Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Man this was a pretty boring movie. I don’t know much about GI Joe or its characters so I wasn’t upset about the changes they made to Snake Eyes but I just found it boring in general.

This was deeply mediocre. The only good thing I can say about it is that Andrew Koji and Samara Weaving both looked really good :atp:.

Also, was it just me or was Henry Golding really bad in this? He looked so ridiculous trying to be angry and intimidating. I’ve only seen him in Crazy Rich Asians which was a pretty basic role but I had heard lots of good things about him. None of that good acting was on display here IMO .

I agree. Henry Golding seemed miscast. People wanted Henry as Bond but he just doesn't seem believable as a action star

This movie has ended the career of veteran Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos. Deadline singled out the failure of Snake Eyes as the final straw for parent company Viacom. Paramount hired a younger CEO and is moving towards a future with a heavy emphasis on streaming.

Who knew that the director of The Shaggy Dog and Norbit would now be the head of Paramount lol

But was Viacom actually expecting a Snake Eyes movie with no A-list talent to do well, even without a pandemic? Sounds like they wanted him out anyway.

I think it was the decision to go theatrical only with the release of Snake Eyes that did him in. Viacom controlling shareholder Shari Redstone was also disgusted with the numerous delays to the release calendar and wanted Top Gun 2 out day and date instead.

At this point they have to pay people to watch it

Mortal Kombat was fun for a non-fan, IMO. I’m not a fan of GI Joe either and this movie was just plain boring (as a movie in general and not just a GI Joe adjacent movie).

I haven’t seen the film yet but… Snake Eyes actually
fights a giant snake? WTF?

LOL Yup. It's this goofy weird scene. The Arashikage have a snake pit with giant snakes. They test ninjas if they are "pure of heart" and worthy of joining the clan. It's dumber than any GI Joe cartoon ever made.

It's also a bit of tonal whiplash because the movie sort of goes for this more realistic grounded style and then OOP, giant snakes.

Yeah the giant snakes made no sense at all and I was wondering if that was something from the comics or the cartoons, but even if it was it still looked really out of place in this movie which was mostly grounded.

I'm betting that's were a good chunk of the budget went too since the studio probably felt like they desperately needed someind of big budget effects in the movie, but it was so unecessary and silly IMO.

Just saw it, what a mess. It completely ruins every aspect of the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow dynamic, and even if you take it as an elseworlds version of the character he's basically a selfish, untrustworthy prick. Storm Shadow is well within his rights to be pissed at Snake Eyes by the end of the movie, it's a failure at creating a hero, nevermind Snake Eyes, and the giant snakes and combustion inducing Sankara stone are laughable, while the Baroness and Scarlett exist purely to link G.I. Joe and Cobra in, both can barely be described as paper thin characters, Samara Weaving will never get an easier paycheck.

Finally got around to seeing this and I didn't hate it or find it nearly as awful as most seemed to. I know next to nothing about the G.I. Joe world so the changes were whatever but I was entertained, liked the characters for the most part and actually would have liked to have seen a sequel

Is this crap available at no extra charge on some streaming service yet?
