That's all I've been hearing on fanboy boards discussing the new Batwoman, "it smacks of P.C. entitlement, it's nothing but political correctness," etc. Granted, going overboard isn't the best recourse, but when did diversity suddenly become a dirty word? I think people that throw around the race card are suddenly finding out they have rivals, people that throw around the term "P.C."

 i think people will start playing the veteran card in a few years:o

All of the racists and bigots accuse everything they don't like of being PC. I can't stand it.

I think it was ten years ago when I first heard terms like PC Thug, FemiNazi and dead white male bashing.

Person 1: You can't say the N word, it's not nice
Klansman: Oh boy, it's a PC thug!

If you look at the actual term "politically correct" you see what the problem people have with it. In politics one must try to not insult anyone and try to make everyone happy. However, this is not done sincerely, it's done to advance oneself.

So any particular attempt at being inoffenseive and "fair" is seen as insincere and really for self-advancement, or at least self-preservation. It's presumably not done out of any real desire for diversity.

It is also expected in jobs, etc., to act in a "PC" manner, Some feel that it should not be a thing one should feel obligated to do.

Also, as Tangled Web stated, some use it to get around accusations of bigotry. But it is not just that.

ever since people forgot how bad intolerance can be (holocaust, slavery).

It's not as if we don't make sure there is a representative of every race in a comic series, there will be mass genocide.

Yes, the term PC is bandied about excessively. But it's not as if people don't take the concept to excess. When people complain that on the show Friends that a group of friends is all white, it is ridiculous.

When I was younger I was also confused as to why the term political correctness could be used as an insult.

And then I got older.

There are many, many examples of political correctness gone totally bananas. The new Batwoman may or may not be bad political correctness, that remains to be seen. If the stories overly focused on her lesbianism, if nearly every issue focused on her struggle for equal rights, then that's bad political correctness.

Bad political correctness can come in different forms. Political correctness just for the sake of political correctness, like I stated above. Or being overly sensitive to the feelings of other people to the point that you consider almost everything a racist or homophobic slur.

Example - I was watching Ricki Lake once. There was a woman that had spent a fair amount of her life "in the closet" and the show was about her and her family unable to come to terms with her being gay. A woman in the audience was just asking a simple question. "So, when... y'know, you became gay..." the woman didn't mean that she literally just became way, it was obvious she just struggled to find another way to phrase it. Ricki Lake just jumps in and says "I must stress that gay people do not just become gay" which got an applause from the audience. Bad political correctness.

Referring to black people as African Americans - Bad political correctness, and actually quite offensive in itself. How the hell do you know that some black guy is African American? Black people come from all sorts of different countries. He could be ****ing Indian for all you know. Watching your tongue and avoiding the word "black" is needlessly sensitive to the feelings of others.

I remember reading that in America they wanted to take the word "******" (can you say that word in the boards? N1ge6? If not that's another example of bad political correctness because if anyone used the word for derogetory purposes then they should just be banned - problem solved) out of some books in school, like the classic book Huckleberry Finn or whatever it's called I've never read it. That's bad political correctness.

In today's society many people have become too political correct. It affects so much. You can't express a simple opinion without being accused of being bigoted. Me disliking people that get plastic surgery just for the sake of "looking better" is a good example. I can't judge people for their actions now???

Thats the main issuse with Politcal Correctness, I've never called anyone a "P.C. Thug" but I have accused them of using it to win an arguement/debate without having to present a valid opinion/view point.

I don't think it has anything to do with diversity or wanting to say something racist, for a few it might but others.....they just get tired of having tip toe around topics or having to hold thier tongue because somone may become offended.

I don't think black is the right term either. It's a pity we can't use "coloured". Because that's truly what they are. They have a lot more colour than we pink folk. (I have far too many freckles to be called white). They range in colour from a "coffee with cream" to an almost blue ebony. Some of them have the most lovely "tan" that I have envied most of my life.

Coloured?? You mean what rednecks used to call them all the time? Yeah, that will go down well.

actually, if you want to get down to it, white people are the more colored. Pink is close to red, which one of the primary colors, while brown (as most black people are actually brown) are closer to black, which is the absense of all colors.

I'm colored.:)

But if they would accept being called "brownies" then what would we call the little girls in the Scouts?

rdit

that's the name girl scouts should be called.

Some filipinos refer to themselves as brown.

On this general subject I don't use african american, I use black, I say skirt, chick, doll, sweetheart, sister, (I know what decade do I live in) in reference to women, during the whole immigration march I was like who'd do my lawn now.

When did we start having to be sensitive to other peoples feelings.

Coloured? I'm not coloured I was born this way.

Personall I prefer the word black.

Maybe there should be an international referendum with all the people voting on what the proper term for each different skin tone should be... Or maybe we should all go to the local paint store and pick the colour card that comes closest to our skin tone and start calling it by that name... I'ld probably be "dusty rose" or some other strange thing. ;)

1) Africa isn't a country. It's a continent.

2) I've never had a hard time distiguishing between someone from India or of Indian descent and someone from Africa or of African descent.
