you gotta understand, there's over 500 issues of Amazing Spider-Man. If you want to go ALLLLLLLL the way back to the begining, to issues from the 60's, you can get the Spider-Man Masterworks or Essentials

but it's really not necessary to read stuff from that far back. Very few people have. There are good jumping on points from more recent years that are better places to start. An ideal place to start is the begining of the run written by J. Michael Strayczinski which is called The Amazing spider-Man vol 1: Coming Home (which I'd like to link you to but I can't access Amazon.com right now for some reason)

Does the volume you just mentioned start from the beggining when Peter is bitten?

I heard the series was rewritten at one point, when was this?

no, it doesn't

the volume that starts when he was bitten - that is, Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1963 - is collected in the Masterworks and Essential volumes. These:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...=pd_bbs_1/103-1636920-7963013?ie=UTF8&s=books

(the Essentiual volumes are in black and white and contain more issue, while the Masterwork editions are in color and more expensive. This is because the coloring process from 40 years ago was different then from today and so they must redo everything)

but again - it's not really necessary to start all the way at the begining

if you really really insist on it, your best bet is to get this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006Q7FEM/ref=sr_11_1/103-1636920-7963013?ie=UTF8

which contains 500 issues of Amazing Spider-Man on CD-Rom. I personally don't like to read comics on the computer, but if you really must read all the way from the begining, this is the most affordable way to do so. And let me point out that very few comic readers have ever read all 500 issues of Amazing Spider-Man. I've been reading comics for 13 years, and I never have. Never plan to, either, even though I like Spider-Man

there's also Ultimate Spider-Man which reimagines Peter Parker as though he were a kid today, restarting everything, with lots of little differences (since Amaizng Spider-Man has been going for 40 years, they've let him grow up alot and he's now about 28 and has been married to Mary Jane for awhile). Ultimate Spider-Man you will probably find to be closest to the movie, but just realize it's not the same Spider-Man that's been around for 40 years. But it is a very good read. Start with this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...=pd_bbs_2/103-1636920-7963013?ie=UTF8&s=books

After i have read volume 1 of the essentials would i then buy essentials volume 2 etc.?

Also, when do the essential volumes finish i.e. what comics start straight after the essentials?

Also, at about what comic number does "coming home" start?

EDIT: and end?

ok, this gets a bit tricky....

Currently, there are 7 volumes of Essential Spider-Man which collect up to Amazing Spider-Man#160 (along with several annuals and specials along the way)

Amazing Spider-Man started in 1963 and ran for 441 issues, at which point, sales on the book had begun to slip. In order to bring the sales numbers back up, the book was "relaunched" - instead of having #442, Wwe now had Amazing Spider-Man vol 2 which began in 1999 with a new issue #1 (readers tend to buy "Issue #1"s in higher quantities in the hope they'll increase in value some day). This volume lasted for 58 issues, at which point they decided to revert to the old numbers for issue #500. Currently we're on issue #534.

The volume "Coming Home" reprints the start of new writer J. Michael Straczynski's run on the book, which is vol 2 #30-35. JMS has been writing the book ever since, for about 5 years now, and the entirity of his Spider-Man stories have been collected in something like 10 volumes currently available. Again, as this is considered an ideal jumping point, collections (also called Trade Paperbacks or TPBs) of the current Spider-Man stories are now listed as "Amazing Spider-Man vol 1" begining with ASM vol 2 #30

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...3584/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-6492494-4209429?ie=UTF8
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...3584/ref=pd_bbs_5/103-6492494-4209429?ie=UTF8
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...584/ref=pd_bbs_10/103-6492494-4209429?ie=UTF8
etc. ....

Although there are many Spider-Man loyalists, to most comic readers, the majority of Spider-Man stories prior to this were mediochre. When JMS began writing the book, however, the concensus was that the quality of the title had VASTLY improved (though of course there are a few nay sayers, but they are a minority). Thus, this is seen as the ideal "jumping on point" for readers who wish to check out modern day Spider-Man.

Many of the Spider-Man stories published in the 20 years prior to the volume will not be collected into trades, at least not any time soon, because they are seen as unimportant. Enjoyable reads for DIE HARD Spider-Man fans, but for most people it is an era that has little appeal, and is certainly not necessary to read in order to appreciate the newer stories. Any facts and events that happened during this period when refered to are easy to pick up. For instance, it's not at all necessary to read the story where Peter and Mary Jane married to read a current story where they've been married for several years now.

sorry you asked? :D

Glad to hear it!

Yes, Revelations is the next volume. That also contains the 9/11 issue.

Any other questions, feel free to ask. I'm always happy to help new readers

okay thank you

you have all been really helpful!!

Amazing is ok, but honestly, in terms of quality, Ultimate Spider-man is so much better. And like these guys have said..the movies are based off the comics..but with major deviations in the movie plots...eg. Spider-man 1 had MJ thrown off a bridge and surviving, the original comics had Gwen thrown off instead, and she died of it. So the movies aren't really true to the comics.
