Spider-Man: Far From Home

Had a few problems with it, but it's ultimately a fun Spider-Man movie. And in many ways, this is more meant to be a movie about life after Tony Stark. My major issue with this movie is early on. I can't tell whether its studio interference or a bad editor, but the first hour of it feels very sluggish. There's no sense of downtime for any of these characters. They quickly move from one spot to the other. What saves this movie for me are the characters moments and interactions with Peter and his classmates. Tom Holland continues to be great as Peter Parker and I dig the comedic moments with the globe trotting summer class trip. Once Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio enters the equation and you get that reveal, it slowly became a better movie. As for Nick Fury and Maria Hill, I thought they were sleepwalking through it, but I get why they did it. Another problem I had with it was it relied on way too much noticeable CG, but I suppose you can't really have a villain like Mysterio and not have an abundance of CG. As a whole, I thought it was fine for a Spider-Man movie but slightly disappointing, I really do hope they give time for the next movie to breathe like Homecoming.

Midsommer

Horrifying and disturbing but I loved it. After being so disappointed with Hereditary, this was exactly the movie I was expecting with Ari Aster. It's a movie that is fully aware of what their aiming for and the similarities to other cult horror movies, mainly the original Wicker Man. The movie operates very slowly and methodically which might be a turn off for some people, but I thought it worked really well. The best way to describe it is like playing in quicksand, a lot of the horror slowly creeps up to you. The cast and performances were wonderful, but Florence Pugh is the clear standout. She basically gave a Oscar award level performance as someone who's suffering from loss and painful panic attacks. The cinematography and direction is also a big highlight for me, they do a lot with bright lighting and shadows. The gore can be fantastical at times but it also works really well. Overall, I dug it a lot. It's a vast improvement for Ari Aster and while this might seem more accessible for the mainstream, it's also gonna test their patience.

Did I say that this is mildly better than Captain Marvel in another thread? It's more than mildly better, and I think both are equally enjoyable.

Protagonist is a dude named Billy and has a kid friend, that song Billy's mom hears played in her house before killing a few Gremlins plays here too, on Christmas, with John Glover, Mr. Clamp from Gremlins 2.

Any more reminders of Gremlins? Not that I can think of right now.

TASM = about 8/10 and TASM2 is probably around 6/10

I still really like Andrew as Spider-Man and Lizard is probably my favorite Spidey villain, even though they could have done a lot better with him.
