What's your opinion of 3D TVs?

glasses-less 3D is years away. the first versions will be test versions so that they see what the buyers think.

Not really. Sony, Toshiba, Samsung and others have been showing theirs at expos and such since 09-10. And Toshiba has glassless tvs on sale in Europe as of last month (based on an article announcing it this past September), with others slated for late 2012/early 2013.

I think it's a waste of money, there's little to no 3D programming on TV and there never will be because they can't upcharge people for TV programs like they do with movies, which is the only reason studios are using 3D.
Not if you're Martin Scorcese, James Cameron, or Steven Spielberg...

Those guys believe in the technology and if you've seen Avatar (I hope you have), Hugo, or Tintin, you'll realize that there are many filmmakers out there that truly and honest are pushing 3D as the next step in creating a truly immersive experience. I think they're on the right track and if it costs a little bit more to produce and support 3D movies, then why shouldn't we pay more until they find a cheaper way?

The trick is to know what 3D movies are truly made to compliment the movie or if they were done just as an attempt to edge their box office returns...

Judging by the movies I've seen in theaters and in 3D, I think it's dumb. The picture doesn't even look good.

3D is the most pointless thing I've ever seen. So I'd go with a big massive no on 3D TV's. I don't get the big thing about why it's so awesome.

The 3DS has pretty plausible 3D, so long as you're looking at it straight on and can actually see out of both eyes.

As I said before, there's nothing that's going to keep us from continuing to advance this technology...

Sure, we've gotten better in terms of making our TVs flatter, achieving better resolution, better sound, digital, wi-fi streaming and all that, but 3D is the thing that we must have as a lily pad to creating an even better and immersive watching experience. Talk to any scientist who has studied our trends in technology and the next logical step will have to come in the form of 3D or a version of hard light technology or holograms. 3D should be considered the first iteration of this process.

I remember reading about the complaints back in the 1920's about how sound in movies was pointless and how color in TV/movies in the 1940's was pointless..

But people eventually came around to it.. :D

Let's remember that 3D is still an extremely new technology (relative speaking), despite it being everywhere (phones, movies, tv, books, games,..etc). 3D was still in conceptual stages back in the late 80's, early 90's, but it was limited by the technology at the time. Now, I think that we're finally getting the hang of it and now that the technology is now becoming profitable, we're seeing an exponential growth in the motivation to make it better and better. At this rate, I think it'll only take a good 5 more years before it is commonplace and/or evolved into something everyone can accept.

I actually enjoy having the option of having the 3D at moments, especially when playing games like Zelda or Mario 3D Land. I doubt Nintendo expected most people to have the 3D turned on all the time,..

Except 3D televisions ARE pointless until the majority of programs are filmed in 3D. When that comes, then I'll buy a 3D television. Until then, I'll stick to the standard now and hope 3D dies a quick death.

As I remember it, when Blu Ray players came out, initially a lot of people thought it was pointless when there were only a few dozen Blu Ray movies to choose from...It was some of the same logic with people buying HD flatscreen TVs before more channels became HD digital and widescreen. Sure, it takes time...but it doesn't have to be looked at as a negative.

You just have to have the right perspective...

A 3D TV simply means that it's a TV that has the option to broadcast that 3D channel. That TV will have to exist beforehand--it wouldn't make sense otherwise. So, the 3D TV itself---nothing pointless about it, unless it's from your own perspective, which I'd say could be debatable.

It won't be long...

There's a difference between an improved media format such as DVD or Blu-Ray and a piece of hardware with a gimmick. Blu-Ray was going to happen, it just took awhile since it had to beat HD-DVD and become more widely available and cheaper. Blu-Ray boasts better picture, sound, and more data storage over DVD. 3D looks either the same or worse than standard HD. Is that worth an extra $500-700?

Don't buy a TV for the 3D, because you most likely won't use it very often. Buy a good TV and if it happens to have 3D, then it's a bonus.
