Mark Gatiss on Sherlock series 4: “You can expect tragedy as well as adventure"

“You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes,"

Freeman himself has suggested [Mary will] be killed off "at some point”, because that's what happens in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.
“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did," Freeman told The Telegraph earlier this year. “So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

"Just because it’s in the stories doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the series because there’s an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do," he says.

"It should be clear by now that while, of course, Doyle is our absolute god, we have gone quite a long way away as well – we’ve introduced Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents [for instance], I don’t think they’ve ever been seen in any adaptation – so there are lots of surprises to come.”

Is this gonna be set in Victorian times? :oldrazz:

I sort of expected this when they said they would be filming something extra

I'm so excited for it!!

Victorian Sherlock? I'm there!

As a big big fan of the show this all seems a bit pointless. I'd rather another episode that will further the actual canon than one that will likely be a reflection of Moffat's recent Doctor Who work which is just all over the place with heavy handed references.

It sort of snuck into S3 a bit with Moffat's being by far IMO the worst of the three by just being about nothing than an hour and a half WELCOME BACK episode which would be fine if there wasn't only 2 episodes left. That's why I like Gatiss on the show, he seems to give more structure.

I loved it. The twist about tying it back into the current timeline was genius...

Gosh, how amazing is Cumberbatch in the Victorian period?

This mad me even more excited for Series 4, even though I liked Series 3 more than most. I was scared about Moriarty being back but it will be great.

Loved the little nods to the original stories with the obese Mycroft.

The acting was great. Everything else was a complete mess.

As a massive lover of S1, 2 and parts of 3 as well as S5 and 6 of Doctor Who it's sad to see Moffat's writing just decline into almost parody.

We'll put a twist mid way to show how the episode isn't about the Bride but about Moriarty but then act smug as we see say "He could be alive but is dead but I know why he's dead but I won't give you the answer I'll just say Sherlock knows it but he won't tell the audience. The end."

Absolutely loved it. Had to watch it a couple times to really get it.
I think a lot of the writing segments went over a lot of people's heads or just too complicated. The references were spot on.

Knew something was weird when Mycroft said, "the virus in the data."

Dang it, I forgot to watch it! :cmad:

The fan reaction to this has been interesting - really divided. Makes me want to see it even more.

Eeh, not really. Sherlock himself explains the premise of the plot [BLACKOUT]after "waking up" the first time[/BLACKOUT].

They weren't being exactly subtle when they placed dramatic music and zoomed in on him when he said it.

The whole special was nothing but a big bait and switch filler episode.

Better than nothing...

I didn't think it was, it was all completely pointless.

The episode was about how a man who clearly died by shooting himself 2 foot from Sherlocks face surviving. Only to at the end have to protagonist smugly say "oh no he's dead don't be stupid". It's that typical comedy Steven Moffat line that brushes off a massively important plot point and hopes you forget.

If this episode was all the bride and the last minute was the reveal in the plane then I probably would have liked it a lot but the entire episode shifted at the halFway point and relied on the modern day story.

This entire special has been Moffat's (and I'm aware Gatiss cowrites) writing since s7 of Doctor Who and S3 of Sherlock in a nutshell. He comes up with great ideas with no resolution. And then cobbles together things to make a convoluted plot and makes it flashy with fan service so you don't think about it. For example look at the Sherlock/Moriarty scene at the classic Reichenbach Falls waterfall, they even pretty much say "isn't this how it should be?" As a nod to the classic Holmes stories but when you think about it and if this is all in Modern day Sherlocks mind why the **** is he picturing him and M at waterfall he has no association with?

Does Moffat consider a feminist movement to be a terror threat?

I had more trouble understanding the quick snippy dialogue in a 1890 setting.

Moffat waves away a nagging question "How did Moriarty survive?" with a quick "Oh don't be silly. No one could survive that"

The "Is it a dream or not a dream?" was just another version of Doctor Who's "Last Christmas"

Also a little bit reminiscent of "Inception" too

Also poking fun at the endless theories of how "Sherlock" survived the fall

"Let's not go there again"

Moffat considers himself a feminist and liberal, despite his critics, but this episode IMHO fell flat on its face in that execution.

Pretty much this. Nothing against Moffat, but I think it's time for a new showrunner on Doctor Who.
