I was thinking about how great it is that Whedon gets to work with these characters, and even more so that he doesn't have to waste time introducing them. And I was watching Angel, and I realized that all of these characters are ones he's done before, and done very well. So here is my list of comparing the Avengers to the characters/archetypes with which Whedon has worked before:

Captain America - Buffy
rather obvious one, but blonde, beautiful, and hero with a heart of gold. Steve and Buffy share the burden of responsibility, and help people without a second guess about themselves. Steve readily sacrificed himself to save the world, as did [blackout] Buffy [/blackout]

Bruce Banner/The Hulk - Angel/Angelus
This one, i like. Angel is always working to atone for the sins of his "darker half." Reading and hearing what Ruffalo says about playing the hulk literally sounds like he's talking about angel.

Tony Stark - Willow
Tony is a super genius. I originally had willow as hulk, but that doesn't account for his sadness. Willow is a genius, and she finds great power in her intelligence. Stark is the same. No one is on his level of inventiveness, and he, like willow and her magik, gains great power. Willow's witty, too. He might also be a cross between willow and Xander.

Black Widdow - Wesley
(and by the way, these are all open to debate)
I was thinking that maybe she has been working all her life for shield, much like wesley with the council. Though wesley quit the council, Black Widdow will be a part of it, but also she will be well trained, and follow orders a bit too closely. But honestly, for this one, if you have a better idea, please let me know.

Hawkeye - Faith
Quick witted, good looking, and almost as good as buffy/cap, hawkeye and faith share the qualities that make them unique. They can be very mean at times, but would not be afraid to pick a fight with anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if hawkeye tried to fight hulk. If you've seen the show, you know how badass faith is.

Thor - Jayne?/Gruselog
Angel/Firefly fans get their calling here. Thor has the same qualities as the Gruselog: from a different dimension, more powerful than those here, and good looking. He also has many Jayne-like qualities. When Mal talks to Jayne, he knows that Jayne could literally kick anyone's ass. Jayne knows it too. Thor is also not a super-genius. He knows a hellofalot about fighting, but not much about people or how to interact with them.

Nick Fury - Giles.
End of story. Nick fury will fill the shoes of our favourite english librarian, but instead of cleaning his glasses, he'll clean his [blackout] eyepatch [/blackout]. He will help, and probably reference a badass past, but he will use his unending intelligence to help his team, but will probably take a special interest in steve. I bet the black dude in captain america was fury's dad.

Coulson - Jonathan
Coulson will probably be shat upon, maybe literally, in this movie. Jonathan was the most boring, yet funnily so, character to come out of the series. He always seems to be around, but as the butt of the joke. Though he will not die, i could see him getting a) covered in slime, b) thrown from the hellicarrier, or c) abducted by the skrulls, and no one will really care.

So that's what I was thinking about, the list is ever changing, but I just wanted some other perspectives.

Don't think tony and willow are even similar but thor/ gruselog makes sence

I'm not talking about the characters themselves, rather of the role they will fill in the whedon formula he likes to work with. IE: the heart, the brain, the warrior, the loyal friend, comic relief, dark side etc.

i know it has nothing to do with your topic, but i still remember seeing renner on angel.

I think Thor was more like Gruselog in his own movie (well-intentioned, good-looking, but comically aloof warrior). In Avengers however, with his full powers and experience, I think he'll be more of an Illyria - A more badass and confident God on earth fighting side-by-side with mortals, but still kind of amusingly out of his element.

Hawkeye - Faith

Hawkeye - Gunn

Street smart, determined and unconventional, he is ready to tackle the dirty work. A little rough around the edges, he can lead when the need arises, but is more often found in the company of more visible figures.

And that would make Loki, by default, Oz.

Yeah... gunn, i totally forgot. I just watched warzone last night, too. Gunn and faith are kind of similar now that i think about it
