A year before Whedons contract with marvel was up the Russos were confirmed as the directors of Winter Soldier little did we know the impact these guys would have on the MCU.

Even after Winter Soldier came out I don't think anyone would have guessed they would be the ones to helm Avengers 3 and 4. The guys who directed community? Was winter soldier a fluke? The Russos would prove us all wrong with Civil War and that they were the choice for Avengers 3 and 4.

Marvel already knew they had a winner on their hands as the Russos were announced as the directors for infinity war 1 and 2 a full year before Civil War was even released. Marvel knows how to spot talent when they see it.

After helming 4 of the biggest films in the MCU the Russos will likely part ways with Marvel in 2019 following Avengers 4. Whether they remain on in some in some sort of advisory/consultant role remains to be seen. But you can't deny the impact the Russos have had on the MCU but no one would blame them if they cut ties completely.

That said with the Fox merger just around the corner the MCU is about to get blown wide open with the xmen and F4 coming home this could entice the Russos to leave that door open and return some day after a long holiday.

With that said.if they leave the MCU will need someone to step into their shoes and whoever that is will have big shoes to fill.

Potential candidates could include the captain marvel directors. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. If the movie is good and marvel wants to keep the trend of having a pair of directors, having a female and male duo would be great. Getting them to helm Avengers 5 and 6 would be a huge win for marvel. And would set the stage for the next era of the MCU.

Markus and McFeely also deserve credit for the success of the Russo films.

The Russo Brothers were hired from relative obscurity; can Kevin Feige capture lightning in a bottle again when he scouts for new directors in Phase 4?

Justin Lin (Star Trek beyond, fast and the furious 6) would be fun

Off the top of my head, Adam McKay or Brad Bird.

The Duffer Brothers seem well-suited too (but I might want them more for X-Men, and then we they can get the hand-off for later Avengers films with X crossovers :cwink:)

Originally I reckon James Gunn was probably being prepared by Disney to replace the Russo Brothers, but now I wouldn't be surprised if they bring back Jon Favreau to oversee the Avengers films once he's done with The Jungle Book 2.

The Russos have made it sound like in a recent interview they want to do more with the MCU, went as far to say they would love to do Secret Wars if the Fox rights came home...

Gunn was suposedly to take control of the intergalactic side of marvel, rather than directing individual films.

No one. They are the best cbm directors of all-time and have pulled movies that are almost unpullable like CW and IW. Them and Markus and McFeely of course.

People don't realize how huge of the task those 4 people had. They are essential responsible of some of the most hyped movies of the decade and the culmination movies of the biggest francchise in history.

And they pulled it off. I can't think of anyone who can replace them.

I think that the Russos will direct at least one more Marvel movie after Avengers 4 but they're most likely going to be taking a break from it for a while since this is pretty much all they've been doing for going on six years now. As for Markus and McFeely, I think we'll be seeing a lot more MCU scripts from them in the future given the success they've had.

I doubt he'd have just been overseeing though. No director worth their salt would take on an overseeing role. They'd have surely let him direct at least one other cosmic franchise that wasn't Guardians, if nothing else.
