Who is the best detective in all fiction.

Personally, I think Sherlock Holmes is. I know, typical answer, but I think its typical for a reason. Sherlock Holmes is so perceptive that he can tell where a persons been and what they were doing just by looking at them. He always manages to see the fine details of an area that everyone misses. And has figured out crimes that would be deemed unsolvable, during his time period. I would say Jimmy Kuddo is the best, but the creator of Case Closed specifically went out of his way to make Jimmy exactly like Sherlock. Now even though IMO Jimmy is probably a better detective, he would have never existed if not for Sherlock. But if you want you can rebut that he is better and easily win that debate.Now I've been having this debate with a friend(Batman fanboy), and I think Bruce is smart but definately no Sherlock. Batman has been baffled far too many times to be considered on his level IMO. From what I've read from the fine works of Aythor Conan Doyle, I must say that Holmes is a better detective than any I read or seen so far in fiction, unless someone else would like to add their 2 cents.

In all of fiction, I couldn't tell you, but as far as the comic book medium goes, Tim Drake has the potential to become the world's greatest detective, surpassing even Batman himself, as stated by said character in Robin #136.

If technology and brains make Batman better than Holmes, then Lincoln Rhyme is far better than Bats. Both as a forensic specialist and a criminalist. Professionally, both Batman and Holmes fall under the 'amateur detective' category simply because they are not professionals.

Exactly. And he did he always figured out the mystery no matter how elaborate the plot. He could tell how strong or what hobbies a person is into just by looking at the. In batmans first encounter with Clark, he couldn't even tell their was something strange about him.

Read the essay of "The Guilty Vicarage" by W.H. Auden. Technically, Holmes & Batman do not fall under the same league of professionals. Holmes's brilliance was recognized by Scotland Yard. And yet, he pursued cases out of his own curiousity, without a license and sometimes without consent or notification of necessary parties. The pursuit of Professor Moriarty was a more a private matter. Holmes's formal education and training was not directed towards detective work. He only later applied his mind to that field.

Criminalists like Lincoln Rhyme are more professional. Although curiousity is what partly drives Rhyme to his work he is formally retained. He is also able to testify as a witness, and has recognized credentials that can support his deductions.

Detection is reactive, not proactive. You detect after a crime. Holmes didn't stop crimes from happening either. He solved them.

That said, Holmes is the greatest detective in fiction, ever. Technology does not make one a greater detective, it just amplifies talent. Holmes is tops. Followed by Batman.

Will Graham, IMO. He caught Hannibal Lecter, a foe who was of exponentially greater intellect than he was.

Holmes was good, but he always had the advantage of being way smarter than the person he was trying to catch (with just one exception, of course).
