I'm thinking about replacing my 40" Sony Bravia.

I've had it for about two and a half years and since then, I've moved into my own place with a large living room and the 40" ain't cuttin' it.

I know I want to move up to a 55" 1080pLED-lit LCD but it seems like 60-70% of all my choices out there now are 3D TVs. Up until now, I've only enjoyed 3D on my 3DS or in movies and so I've never had an experience with a 3D TV, nor does the idea of getting one particularly entice me...

However, if it's worth it (and if I won't have a choice), I'll probably end up getting one. Can anyone here give me some feedback on 3D TVs and how good they are?

This is the model that I'm leaning towards right now:

You really can't go wrong with a Sony BRAVIA (they are the top of the line TVs), so I say go for it.

Just wait... glasses-less 3D is coming out soon. They've already been announced and tested.

glasses-less 3D is years away. the first versions will be test versions so that they see what the buyers think.

today i would only buy a 3D tv if i played 3d games. for 3D movies i think its better to have an unique experience in the theaters.

Well I never saw the need for one until the other day where I saw they had one on display and it was quite impressive. The biggest surprise was the price, it was around a 100 or so more than a regular tv so for me its worth it.

Besides I'm not 100% sure but can't you not turn off the 3D so its only really something you will experience when you really want to.

Well yeah, that's the thing---the top of the line Bravia 55" non-3D TV is only $300 less than the next 55" 3D TV, which has even more technology on it...

I suppose the technology isn't all that expensive of an option and yep, even with that, it's like a "nice to have" capability that I probably won't even utilize myself 95% of the time--I have a couple of 3D games but that's about it..

My friend had one.
I thought it was extremely stupid.

3D is a neat option but one I'd rarely use. Personally I wouldn't buy one until the glasses-free version comes out. Also, the next big thing in TVs is going to be voice control thanks to the success of Apple's Siri. At a recent technology expo all the biggest brands were showing off voice interfaces.
In fact there are strong rumours that Apple is even going to start putting out their own TVs soon with some pretty crazy options (and voice controls of course).

No I completely agree I doubt I'd use the 3D either, maybe once or twice to show off but thats about it. I guess it depends if you think its worth spending the extra $300 for something you would hardly use. Its different for me because its only 100€ more.

I use Nvidia 3d for playing games with my monitor.
The actual 3d seems to work much better for video games than it does for 3d movies. When I watch 3d movies, I only really notice the 3d very slightly. The depth is much more prominent in games. The downside however is that it makes reading text very hard. So It's generally only really useful for games that don't require it much like racing games, third person and first person shooters. For something like an MMO or an RTS, it's practically useless. Whiich is somewhat dissapointing, World of Warcraft and Shogun 2 look pretty darn awsome in 3d. It makes the scale of the games feel much larger. For Shogun 2 in particular, it makes an already epic scaled game even larger.

I only got a 3D version cause it came with a Playstation 3...

I have a Panasonic VT30 50"

Absolutely love it! It's also brilliant as a 2D TV.

Glass-less will come fore sure in a few years, but it will take some time till those get "cheap". And let's be honest, nowadays people don't buy a tv to have him 20 years.

I would rather go to a poetry night at an old folk's home than sit in front of a 3D television, seriously, these are a sign that the human race needs to start getting out of the house more.
Now and again it would be fun, but man, it would be too easy to be sitting in the house mesmerised by it.
You die and your whole life flashes before you, and you can't tell what you were doing for most of it because you don't have your 3D glasses on.

Bro, that's deep.

Well, I think it's due to the fact that in recent years I have been stuck in the house a lot, and have not been able to partake in normal activities even when I do get out, due to the nature of my work , and that has made me appreciate the simple pleasures of getting the hell out of the house and making sure you have other worthwhile activities on the go than watching the telly and chatting on forums.

but, y'know, look where i am, most of the folk on here are on here almost every night of the week, so obviously you are gonna be sarcastic like i am saying i am better minded than you or something.
I just...wish I had the freedom of choice that other folk on here have, because I sure as hell wouldn't be on the net and watching tv all the time if I did.
It is easy to fill up your time with the net especially, and feel like you are doing something fulfilling, when you really arn't.

these 3D tvs remind me of the Riddler boxes in BF, and that is depressing in a way.

this should be in the tech section of the forum anyway, if you only want to talk tv tech. :oldrazz: because this is what i think of 3D tvs right now.

Overpriced gimmick that is probably going to die out. With live action, unless it's made to be in 3D (like Avatar), it doesn't look that good. With animation, it can look good but scenes with a lot of motion are slightly blurred.

No way in hell would I pay for a 3D TV, I'm so tired of this fad. I do have a funny story though, my cousin bought a 3D TV and had his family over for Thanksgiving one year. One of his nephews broke a pair of the glasses, so now he only has one pair of glasses. I think it's a waste of money, there's little to no 3D programming on TV and there never will be because they can't upcharge people for TV programs like they do with movies, which is the only reason studios are using 3D.

I own one. It's beyond cool. Guess depends on income though. I'm also a film guy though, so...

It sounds like you're just talking about 3D in general...

Like with the Wii, everything initially starts out as a gimmick, but it's slowly starting to win people over. The technology and the way it's being applied is getting better and better.

Don't fight it...You better embrace it. We can't live in the stone age forever.

You seriously think that in 20 years from now, TVs are going to be exactly the same as they are now? It's only going to get better and 3D is the logical step towards that. It's not a gimmick as much as its a marketable and exciting exercise in the metamorphosis in technology.

I own one. It's beyond cool. Guess depends on income though. I'm also a film guy though, so...

Y'know, I watched X-Men First Class in high definition, and it really spoiled the sfx at the end of the film, you could see the CGI so clearly that the missles looked like pencils, you could tell they were fake, and they had far less weight to them as a result.
But, on dvd, they look completely real, because you are not allowed to look so closely.

So, obviously if the sfx technology has not caught up to the tech you are watching it on, it does not benefit the film.

Ive heard similar complaints about PJ's King Kong, and XMOWolverine, greenscreen being obviously used in ceratin scenes, where it was not so obvious before.

If it was a regular movie without such computer generated effects, then it would not be a problem.
But even then, there can be problems, actors wear make-up for a reason, it covers up blemishes, and is so the lighting can have a certain effect.
But man, i recall an article talking about hi-def tech, and it saying that Ray Liotta's spotty face was now a problem on his tv show, haha. I didn't say it Ray, if you are reading.

So, there can be problems here, do you really want to feel like you are looking right into someone's big massive face as if it is really in the room? Or do you want some distance from the action, that might benefit your viewing experinence?

and that's what I'm thinking about here, would I enjoy 3D versions of movies, or would it detract from the experience, because, right now, I am quite happy with watching dvds, i can get immersed completely in a movie if it has a good story and characters, why do I need to feel like their big 3D faces looming out of my tv would benefit the experience.

Y'know, I could see it obviously benefiting computer games, those are interactive worlds, and the more realistic the world is, the more immersed you can get, and i think it's very telling that people in the thread have highlighted how much fun they get from computer games using a 3D tv, rather than pinpointing films that particularly benefitted from the tech.
