What's Your Marvel Comics Guilty Pleasure?

Now you're just being silly.

You see, it's a great mag not for reviews, or the fervor in which they promote every event that comes out. It's in the exclusive interviews, the great columns they put together like the recent conversation between Goyer, BKV, and a couple of other Hollywood types about how influential Watchmen was. Their spotlights on indie books. I've tried out tons of stuff over the years because I saw mentions of it in Wizard at some point or another. If you're an anal retentive *****e bag, then I suppose I can see how you could dislike Wizard, but if all you read it for is to see if the consensus is that everybody hates what you hate, then you should just stick to message boards.

Yeah, the thing is, I don't need to know why BKV think Watchmen is influential. I don't care. The spotlights on indie books are enything but. When's the last time Wizard put the shiner on a real indie title? Try 1998.

Try Fraction's Casanova, The Lone Ranger, as well as various other indie books that seemed too sad little goth girl for me to bother checking out. It's a regular column in every issue.

You think Casanova is an indie book? Damn. If you want indie, try Killing Pickman. It comes out tomorrow. Or try Akiko, the last true indie book Wizard put a spotlight on.

Nothing with an Image logo is independent, dude.

Sorry, but Casanova is creator owned, and while it might get a bit more exposure than books from like, Avatar Press or Boom!, it's still pretty much up to the creator to get it out there, and Wizard makes a effort to put the word out there for good book. Of course that's hard to do when all anybody does is flip to the movie section, then flip to the whatever the f**k is going on with the big two section then state the book is crap cuz they're saying buy something that they personally think is crap.

Also, have you read Alison Bechdel's Fun Home? Or The Bomb from A-10 comics? How about Black Diamond? I'm telling you dude, they do a column on indie stuff every freakin' month. Stuff most people never heard of.

Then you got the toy section, for the collectors. Not quite Toy Fare, but it gets the job done.

Then you got various issue by issue interviews with creators about some of the top books in comics. Like when they sat down with Wolfman and perez and went issue by issue with Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Exclusive art work from some of the top names in comics. Including this awesome Suydam pic he did just for Wizard.

Half the time, I think people just blast Wizard just cuz everybody else is. Or it's just the anti popular element that hates on everything that's kewl. You know who you are. :p

The Zombie series is weird...

Do you know what independent is? It has nothing to do with exposure. Something that has the backing of a large publishing company can't be independent. An indie book is one that's self-published, or damn near self-published. Image books have editors just like Marvel or DC, and those editors breathe down the creator's necks to meet deadlines. You might own the characters, but you're still working for a company. Fraction and Ba independently own the characters, but they don't independently print or publish the book. Image does that. In fact, that's why creators take their concepts to Image in the first place. They do it all for you. Hardly independent. Don't confuse creator-owned for indie. They're completely different.

Also, have you read Alison Bechdel's Fun Home? Or The Bomb from A-10 comics? How about Black Diamond? I'm telling you dude, they do a column on indie stuff every freakin' month. Stuff most people never heard of.

I haven't read all of those books, but I know what they are. I have been picking up Black Diamond, though. I'd call that a indie book. Larry Young is essentially self publishing it, being the publisher of AiT/Planet Lar and all.

Yeah, that's nothing I'm not going to see in the internet when the book drops. I don't need to pay $5 or however much Wizard costs these days to read about how Wolfman remembers his old comics.

I don't like Wizard because it's hack journalism. It's supposed to be a magazine reporting on comics and comic culture. Instead, it's turned into this corporate money making scheme that is clearly not above working with a publisher to deceive fans into thinking that a comic book is something it's not to increase sales for that publisher (The Sentry, anyone?). Why do I want to buy a magazine that I can't trust to just report the ****ing news and leave the comic book making to the creators? The short answer is, I don't. If that's your thing, that's fine.

Yeah, well, that's all fine and dandy Mr. Corporate outrage, and you are entitled to your opinion however pretentious and melodramatic it may be, but to say this:

That's not even a guilty pleasure. That's the same as saying, "i is dum".

Only shows that you take this s**t far too seriously. It's just comics. Entertainment for the escapist element. Nothing more. I guess "I is dum", but the fact that you even give a f**k in the first place is the same as saying "I have no life."

Oh yeah...I went there. :o :p

You're right, it is just comics. But that doesn't mean I read every piece of garbage that winds up on store shelves. Do you? And if so, I guess you really can't complain, can you? I mean, it is just comics, right? To complain or voice an opinion, however negative would be taking it too seriously.

PJ was raped by a Wizard magazine as a child. That's where this hate comes from.

*waits for C. lee*

Of course you don't need to pay $5, but if you want to, you can.

And knowing is half the battle.

But others do, so in short: Get over it.

And for the record, it's $5.99. :o

Again, if that's you're logic, you can't say anything negative about a book you don't like. For example, all the Ant-Man hate. Nadda, now.

No, there's a difference though. You created this thread to state guilty pleasures, and whether under your inane definition Wizard is one or not, it's irrelevant. It is someone's guilty pleasure. No one rode your ass on your guilty pleasures or called you a girly man for liking Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, so don't you think the same respect be given to other poster's guilty pleasures? Of course, you'll come back with a smartass answer, but Anubis isn't dumb, and most people who read that trash called Wizard aren't dumb, so to make such a post was, dumb.

And for the record, people who read Ant-Man are pretty much saying "I is dumb".:o :o :o :o :o :o

I'll be playing Wolfenstein for the next hour or so, please feel free to hold off on a response.

You have a point. This thread is indeed about guilty pleasures, so Anubis reading Wizard in and of itself isn't stupid, even if the magazine is. I should have clarified that.

That doesn't change the fact that this wasn't really about Anubis reading Wizard, but about Wizard itself. Which is fair game, as far as I'm concerned. That and the twisted logic that we're not allowed to say anything bad about something for fear that someone else might dig it. Or we might be taking things "too seriously".

And for the record, I don't think Anubis is dumb. I was making a comment about the magazine itself. Sorry it came off that way. But I'll continue to post my thoughts, at the risk of taking things "too seriously".

**** other people's feelings. And I don't think you took this seriously, you just sounded like a pretentious ass throughout the debate, that's all.

What's pretentious about not liking Wizard?

Dinner is served.

Insert incest joke about Supes eating his cousin.

Nothing, the way you talk about hating it, is another story, coupled with your definition of what an indie book is, well, yeah you sounded pretentious. Live with it.

I didn't even think of going there.:csad:
