Why Can't DC Get it right?

A small budgeted Books Of Magic could appeal to that Harry Potter/Percy Jackson crowd. Plus, you would be using it to reintroduce John Constantine. Follow that with a Sandman franchise (another Hellblazer appearance) and you're then ready for spin offs of Hellblazer and Death. There you go...a full on Sandman franchise, Hellblazer and Books Of Magic...and you start with a small budgeted kickoff.

I like Sandman as much as the next fan, but I wouldn't want to see it on screen....then intricacies are what make those books what they are...you lose that on film

Are there any DC properties that you would be willing to watch on screen???

Let me guess...Martian Manhunter???

For all of the complaining about DC not doing anything, the standards fans set for them are unreachable. Ghost Rider??? Oh do whatever...Fantastic Four?? Yeah, Jessica Alba sounds about right...Sandman?? No, thats impossible...dont ever try it.

DC/Vertigo....Id love to see Preacher, preferably as a TV series....The Boys (formerly Vertigo)....Booster Gold (I think that could be a great comedy if done right), Nightwing, The Question

I didn't mind Ghost Rider, Im not a super huge fan of the character so I really didnt get worked up about it and the FF movies are just meh...Alba being the worst part of them, I have no clue how or why she was cast

what bugs me is that Sue is supposed to be the adult of the group....she's supposed to be the one that makes Reed stop working and eat something, keeps Johnny in line, and cheers Ben up...

in the films shes just Reeds angry ex who gets caught up in all the crap

Who would you have direct Preacher?

I'd love to see what QT could do with it... although I think he'd try to put some twists of his own on the source material, when the book itself is good enough already...

I still think The Question is the way to go with DC, its cheap and flexible for pretty much whatever money they want to throw at it and it would let them test the waters to see how smaller budget features could do for them.

Ideally Preacher should be a TV series.....trying to cram it into a film would make it seem rushed, you don't even get to see the Grail until volume 2 in the trades

Weren't they working to make it a HBO series... I heard that somewhere a fai while ago... Still in development hell?

Alba was a total miscast. She got the gigs because she was the 'it' girl back then.

and she looked awful in part 2; she's a girl from a Hispanic background so to give her the fake looking 'contacts' and super blonde hair made her look weird. she looked much better in the first film.

I guess....HBO is giving me A Game of Thrones so I get at least one adaptation I am excited for

she looked Aryan....it was frightening

that's white..I mean right. haha.

I've always thought that that Alba's main features were her exotic looks and in FF2, she looked like a Hollywood Perez Hilton socialite.

With the promotion of Green Arrow on Smallville, I can see him getting his own spin off or the movie Supermax being made now. It is a small budget movie and could be done right. The only reason GA is being used on Smallville is because Batman is off limits for whatever reason. It's one of the problems with DC/WB is the unwillingness to expose other characters besides Bats and Supes.

Justin Hartley should have his own GA show, can Smallville move the show to Star City and lets kick this pig

The point is that there are several directors who could do Sandman right...

Plus, there are several Sandman novels that are basically random stories collected. You could do something cool and one random story in with another Vertigo film as a bonus short (probably animated).

I'm also a supporter of tv shows...but not a bunch of superheroes though. I would love a Vertigo tv show on SyFy (maybe House Of Mystery, but without the house) where you can adapt a different vertigo story every week, with occasional longer mini-series. I also think that more shows like The Human Target are in order...maybe 100 Bullets on a major network, and Preacher on HBO.

I think two superhero tentpole movies per year are enough from DC. Something epic like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern (which should not be a summer movie) etc in December and then your Batman or Superman in the summer.

which proves that those of us screaming "DC has no balls" are correct, they don't have a single nut in their sacs, and they show it year after year after year.

their unwillingness to expose a character not sporting the bat insignia or s shield IS GETTING RIDICULOUS AND UTTERLY PATHETIC BEYOND F'NG BELIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

like I said before, if you're not going to go out and give it 110%, if you're too afraid to promote a character because to you "failure is an option" then you need to step aside, get the hell out of the way, and let a studio (Marvel) with some real f'ng balls do the damn thing

So...you guys are using Smallville as an example of DC not being willing to promote other characters...in the same sentence as mentioning that they are promoting Green Arrow??

Smallville has thrown a bunch of characters out there...but, wait for it....it doesnt count, right?

It never does.

Yeah but they are with Superman.... It's like Batman B&B: It's ok to show them with Batman or Superman but it's hard to expose them on their own. A GL or Flash cartoon will kick balls but it seems we always get a new Bat show. Flash has some of the best rogues in comics but noone knows because they are not exposed. Just saying. :o

What better way to expose people to superheroes theyve never heard of than with Superman in an out of movie continuity format???

You want them to throw a Cyborg movie out there without giving him any advance rub??

The general public has never heard of these characters (even Martian Manhunter is a nobody) and DC is trying to raise their profiles for the future by putting them on their hit Superman show...and people are complaining...because NOTHING is good enough...and there will always be excuses why something doesnt "count".

I think not having Bruce Wayne on Smallville is a weird licensing issue....because I know before Smallville ever came out, the WB wanted to do a 'Bruce Wayne' in his younger years type show, but it never got off the ground

They are owned by the same company so I never understood that licensing thing. Like for whatever reason, WW can't appear on Smallville becuase they "have a movie in the making" bs excuse. They haven't used the character in live media for almost 30 years. It makes no sense.

no, solo's, that's all Im saying

not movies, not even live action, animated television. AT LEAST TRY, that's not really asking for much, is it?

I mean, how much of a gamble would it be really for WB to put out a 12 episode animated cartoon and promote the bijesus out of it? If it does well the rest will follow

It kind of is...but DC should get on the ball.

The thing is, DC has the trinity. Marvel cant mess with that, and likely will never have a bigger trinity to point to. However, there are obvious issues with Wonder Woman.

Outside of the trinity, DC is in big trouble. Punisher became well known in the general public before his movies came out. Wolverine did as well. Marvel has a ton of second tier characters that are semi-known to the general audience. DC has...nothing. Aquaman is considered a joke. Flash is viewed as slightly better, though his logo is often confused with Flash Gordon. Hawkman's biggest general audience claim to fame was as a numbskull in a series of comedy commercials. Plastic Man would have to be a comedy. The rest of the B-list heroes are copies of their A-list heroes.

DC SHOULD be doing more, I'm not denying that. I believe that a Vertigo Films division would be the way to go in the short term. I think offbeat unknown characters and concepts on tv could help. I'm not sure that there is much demand for a bunch of C-list superhero movies.

That said...apparently the next Avatar takes place under water. I GUARANTEE that after that, Marvel will move on Namor and DC will move on Aquaman. Instead, DC should jump out ahead of Avatar...and shoot an absolutely epic film with NO goofiness with top of the line technology, and schedule the release a few months before Avatar 2.

I'm all for a Wonder Woman movie, but everyone has their own specific idea for what it should be, and if the actress has slightly shorter hair or some other ridiculous difference, the fanboys trash it and deem the movie to be the worst thing since Hitler.
