Where did the Xavier family fortune come from?

just wondering. I don't know if it has ever been detailed in the comics, other than they were just rich. I wonder did any of the Xavier family investments while Charles was growing up came from exploitation of mutant labor? It would make for a rich irony.

His father was a nuclear scientist. They make a lot of money not to mention he also worked on a lot of top secret projects and was probably well compensated for his silence. On top of all that he died unexpectedly at a fairly young age and probably had a couple of huge life insurance policies.

Xavier's family is supposed to have been rich for many generations but AFAIK they have never given any details. They're old money dating back to colonial times.

This is waaay old, but I recall some past explanation mentioning him and Erik finding Nazi gold on early adventures. I don't know if that was ever retconned or addressed. It's been ages since I've heard that.

Considering the X-books history, time travel. Lots and lots of time travel. They had mutants showing up all over the place for decades leaving messages and caches of gold and jewels spread all over the place a few inches under the lawn. Eventually it got so bad that there was a small earthquake and the entire lawn erupted with gold and they had to build a mansion around it to hold it all.

Magneto flew off with the gold at the end of the adventure in which they found it. It financed his activities for may years, Secret bases, weapons, etc.
