Come-on! Marvel has no intention to include ROM in the next cartoon or live action cinema event while fans wait for it to happen. Rom the Space Knight is nothing more than a background character for their more popular IPs. Marvel should give back the character to Hasbro, and maybe we fans of Rom the Space Knight might finally get a live action movie about him.

Doesn't Hasbro own the rights to the character? Pretty sure they do. Or is this a divided rights situation?

It is a complex issues, regarding Rom the Space Knight. Rom was originally created by the Parker Brothers. Afterwards, Marvel comics created stories for Rom, and Hasbro purchased the rights to it. However, full rights to use Rom may not be in Hasbro's control, since Hollywood director James Gunn tried to make a Rom movie but was blocked by IP issues. Unfortunately, Marvel is writing comic books for Rom.

Not Rom but some of the other Space Knights stuff that I think was in Rom lore from Bill Mantlo. Also, more recent Rom the Space Knight comics were published by IDW through a license by Hasbro. So I don't think Marvel/Disney have any media rights or claim to Rom but they might be able to use other elements of his lore.

Where you you all 12 years ago! - Which Marvel hero who hasn't been in a movie would you most like to see?
.
Just extend this into 2hrs by adding a few cg Bay explosions and you have a summer blockbuster!

It is weird, both Marvel and Hasbro own different aspects of the franchise.
I think I would rather see him as part of the Hasbro Expanded U, if that is still a thing?

...as will Hasbro.
^.
Of course the purist will kick, scream and complain the whole way.

WOW Action Man is also part of this Universe!?

As a 70s-80s toy fan, This is actually so ridiculous it's pretty freakin amazing!
They are unabashedly celebrating exactly what they are, a toy company, looking to sell toys!.
And transparently jumping on the shared universe band-wagon, going full force, marketing this 70s-80s kid mash-up fantasy as a shared universe.
Does that = a good movie, no. But if they are going forward, this hot-toy-mess is a great way to approach it! :oldrazz:

That it upsets some stuffy no-fun purist, who is trying to convince himself their toy universe and toy characters are above all this, just makes it all the more fun!

... fun, over the top approach necessary to launch this supposed shared Hasbro Universe.
Which is a bit insane, but that's part of why I like it.
I could see putting someone like Gunn on the franchise you'd want to use as the anchor, for the whole thing.

Looks like they want to put F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious) on the MASK portion of it. Which makes great sense. -

But I don't think MASK is the anchor. That will probably be the 2020 GI. Joe reboot/relaunch.
And if they are starting with the more vintage take on the Joe Adventure Team discovering this shared universe.
I can totally see someone like Gunn pulling that off, they'd be lucky to get him for it.

I mean if the concept of this doesn't look fantastic to you, then you are in the wrong thread.
Honestly they should choose the director to anchor this franchise, based on the litmus test of how they react to this insane box-set.
If the potential candidate is like, I don't get it, this doesn't look serious, why is there a Transformer and a Joe in the same box? Who are the little guys in the middle? What is ROM? etc.? Are you just throwing random franchises you own together to shamelessly cash in on the shared universe trend?
Then show them the door, and say yes we are.
However if their jaw drops open, dumbstruck, with them going- that is so beautiful like peering into a realized cut-away section of my childhood brain, you would need an incredible shared movie franchise to explain it all!
Then that is who you should hire.

I think they abandoned all that because they couldn't get any of those projects made. Supposedly a 52 episode Micronauts animated series got made and finished, but then it was written off and put in a vault never to be seen.

Minor good news though. Hasbro made a new Marvel Legends Rom the Space Knight who is now available for pre-order.

Sold out on Amazon right now but I'd keep checking back.

I think James Gunn said at one point he wanted to use Rom but was told they couldn't legally. So, that's why you never got a Rom movie or appearance

So that would suggest that Hasbro controls Rom's media rights and I think they also have his comic publishing rights. But since Hasbro has the Marvel toy license, they can do things like make a Marvel Legends Rom figure based on his Marvel comic history.

IDW published a newer Rom series as part of a Hasbro comic universe that started in 2015.

What a shame! Marvel won't do anything with ROM pass comics, with their Disney MCU movies, and Hasbro can't do anything for ROM besides making toys for it. ROM, not being commercialized for movies audiences, has hindered the evolution of this character. For example, look at the different iterations of Marvel's Ironman in comics from his first armor to Superior. ROM fans should put more pressure on Hasbro to acquire complete rights to this character, given Hasbro's movie outlet Paramount was recently brought by Skydance.

Actually, the original creator of ROM permitted Marvel to continue developing his story, but Hasbro was also allowed to make the toy. This is why Hasbro can't task Paramount Studios to produce a ROM movie. Disney won't make a ROM movie because they are too busy with other "bankable" IPs, and they won't allow Hasbro or any other company to use ROM, for monetary reasons. Sucks!

I don't believe that's accurate. As far as I know, Hasbro still owns and controls the IP.
