The Two Popes
- I've finally been catching up on the Awards Season films I missed last year. This one was really great to watch. Two top-shelf veterans of their work giving their all, but I was most attentive to the really fascinating directing and camerawork.
I need to see this just to see Hopkins being in some really good movie again (which I hope this is), IMHO I feel he's been kinda wasted in some mediocre stuff during these last 10 years.

Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope
I always get confused for a split-second reading that long title. Then I always also realise: Yeah, because all the hysterical hype about this upcoming film back in -77 stamped the name "Star Wars" in my then little brain forever. And I guess that's what I always will call it myself. I was 11 yo, and of course it was a hell of a cinema experience.

I wasn't born for another thirteen years when it was released theatrically, but I'll forever call it Star Wars, as well.

I definitely think it's the best film and role he's had in a good while. He and Pryce play great off each other, and the directing style and cinematography really makes it interesting beyond just the central performances.

I like how this may be the only film where Clint Eastwood plays a clean-cut boy scout to someone else's gruff, macho badass.

I saw it many months ago too. I ended up liking Maltese Falcon more, Big Sleep is a bit overly convoluted.

I remember hearing a story that director Howard Hawks actually called the author Raymond Chandler to ask about a plot hole in the script and the latter admitted that even he had no idea if the story makes any sense.

Out of the Past.

Old film noir. Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and Jane Greer. Lots of good dialogue and one really bad girl. I liked it.

Whatever happened during the release of this? I feel like I’m blanking out on how the promo tours went on this one (if they did one at all in the first place). Not as enjoyable as the first one unfortunately.

I think I fell asleep halfway through when I watched this on the plane so I rewatched it. Very predictable unfortunately.

Scoob!

A mostly entertaining reinvention of Scooby Doo. I like how it takes all the past iterations and spin it in a more modern direction. It uses a lot of nostalgia early on and I thought it mostly worked. As the movie goes alone, It was obvious they pretty much wanted to make a Marvel universe out of the Hanna Barbera characters like Blue Falcon and Dick Dasterdly. Storywise, it's not that remarkable and they use a lot of the same animation tropes, but it keeps you interested. I actually like how they use the animation, it's in 3D, but they use a lot of the same 2D animation tricks. Overall, it's a very standard animation movie, but having Scooby Doo and the Hanna Barbera characters bumps it above average.
3/5
