Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

If I understand your point regarding Ebert's expertise......
....each one of them offered only an opinion, which is no more proof of the quality of the film than the opinion of the one.
Yeah. And I am waiting for th IMDB poll to come up. Which is funny because when you go to IMDB and read the user comments on the SR page, it is like 90 percent hate the movie. But then again, these guys have another excuse-"Only users who hate films post comments." Funny how most other films on their have user comments about how great the film is if it is a good movie accepted as a good movie by the general audience. Yeah, these excuses only seem to apply to SR for some reason. I mean there is an excuse for everything from these guys. It is why I coined the term "THE EXCUSE CREW" There is always an excuse.

It's like having 77% of good reviews but choosing one of the bad as "representative" to support your point.

Welcome to the Crew! :)

That is true as well, ALL of them offer opinions, however, in response to Buggs quoting one critic, i pointed out that around 75% of them liked it.

To Aveit....
But HOW could Jor-El speak a language that didn't exist during his lifetime??? He had been dead for thousands of years. English is not that old a language. I din't ask WHY he would want to speak English, I asked how he could possible speak English if the language had not even developed yet? And what about General Zod and crew? The cosmonaut spoke Russian to them, and they did not understand him (How could they?). Yet they conversed in fluent, late 20th century, British accented English. Impossible.

Its a movie dude. If you are asking this, you may as well ask how a genetically engineered spider can give a human super powers, or how certain mutants dont blow their houses taking all that time to learn to control them.

I didn't dislike SR because of it's boxoffice I disliked it because it had a terrible rehased storyline, bad characterzations and acting (Sleepwalking Spacey is who I'm talking about) and it portrayed Superman as a fratboy and Lois as a ****. And it forgot that a Superman movie should have a supervillain, we actually have the tech to do it now! Yes I wanted more action not a dumber movie more action because lets face it the movie couldn't get any dumber than it already was. Did I forget the miscast teenage looking Bosworth as a 35 year old mother? Yes I did so there it is! Enjoy. You liked the film because it didn't make more at the boxoffice apparently (correct me if I'm wrong) and I disliked it because of the above reasons.

You're being kind. I hated it for so many more reasons.

SR was not a good film IN YOU OPINION. IMO it WAS a GREAT Film.

No, SR was not a good film in FACT. I've always been diplomatic on here and respected people's opinions, but the simple fact is, just because you enjoyed a film, doesn't make it great. I love loads of movies which I frankly know to be poor, but I enjoy them anyway for my own reasons. That doesn't mean I have to defend their greatness. You are entitled to like rubbish films if they entertain you, and SR isn't even rubbish - its just average. To call it great is misguided; to be great a movie should have a good strong lead, good supporting cast, good story with strong character development, be beautifully shot, etc. etc. and sadly SR excels on none of these points. If it entertained you, that's wonderful, and as I said, I'm frankly jealous, but if you actually believe that SR was a great movie, and that years from now critics will discuss it as a classic, and hold in high regard (which is what happens to 'great' films), then you are either deluding yourself or have maybe seen about two other movies your whole life.

well, despite our differences in opinion, I actually agree with aveitwithjamon.

Whether or not a movie ( or anything else ) is good/great/terrible/crap is all a matter of opinion.

If aveit thinks SR is a great film, then that is his / her right. Just like it is my right to think SR was bad.

Same with Spider-man 3, for example. I loved it, but others on this board ( who agree with me on SR ) hated it.

It is all a matter of opinion.

I may not like SR, but if someone else likes it and thinks it is the best comic book ever......well then.....that is their right. They are not crazy, stupid, or delusional. They just happen to like that movie. I may not see what they see in it.....I may argue with them till the bitter end about why I didn't like the movie.......but that doesn't mean I can judge their reasons for liking it. If they liked it, then there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

With movies, there are no right/wrong answers. What matters is......if you saw the movie......did you enjoy the experience? did the movie entertain you and give YOU what you wanted? did the movie bring a smile to your face?

So you think liking a movie makes it great in your opinion? Weird, but fair enough. I happen to love loads of movies that I know damn well are not great movies, but entertain me. I also happen to know that a hell of a lot of movies which I frankly can't stand are spectacularly good films. Personally, I draw a line between "I enjoyed this film" and "I think this is a great movie".

I wonder what Shaq thought of Superman Returns....hmmm...

There is a difference, sometimes, between what is good and what you like. There are certain criteria, plot, characters, dialogue, that make a movie good. Even if you like something, if it is lacking in those areas, it is not a good film. SR was fun in parts, but it wasn't a real quality film.

I do agree that one can like a movie, while at the same time recognize that it is not a good movie.

Like when you watch a horror or comedy film that is really silly, stupid, and mindless. You know it's a bad film, yet you were entertained by it for whatever reason....and, dare say, actually enjoyed it.

on that point I do agree.

However, I still feel that the judgement of what is good/bad is based on one's own personal feelings.

For example, another person could watch that exact same horror/comedy film, and think it is the best movie ever! While we may not agree with that person, it ultimately is not up to us to judge what that person considers is good/bad.

Yeah, but some people have stupid opinions. Some people are not smart, have poor judgement, and don't know what's good. All opinions are not equal. I would never assume that I can judge paintings because I am not educated about that. My opinion has no real value as far as paintings go.

Good point, The more films, the more diverse the films etc etc that you have seen, the more you know about them, the better your opinion is.

It's so hard for me to explain to my nephews that Movie Sequel part II and part III are far worse than the original. Since they are young, everything in the world is new to them. They think loud noises, car chases, and explosions make a movie good. They don't understand when I tell them that after a while, they will have seen about a million car chases. Then they will realize that that is what crap movies have in place of dialogue and plot.

some people are saying that SR made a good profit from everything.

so how much money did TF make since it made 300 domestic and the budget was 150?

oh... domestically, TF made up it's budget and then some

Sorry, but this is the most ridiculous post i have read in a good while. If i think SR is quality, it is to me, simple. Plus i have seen THOUSANDS of movies in my lifetime, i have been watching movies since i was 2 years old, i'm now 25 and watch films nearly EVERYDAY, so stop being an ass and trying to claim you know so much.

If SR was such a bad movie, why did critics and many fans on the web think it was a great movie. Some examples for you

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...SubmissionDate&n=283926&qid=1188242999&sr=1-2. Out of 70 user reviews, it has a 4 out of 5 average, so all of those people are just kidding themselves?

http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=278890. Here also, out of 25 different choices, both old and new, SR is comint 8th in the 'Best Ever Comic Book Moviw thread.

Honestly, grow up dude.

Exactly Super-bats, we disagree all the time on here, but have either of us ever claimed the other was wrong about their opinion? No, have we ever insulted each other? Not that i can recall.

If only others could learn that.

You're pleading humility just to state your personal opinions are a fact.

Son, we're not that dumb...

I even agree with El Payaso on this one ( which is extremely rare....:wow: )

Personal opinions are NOT fact. Just because you think a movie is great/bad does not make that true for everyone else. Even if everybody else in the world thinks a movie is crap, if you truly enjoyed the movie and thought it was great for you........then the movie was great FOR YOU. Not for me, not for the next person........not even for the pitbull high on angel dust running around the neighborhood in a Wonder Woman outfit.........................it was great FOR YOU.

And, vice versa if you think the movie is crap.

I do concede that it is possible to enjoy/be entertained by a movie that you feel is bad/stupid.........

It's like watching a really silly/stupid comedy movie, or an equally silly/stupid horror movie......you know that it is bad......yet you still watch it....and are entertained for what it is worth. That is certainly possible.

However, to another person, said comedy/horror film may be the best movie ever! It's all a matter of opinion.

Hey I have an idea. Why don't we give Batman a son too? That's something that's never been done on film before!

If people thought SR was a great movie, they just need to watch more movies.
