Why do people think bane is over rated?

I mean who else that’s human can give batman a physical challenge in hand-to-hand combat. Most people that like bane because he is one of the few that can make batman used his combat prowess to the fullest. There are people who just like hand-to-hand combat, and that’s a big element of The Batman. Batman had to many Psychotic leaders that are nothing, when they confront the batman face to face. Its fun to have one guy that a physical threat to the batman. Its fun to have a villain that has too much pride to let others to the dirty work for him.

So please give me your thoughts, and a good explanation why he's a sub standard villain

I think writers who did not give a dame about bane, and made him look like a fool caused most of the negativity of fans view on bane. For example The Batman Animated serious when bane meets superman, only to make superman look good. We all know that Bane is human, I mean come on! The new video game, WTF Where is the real bane; he's not a big monster. That video game screws him up. Also Checkmate or what ever he's name beat the **** out of bane, just so he can get recognition from comic book readers, but no body knows who the that guy is. Most people, writers are useing, and making bane look bad, just so their crappy story, and new characters can look good. He is one of the few who found out the identity of the Batman, and broke his back in combat. Nuff said!

Yeah, he's been misused through out the past few years (Batman & Robin), but I've never really got the feeling that people feel he's overrated. More like writers didn't know what to do with him after Knightfall. Some what similar to Doomsday's situation.

He's a great villain when written properly, and I've been loving what Gail Simone has been doing with him lately in Secret Six. If you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favor and pick up the first few issues of the lastest volume.

Bane was great during Knightfall, after that not so much. He's served his purpose. Vengeance Of Bane was a great read, with some of the cleanest artwork from Nolan.

He's been great in Secret Six. The body builder dude, not the pig. :o

I think Bane is underrated. Everyone only sees him as a physical threat while completely discounting his intellect.

Bane is very underrated.

When people think of him, they think of big pumped up on steroids mindless muscle head because of the Batman and Robin film (and to a certain degree the cartoons)

Alot of folk don't realize that not only was he able to deduce who Batman was. He was able to strategically beat him and break his spirit in the process. It was never really about strength.

(He broke every criminal in Gotham free and waited until Batman was weary to confront him in the mansion and break his back.)

I personally think (if done right and closely to knightfall) Bane would make an excellent choice in the next Batman film. But really...how can you top the Joker? (ledger)

Bane is often accused of being one dimensional. The people who say that must not have read Vengeance of Bane. Great story. And it really humanizes him. Dixon fleshed him out considerably well in such a short period of time.

Damn shame most people don't have the wherewithal to understand that simple fact. :o

I never even knew people thought that Bane was overrated. Just thought he suffered what many Bat-villains went through during certain times, which is bad writing.

Knightfall was pretty good and I enjoy the Vengeance of Bane miniseries, or was it a one-shot? And I don't read Secret Six but from what I've been hearing about that book he's being handled quite well under Gail Simone's pen.

I think Bane's major problem is simply a lack of exposure.

To most, he's simply a mindless brute who appeared in the Animated Series and Batman & Robin and, years ago, came out of noway to break Batman's back.

His skill as a tactician, warrior and master planner are often terribly overlooked.

What character was is that bane was influence by? that was a born prisoner? I can not find it.

Originally, I was going to take the name MILFERMAN, but I thought it was too racially suggestive.

At a time, yes, I thought he was over-rated. Not that much now. Like AEON said, he served his purpose. Now there is nothing to do with him. Same with Doomsday.
Personnally, I think he is fake. When I read Knighfall, I knew he was fake from the first second I read his so-called "plan to destroy the bat". He reminded me of Kraven the hunter.
A physical challenge ? Deathstroke can do it, Clayface, Mr Freeze, and Killer Croc ! I think Hush was a better villain than Bane because Hush is clever AND can fight the Bat. So from this point of view, I think Hush succeed where Bane did not. And for wild fights, I think Croc works fine. the fact that Croc is not over-rated works for him. Croc can be a crook, a henchman, a bad guy. Can be like a boxer or a fighter or an animal. Croc is better than Bane, IMO, for the physical threat you were talking about.
I think Bane works fine as a henchman. A powerful one, right, but just a henchman.

I much prefer Bane over Hush. Bane is a cool and calculating tactician whose demeanor alone is scary. Hush is little more than an overly whiny psychotic brat who tries to be cool.

Bane could most certainly be integrated back into a comic story successfully. Heck, look at Hush himself, he was dead in the water until Dini came along and renewed interest in him.

People don't like Bane because they have read Secret Six and fail to realize that he is an intelligent and driven character, in many ways an anti-hero. A romantic and a poet.

Bane is one of the best Batman villians ever.

People probably think Bane is overrated because he has not been used in any kind of effective capacity since Knightfall.

The number one reason Bane is over rated because

1 He is terribly under used

2 The only image of Bane the general public has is a henchman not as his own man
thats because of the effects of BATMAN&ROBIN

3 They don't give him an actual motive he is just a 2-D character

The only way to re energize this character is to make a story line of bane that works maybe the origin and not the usual plotline of The man who wants to beat the Batman that plot line is just to corny they could do so much more if they actaully work with him

The fact that you think Hush is a good villain kinda invalidates everything you say.

Clayface, Mr Freeze, and Killer Croc .

Well killer Croc can be a human threat, if its just epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and not a mutant like in hush.
Never read, or saw Mr. freeze being a phisical threat in hand to hand combat to the batman. Even if he is , its not his style. Clay face is not human.
I dont think you get what I was trying to say. I was talking about martial arts. Bane knows how to fight, he is not just brute strength. In many ways Bane, and batman are like two sides of a coin. They both build themselves from scratch with strong discipline. Discipline that make superman strength seem weak. Batmans incredible self Disipline is his super power.
