So, i really like the whole gritty and realistic feel of the new Batman films, and was wondering which comic books people would recommend? Many thanks :]

Batman: Year One
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
The Man Who Laughs

All of those go well with the new movies, and the first two I listed were actually inspirations for the new movies. It's possible that The Man Who Laughs is also an inspiration for TDK, though it hasn't officially been cited as a source yet.

If your looking for "gritty and realistic" Year One is the only comic from that list that fits.

The Killing Joke was the only Joker book that they gave to Ledger to look at for the part, too.

I highly reccommend Gotham Central if you're into that grim and realistic crap.

Any of the 'Gotham Central' books (Unresolved Targets is probably my fav)
'Batman Year One'
'The Killing Joke'
ummm
'The Long Halloween'
'Batman: Blind Justice'

For me the essential ones to read are...

Batman Year One (highly)
Batman Year Two
Batman Year Three
The Dark Knight Returns (highly)
The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Batman: The Long Halloween (highly)
Batman Dark Victory (highly)
Batman Hush
Batman The Man Who Laughs
The Killing Joke (highly)
