Just wondering, was there many contenders or was Kilmer always first choice? I read somewhere that Daniel Day-Lewis was considered. Thats an interesting choice,he is a superb actor,I think he would have nailed it.

No, I don't think he would have. Kilmer is a fabulous actor, too, and look how that went.

I heard that Dean Cain was considered, but was ultimately rejected because he was already Superman on Lois & Clark.

From the articles I have and based on what Schumacher has said in interviews, Kilmer was his only choice for the role. He saw him in Tombstone and wanted him before Keaton even made up his mind.

And the poor man even signed before reading the script.

I read that Schumachers first choice was Kilmer (kilmer got the call while in a real life 'Bat-cave' and agreed over the phone.

The studio however had thoughts of casting Tom Hanks (there first Choice) and Mel Gibson (one of there choices pre Batman 89)

I believe Kurt Russell was up for consideration after Kilmer exited, and before Clooney of course. But I havent heard of anyone after Keaton being considered other than Kilmer. Schumacher reportedly felt Kilmer would make a great Batman after seeing the film, Tombstone.

^ Kurt Russell was actually a choice after Batman & Robin, when the series was going to go darker again. But as far as i know not after Returns.

Tom Hanks?!! Thats gotta be a joke!

i know i thought that too, but really it aint. Gotta remember i suppose, hewas big actor around 1995.

A bit ot, but why did Kilmer not return for Batman & Robin?

Well he and schumacher had a troubled relationship making Forever and he opted to go for the "the Saint". Poor guy, from one turkey to another,he could have been a megastar.

Kilmer and schumacher famously never got on so much so they got into a shoving match outside Kilmers trailer. Kilmer stormed off in a sulk and acording to Shumacher never spoke to him for 2 weeks after that.

Schumacher said it was the best 2 weeks of filming. (Schumacher also mentioned in an interview how the cast never really got on with Tommy Lee Jones having a huge ego on set and even bullying Carrey who he found 'annoying'. In contrast Batman and Robin was great to film he said)

I vaguely remember hearing something about Jones telling Carrey that he didnt think he was a "Real" actor, but I'm not sure how true that is or not. But yeah, I havent heard much good about Tommy Lee Jones getting along with people on that particular movie.

The only official consideration for a Keaton replacement was Kilmer. Anything else is really unconfirmed rumor and I wouldn't but into it.

Why did Kilmer not return for B&R? Obviously it was a good choice but I've always wondered why.

Read above, him and Shumacher had a fallout.

I seem to recall that O'Donnell almost didn't return for B&R either cause he was offered "Men In Black".

In the BF DVD, I think he stated that he had signed on for 2 films.
