Tons of fun. Once it gets going, it's a non-stop series of tightly crafted horror sequences.

Under the Silver Lake

A phenomenal neo-noir mystery that's got a lot of ambition. David Robert Mitchell pretty much took the culture of Hollywood and spin it as a well made satire. In a way, this reminded me of The Big Lebowski and Rian Johnson's Brick. There's also a lot of Hitchcock themes they play with which wasn't really subtle, but I dug it. There's a lot of meta commentary about pop culture and the urge to find mystery and riddles in the internet age. It's probably my favorite Andrew Garfield performance, he pretty much owed the screen from start to finish. The rest of the cast was also pretty good, particularly Riley Keough and Topher Grace. Overall, it's pretty much what PTA's Inherent Vice was trying to be, but this was able to do it with ease.

Watched Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior today. Drastically better than the first, imo!

Now I'm watching Mad Max: Fury Road

Yesterday

Pretty average for the most part. I'm not a huge fan of the Beetles so I don't have the nostalgia that comes with this movie, but I do think they could have done better with the execution of the premise. While early on they do try to commit to the bit, it loses what the film should have been and instead they focus on the mundane romantic dramedy. It really felt like there was an original cut that had way more of the premise. I will say though, performance wise, Himesh Patel and Lily James were great and the Patel's covers were pretty damn good. Overall, it's just alright.

Crawl

A pretty well done summer creature feature despite some problems I have with it. The plot is pretty straight forward, but they do a good job with it by trying to make you care for the characters before sh** hits the fan. Kaya Scodelario was great and she pretty much had to carry this movie by herself. The pretty much used the same shark movie tropes but Alligators instead. Some of the kills were really well done, but I do have to say this had some common action/horror movie mistakes that kinda bring this down. It's no where near as perfect as other creature horror flicks like The Shallows or Jaws, but it's a fun little horror flick.

The Public

I thought it was really good. This is possibly the best thing Emilio Estevez has done in years. It's a pretty fascinating commentary on the homeless, society, and moral dilemmas. What I dug the most about it is the pacing and the directing because it feels like a very old school approach to the filmmaking. I feel like this would have been big if it came out in the late 90s/early 2000s. It's got a big cast and pretty much everyone did a fantastic job with their performance, Emilio Estevez especially. Overall, it's one of the best hidden gems of the year.
