Why 99?

Psychological.

The part that registers most with our minds is everything before that period.

I'd be more willing to buy something without a second thought at $3.99 than if the price tag were $4.00, even though I know what the price actually is.

Precisely. Simple, but effective and it only loses them a single penny.

Like a car for 4995 basically its 5000 just looks cheaper at 4995

shouldn't there be a rack of stuff behind you with $X.95 on them:huh:

Hmmm, this thread makes me want to go out shopping.

Actually it has nothing to do with pyschology. In the olden days before sales tax, merchants would put $4.99 rather than $5.00 so the clerk would have to open the register with every purchase to give the customer change, thus making sure the clerk wouldn't just pocket the money. Giving change for every transaction allowed for a more accurate register count.

History is always cool. Doesn't completely shut out the psychological factor it has today though.
