought it was just some standard RPG. Take in mind that I was unaware there was a series of Tales games much like the Final Fantsy games. I wound up renting this game 3 times before buying it outright.

The biggest surprise for me was just how good Metal Gear Solid 4 was. I mean i should have known, i loved the 3 previous MGS, but MGS4 is by far the most brilliantly crafted video game that has hit the market. Fantastic game.

Some other things i was surprised about was how fun The Force Unleashed was. IMO, it featured one of the best Star Wars stories ever told.

The news of Activision dropping Ghostbusters was also a surprise for me.

Spiderman Web of Shadows turned out to be quite bad as well i thought i would have fun but i got bored within the first 15 minutes.

Mirror's Edge.

I played the demo and am convinced I need to get it. Didn't think that would happen.

Yea i thought the demo was pretty fun as well, but then i read some of the reviews and they stated just how short the game was. Ill prob pick it up way down the line when it drops in price.

Yeah, although...I've noticed that short games aren't that short with me. I seem to milk every game for all it's worth usually...and take my sweet ass time with them. I couldn't even begin to list off the games I'm STILL in the middle of as of now.

It's embarassing really.

Haha, its the same with me dude, don't worry. I've barely scratched Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and a few more. I just kinda seem to buy games when I've got plenty to play already...

That's so spoiled. :(

Mirror's Edge and Spider-Man : Web of Shadows were suprisingly good. Also, Fallout 3. I wasn't a huge fan of Oblivion so I didn't know if I was going to like this or not, but I got it anyway out of curiosity. I was amazed after about 5 minutes. I've put god knows how many hours into it and haven't even touched the main quest.

Can't think of anything that greatly surprised me in 2008, but I'm going to cheat and use something that surprised me this gen, Uncharted. I've owned it for awhile, and when I bought it I didn't expect it to be that good. It's one of those rare games that I could easily find myself going to a movie made about this, that had great voice acting, a great story, great gameplay, etc. It really did surprise me, I didn't expect it to be half as good as it was, after all of this time I still play it.

Guess I should go with something this year...I guess Resistance 2. I skipped Resistance 1 and didn't buy it until it went on the greatest hits list, the story actually pulled me in. I started looking forward to 2, then I saw the gigantic boss fight, and heard it had online co-op...yeah I'd say Resistance 2 was a pleasant surprise for me. Tho can't buy it atm, money has to go elsewhere atm, it's on my to buy list lol.
