Why do they always put X.99 $/£.. or sometimes X99.99 $/% at the end of a product on sale rather than a rounded number?
Psychological.
The part that registers most with our minds is everything before that period.
I'd be more willing to buy something without a second thought at $3.99 than if the price tag were $4.00, even though I know what the price actually is.

I'm planning a bus trip 30 miles south to look harder.
Actually it has nothing to do with pyschology. In the olden days before sales tax, merchants would put $4.99 rather than $5.00 so the clerk would have to open the register with every purchase to give the customer change, thus making sure the clerk wouldn't just pocket the money. Giving change for every transaction allowed for a more accurate register count.
