Mario Puzo, along with a few other writers, is credited with the basic storyline of Superman: The Movie and Superman II. Was the basic plot, i.e.- The missile test/earthquake Lex scheme, the Supervillians, and others the work of Puzo? If not, which story elements in these movies were of his original ideas? Which ideas were Mankiewicz's ?

The DVD explains that Donner and Mankiewicz took out some ridiculous scene of Superman flying by Metropolis and Telly Savalas from the TV show Kojak waving him.

He basically took out alot of the "camp" (Ottis not withstanding!) and tightened up alot of the dialouge. He broke the movie down into three segments (Krypton, Smallville and Metroplois) and wrote each one differently. Stilted english on Krypton, a more Norman Rockwell approach in Smallville and then a comic book approach once we hit Metroplois. Listen to the commentary on the DVD with him and Donner as well as the documentries and you get a better understanding of what he brought to the movie.
