When Does the Comic Book TV/Movie Bubble Burst?

Westerns were popular for 50 years, so that gives us at least 35 more years. :ninja:

With the announcement, one can assume WB wants to release at least one superhero movie a year as part of their tentpole franchise. Add that to Marvel doing 2 a year, Sony doing one Spider-man related movie a year, and Fox with one a year, I can see the bubble bursting by the time we get to Avengers 3.

Some Westerns might come closer than you'd think when adjusted for inflation.

I find it interesting that people don't see this as nothing new. In the 1930's to the 1950's serialized fantasy/sci fi was a staple in theatres and eventually on TV. There's nothing new under the sun.

When will the bubble burst? When people stop wanting to see culturally beloved heroes in grand spectacles. So far.... Yeah, that aint happening. But carry on ya'll.

Currently westerns are done as very indie flicks or satirical, like Cowboys and Aliens and Seth MacFarlane's newest. Open Range was like the last real one. Unless you count True Grit.

Honestly, I don't see this as something that will burst, will they slow down? Yes. But you have Marvel on top of the world right now, then you have DC/WB trying to get out of the gates. We're in for a WCW vs. WWF like war between Marvel and DC, after that ends is when we'll see them slowing down on the superheroes. But that is a long time away.

I don't know about the rest of the world but I'm already burned out with the comic book genre. I haven't seen any of these movies in the theater for awhile. I'm more jazzed about the new Godzilla movie next month.

I only go to the theater for superhero movies.

I can't really justify paying over 10 dollars for anything else.

Even though I do wish I saw Gravity in the theater that was a rare case.

It certainly feels like it's about to burst, but it's felt like that before.

People love superheroes.

It's undeniable.

Now theoretically, could oversaturation turn that love into resentment?

Possibly.

But 4 superhero movies spread throughout the year isn't the oversaturation point. By mid-July, people will be hungry for another major superhero spectacle.

In terms of the movies I dont think its likely to burst any time soon, at the moment its getting bigger and bigger, with more CBM's announced almost weekly it seems. With Marvels second Avengers film and JLA on the way its going to become more crowded however and thats when problems could start.

From my own personal perspective I will have to become much more choosey as to which films I got to the cinema to actually watch. Things like Thor 3, ASM3 and IM4 (assuming they're announced) I would wait to see after being dissapointed by the last offerings and thats the way it would have to be going forwards, I didnt bother with FC after X3 and Origins, Transformers 2 left me cold so never bothered with 3 etc etc.

No doubt those films would still be massive anyway so I can wait for them when they're on rental or tv.

If someone does not remove a film from the slot fought over by DC/Marvel, a lot sooner than it should.

Sony and Fox are making just as many movies as DC.

I hint think it will be burst anytime soon but when the bubble bursts it'll be a combined effort from all studios.

However Marvel will have been the one to start the downfall by releasing two movies a year. They started the increased output and have amassed nine movies in just six years which is two more than Fox entire 14 year usage of X-Men and four more than Sonys entire usages of Spider-Man over 12 years.

That rate is what may end up being the tipping point. Even if DC, Sony and Fox go through with their plans to release a movie a year it'll only be one more than what Marvel is releasing all by themselves.

I think Marvel is trying to play with the calendar a bit by releasing movies outside the summer season. But all it takes is one bad year where both releases bomb, and the studio could be in trouble.

Marvel Studios is setting things up so it will be nearly impossible to have two bombs in a row.

They release riskier projects along with a sure thing.

GotG along with Cap 2.

Ant-Man along with Avengers 2.
