Which of these pulp heroes would you like to get a reboot most?

I'd like a new movie of...

  • Flash Gordon

  • Buck Rogers

  • The Phantom

  • The Rocketeer

  • All of the above

The Phantom, without doubt. Second is Mandrake.

Flash Gordon, I consider him to be more of a space opera character.

Voted - All of the above.

Those are mostly pulp era comic-strip heroes though(exception Rocketeer)*
And if you're doing Flash Gordon & Phantom, Mandrake and Lothar need movies too.
So hopefully under the same license, they can build to a Defenders of the Earth / Kings Watch movie..

Some more possible reboots of actual pulp (and radio) heroes:

The Shadow.
Doc Savage
Zorro (full origin of De La Vega has never been done)
Lone Ranger (sadly already needs a redo)
Green Hornet (sadly already needs a redo)
Conan (sadly already needs a redo)
John Carter (would have been fine with a sequel, sadly now needs a redo)
And Solomon Kane (just needs a sequel.)

*ok Buck began in Amazing Stories pulp.

The Phantom.

I think The Rocketeer was a good movie.

Elric:

Fantasy touching on SF with elementals, demons and dragons would be a nice departure from the elves, dwarves and goblins of Jackson's Rings Cycle. Given that this character influenced Alan Moore's work and Neil Gaiman's Morpheus (as well as SFF authors such as George RR Martin), I'm surprised he hasn't been adapted to film.

I voted for The Rocketeer. Remember when that movie was released, a really charming movie.

^Yeah.

I'll go with Rocketeer. Superman1 aside, he had the best superhero film of the 20th century, IMO.

Phantom has so much potential.

But it actually require genuine effort and talent.

Think BTAS level creativity with a POTC production.

Like to see all of them. The Shadow and Rocketeer are probably my favorite though.

Would love to see The Shadow as an HBO show.

Of the ones listed in the poll, the Phantom.

But of pulp era heroes, the ones I would reall like to see given the proper treatement are:

Conan (never been done justice)
Kull (never been done justice)
Solomon Kane (just needs sequel)

One of my highest wishes moviewise is for Marvel to buy the entire REH estate, and do the prehistory of the MCU, with Roy Thomas style Conan, Kull and Solomon Kane.
Pipe dream for sure, but man that would be something - and probably the only way to see them done proper justice on screen.

Would love to see an Elric movie.
But created after 1950? Just how loose are we using the term pulp hero?
Shouldn't they at least have originated in a pulp magazine? Or at that time period?

I get Rocketeer is a huge throwback character, but Elric? Pulp?

To nitpicky?;nd

Eh, as you say it depends on how you're using the term. The Elric stories that're collected as the novels The Stealer of Souls and Stormbringer were published in Science Fantasy magazine. Since they were first published in mags, I figured Elric would qualify as a pulp hero. Of course, some people might take issue with me calling Elric a hero. He isn't nice, and is rather dangerous company...but he ends up doing the right thing.

I'd rather REH didn't fall into Marvel's hands. I admire their ambition, but only enjoy a couple of their movies. I wouldn't want to see REH's stuff turn out in the vein of the majority of the other Marvel movies.

Holy oiled bananas, that would be awesome.
I wonder how such a film will stand out next to other space adventures/cosmic hero teams (Star Trek, Star Wars, GOTG etc)

Defenders aren't as powerful as Avengers, Justice Lague, X-Men or Fantastic Four. What should the writers do to make Mandrake & Co interesting?

I think all individually and then together it's still different enough from those that you list, it would stand out on it's own.
As to what to add? A couple of the ladies, Dale Arden, have Aura rebel against her father and join them, add Mandrake's Princess Narda (as the martial arts expert) and Lothar's girlfriend Karma, and Phantom's Diana Palmer.
