When did politically correct become a term of insult?

i'm ashamed that got a chuckle out of me....

My two cents: there's a line between being overly P.C. and just not being a dick, and a lot of people don't understand how easy it is to cross that line, so it bothers them.

Political correctness is not stupid concept, but as bored stated it hard to distinguish between being a dick or an ******* in certain circumstances.

I say its a stupid concept because it is a bad replacement for true lack of bigotry

as some have said it its nothing to do with people using it as a scape goat(unles there *******s) its when it got to the stage where moronic things were getting banned cause they may offend somebody some day some where.

Yeah- but you're not other people and neither am I and there in lies the problem.

We all have our own parameters and it is a tough practice to form a synthesis on this thing.

Also a problem with political correcteness: it can get very condescending.

When did "p.c" become an insult? IMO from the time the term was invented.

from when it got stupid and long-i just had an english exam on this-political correctness became satirical when trying to make people from minority groups such as the disabled fell less generalised and made to feel small about themselves due to language occurred. it got out of control though for example where those who use wheelchairs were reduced to being called wheelchair users-the politically correct version would be "someone who requires the use of a wheelchair" it's too longwinded for modern day use. PC didn't become an insult the day it came about because the first deal of it being used came from Afro-americans being called afro-americans instead of simply blacks-a really offensive term at the time.it symbolised independence-from then on danger words were sorted out an groups of people eg.the disabled were called something politically correct so they weren't generalised, in the case of disabled people it doesn't specify how they are disabled nor if they will be for a matter of weeks or if they have a terminal disease-they are now referred to as differently abled wich seems ok to me.It's pointless though when the PC term is too long-i'd use it as an insult if someone is trying to please every minority group at once-there's no way to please everyone

That's all I've been hearing on fanboy boards discussing the new Batwoman, "it smacks of P.C. entitlement, it's nothing but political correctness," etc. Granted, going overboard isn't the best recourse, but when did diversity suddenly become a dirty word? I think people that throw around the race card are suddenly finding out they have rivals, people that throw around the term "P.C."

I don't know that it's P.C.... more like simple sensationalism... making her a lesbian simply to get news coverage... I'd let it slide if it were something they did to a character that's been around awhile, but starting off a new book like that seems more a publicity stunt than anything else...

Remember all the coverage D.C. got when they "killed" Superman??? Didn't stay dead very long, did he???

EDIT: Damnit it didn't edit out. Where are my rights. I want this word asteriked.

Turning Political Corectness in to an insult is a tool for people who don't want to progress society in a fair one for all. They want things to stay the same, back in to the old days when slurs were considered acceptable.

You are wrong.
"handicapped", "disabled", "short", "overweight" and "Black" are not "slurs", and deeming them "slurs" is the very ridiculousness of the PC approach to language that has sparked the backlash.

Tangled Web, please read over the thread (particularly my post) to see why Political Correctness has become a term of insult.

Well, you could be talking about getting soaked and just missed the space.

In a nutshell, it because an insult when those who practiced political correctness started to use it as a tool to shut down legitimate debate because they didn't like the fact that they were losing the debate.

I think it is more insulting for us to take an entire group of people from an unrelated culture and name them after ourselves, i.e. Native American or African American. Not to mention that anyone who has exceptionally dark skin gets called African American, regardless of whether or not they're from Mozambique or Brazil. A lot of people have become so obsessed with being PC they're actually offending those minorities, with the most recent case being that now text books refer to Indian tribes as "Native American Culture Groups."

In this case it means American in the geopolitical sense, not the cultural. A "Native American"'s anscestors were the native people of the land area called America. Same thing with African-Americans. No matter where they are from some of their anscestors were at some point from Africa. Take (black) Brazilians for example. Most may not be of 100% African heritage, but it's not inaccurate to say they have some. They now live in the area called America, so they are African-American.

"Native American Culture Groups" I can see too. Tribe implies a specific community. If your talking about the Cherokee or Souix or something, they are not one group, they are a bunch of similar under one name. Though the name is rather convoluted.

Not to be combatative or anything. Just my two cents.

Well, obviously you are right about silly ones like that. But when someone accuses you of being a PC thug when you take offense to terms like "Red Indian" or "Slanty eyed" "Wetback" "Spic" "Colored" ect. that's just an example of it becoming an insult.

Anything politically correct can suck a fat one. I'll say whatever I want.
But would you say it right to their face, though? There's a fine line between freedom of speech and just being stupid.
