What's the best clay?

I was thinking about dabbling in clay, but I was not sure what kind to look for. I would prefer a clay that is good for sculpting, especially with details, and doesn't need to baked in a kilm or oven. I would also like it to be paintable.

Are there any decent kinds of clay out there that air dry?
