Wild Things Reshoots
Jonze's kid fantasy getting retooled.
by Brian Linder

US, June 2, 2008 - If you've been following the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, you'll already know that there's been drama surrounding the fantasy production. Today, we've got a status update on the troubled-yet-anticipated project.
Being John Malkovich filmmaker Spike Jonze is making the live-action/CG movie, but word surfaced in February that studio higher-ups weren't too keen on the work that he'd done. Reports claimed it was thought to be "too weird" and "too scary," on top of likability issues with starring child actor Max Records. In fact, there were rumors that the film might be entirely reshot.
Now we've heard, via Bloody Disgusting, that a month's worth of reshoots have been scheduled, and that new casting calls have been announced for various stand-in parts. The reshoots will reportedly take place in Los Angeles on June 5-30.

Jonze's vision of Sendak's classic may be too "wild" for execs.

Just how extensively the project will be changed is not yet known. It's not even clear at this point if Jonze is involved with the reshoots, but we'll have more Wild news as it breaks.

Where the Wild Things Are's current release date is October 16, 2009.

Hopefully it still has that "moody" feel.

Atmospheric and creepy sounds exactly like what Where the Wild Things Are should be. When I was little it even freaked me out. Plus this is not a film soley for children. Many generations of people read this as a child and will go back to see it. That should be kept in mind.

God, I hope that Spike and his crew convinced WB not to do anything too drastic.

I mean, out of all of the studios now, WB is kinda hurting in 2009, so they need a good movie.

So Where are the Wild Things?
Source: Los Angeles Times July 12, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures this week took director Spike Jonze's big screen adaptation Where the Wild Things Are off of its release schedule after it was previously pushed back to a fall of 2009 release. So what's the official word? The Los Angeles Times talked to Warner Bros. chief Alan Horn, who said:

"We've given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film," Horn said. "We'd like to find a common ground that represents Spike's vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn't call it a problem, simply a challenge. No one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized studio movie. This is a very special piece of material and we're just trying to get it right."

The adventure follows the adventures of Max, a head-strong young boy who leaves home after having a fight with his mother -- only to find himself in a mysterious forest bordering a vast sea. Misunderstood and rebellious, Max sets sail to the land of the Wild Things, where mischief reigns. Catherine Keener, Benicio Del Toro, Forest Whitaker, Lauren Ambrose, Catherine O'Hara, Tom Noonan, Michael Berry and James Gandolfini star.

This doesnt sound good.

Yeah, he's making it TOO arthouse apparently.

oh **** sake
so its now official that its getting reshoots
curse you hollywood
curse you x2

I think, even with a reshoot, they can still pull off sort of an edgy Where The Wild Things Are film. I have a lot of faith that it will be good.

i just want to see spikes version

"hmm ok Michelangelo we all really love what your doing with this statue..its great..it really is..but...we are kind of going for a younger target audience, he will need to be covered up..thanks"

What the hell are the Brothers Warner even doing. Just dump the movie already so I can see it. It ain't getting in better sitting on a shelf.

Does the WB just like wasting money. What did they think they were getting with Jonze directing?

I was wondering that too. They should have played it safe and hired some paint-by-numbers director like Chris Columbus or Brett Ratner not someone who is capable of making something high concept and visionary but un-marketable.
