Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

Easy to please i guess..I just cannot understand how a Superman fan can read stories like Superman for all seasons, peace on earth, whatever happened to the man of tomorow, action comics #775, kingdom come, all star Superman and think SR was a good representation of Superman...

I can't understand why you post this same crap already here beside the other forum. Deal with it & move on. Also, don't use that crap "how can Superman fans" like this. You're really trying to act like those who like SR are not real fans. That the problem with whining fanboys. :whatever:

And you still forgot to point Kingdom Come Superman abandon his friends early in the story like SR & you hate one of the part in SR where he abandon his friends for 5 yrs. You lost all points there.

actually.....here's the real reason why some Superman fans don't like SR........................it's the very same reason why some Spider-man fans don't like Spidey 3 ( or 1 and 2 ).................WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES!!!

Some like SR............others dislike it. Some love SR with a passion and think it's the greatest CB movie............others despise it with equal passion and think it's the worst CB movie......

Neither side is right or wrong. What matters is if SR, as a movie, entertained you and satisfied you.......

If it did, then that's great!! And, you have every right to post here to praise and defend SR!!

If it did not ( as it didn't for me ), then that's great, too!! And, you have every right to post here to complain and criticize SR!!

I thought it was rather boring. And I never Cared for a Hackmanesque Lex.

Another case of the pot calling the kettle black. I love your hypocrisy.

Nice post. :)

The answer to this thread is very simple.

Cause I thought the movie sucked.

I have listed my reasons many times, so I am not going to right now.

I think I have also posted that you thinking it sucked it not a reason.

So I guess I won't post it again.

I am sure you can find threads or posts where I throw out my critique of this movie and why it sucks. I am just kind of bored of constantly having to do it when the subject comes up.

Oh please. I don't whine on & on about the same thing for the last 2 yrs. like you with the suit. You're more of the whining type. I barely whine like that. Nice try, buggs.

Not to mention I don't act like I know everything like you do. You act like you know everything about the sequel & that it's dead when you have no hard proof to back it up. Again, nice try. :D

Oh yeah, at least I don't post a silly site on my sig. about hating the suit like it will change it. That is a very unhealthy obsession. You know there are more important things in life outside than focusing on the damn suit for the last 2 yrs. ;)

I gotta agree with nightwing, buggs... I hate the SR suit just as much as you do, but even I know when to just let it go and move on to better things.

Yeah. I respect you for this, man. We may have some disagreement & such, but at least you don't take thing a little too seriously like buggs does. I mean you just hate it & move on with your life. Some have to realize there are far more important thing in life than being upset over something for the last 2 yrs. on the costume, which is unhealthy. Not to mention to hope some change in the future, so everything is okely-dokey. ;)

So because we like SR we are not 'real' Superman fans?

^Seems that why. Some of things people come out with on this board astounds me.

I'm not a Superman fan, I'm a total Batman girl but I do have a soft spot for Supes and I did really hate Superman Returns, everything seemed so... plastic and fake. I didn't care for those characters, Lois was like a *****y barbie and the whole kid thing... I did like Richard though.

A friend and I met up on Saturday, and watched some movies and TV. When he arrived, i was watching X1. I then put on Superman Returns (I got the collector's box set for free).

While i ended up enjoying the movie more, my friend didn't like it all. Within an hour he left the room and came back with some college papers that needed marking and was marking them as the film played. Clearly, he wasn't gripped by it!

This friend of mine does not come on the Hype, he is not aware of the intricate and lengthy arguments for and against the movie on here, he is only aware that the film came out. I put the movie on and said nothing, except for a few times I actually defended it for its visual beauty when he was attacking the movie!

His views were that:

1) Brandon Routh was miscast, had no charisma and was fine as Clark Kent, but not at all good as Superman. He felt Lois and Lex and Richard were great on screen, watchable and convincing.

2) He didn't like the set-up for the movie - Superman leaving without saying goodbye. I never mentioned the long debates on here about this, he brought it up all by himself and felt it was a serious flaw in the writing that Superman just disappeared, that no one guessed where he had gone, that he didn't say goodbye to someone if they were obviously in love.

3) He didn't like the Christian symbolism at all. As soon as Lois mentioned the word 'saviour', he said 'Oh no, we're not going to get him portrayed as a Christ figure, are we?' and when he first flew into space he said 'Please, he's not going to do a crucifixion pose, is he?' He felt the imagery was 'laid on with a trowel' and that Superman is a hero and a champion, not a saviour.

4) He didn't like the muted colours. He said: 'Why is everything brown? There are NO primary colours in this at all.'

5) He didn't like Superman lifting the island at the end, especially with kryptonite growing downwards out of it and with a shard of kryptonite in his side. He felt it was 'not internally consistent' as a movie. I then said: 'What about Wolverine marching up to Phoenix in X3? People have complained that Wolverine's healing powers were increased in that scene to a ridiculous level'. and he said something along the lines of: 'But it's not the same level of inconsistency as this. Superman struggled to lift the plane, but he lifted an island after he was weakened by the kryptonite on it, beaten to a pulp, stabbed in the side, and still had some stuck in his side and some growing out of the island right next to him, and a few seconds in front of the sun is enough to recharge? I don't buy it.'

6) He felt the film had a 'nasty' side. He hated the ball being thrown for the dog (he said 'That wasn't very nice of him!'), he thought other elements were sadistic and cruel. (I suspect Dougherty here).

7) He felt the film included a lot of irrelevant scenes, like the henchman playing piano with Jason on the yacht which, he said, completely removed the tension and suspense of the scene. He didn't like the scene where jimmy tells Perry about the fax, and loads of other scenes that seemed irrelevant to the story and took away any sense of drama.

8) He didn't really like Jason, he felt it was a contrived plot device and that it was very obvious it would be Superman's son from the moment he appeared on screen.

So that's the view of an intelligent non-Hypester with an analytical mind... I just thought it was interesting to hear what he said.

I actually argued that the movie was visually/technically very well shot and he argued that it showed the difference between quality and entertainment, that the technical film-making was not enough on its own if the story and structure aren't good enough to create an enjoyable movie. I tend to agree: this movie does show the difference between 'quality' and 'entertainment', that the artistic merit of quality is not in itself entertaining, and that the popularity of something entertaining is not a sign of quality.

I completely agree here, there is no way a film about a romantic angle with a Superhero and a kid would make a great piece of film, when his character is so selfless for humanity.

Ditto!
Maybe SR was well shot and directed, but the script and characterization of Superman and Lois Lane were very mediocre, at least for non-conformist, demanding viewers and fans. ;)

^But people have differing opinions my friend/s SR is well liked on the internet whether you want to believe it or not, check Amazon.co.uk, this very web-site, Rotten Tomatoes and Empireonline.com, for evidence if you like.

Incidentally X-Maniac, great post!

Oh please. I don't whine on & on about the same thing for the last 2 yrs. like you with the suit. You're more of the whining type. I barely whine like that. Nice try, buggs.

Heh. Shows you how much you know. You just did. You are doing it right now. You were whining about us not liking the suit two years ago with posts almost exactly like this, and telling us what we should think and post and you are still doing the same thing. And you are still doing it two years later.

Here is an answer for ya. Maybe it is because I am doing it in a thread entitled " Why don't some Superman fans like Superman Returns?" A thread that asks why fans of Superman do not like SR. It does not imply what we can and can't talk about not liking about it. It is, in short, a thread for fans of Superman to vent and b***h about what they didn't like about the movie. Seems I am doing what the thread implies. But what I don't understand is why someone who likes the film is in a thread made specifically to hear the venting, ranting and b***hing about the film. Seems to me that you are in the wrong thread complaining about the very thing the topic of the thread asks the poster to do. And with many threads here with the purpose of gushing over the film, maybe you should go to one of those threads, and get off of my back. Because what you are doing is counter topical to the topic of this thread. There is some logic for ya.

No matter, the sequel will be a reboot anyway. And we will just see if that suit is the same suit when the reboot happens. Rumor is, it is already gone and the WB got the message from the masses-"Get back to the classic suit without any of this Singer/Mingenhack B.S.". And you know, it seems silly to lecture me about complaining about the suit for two years when you have been focusing on me complaining about the suit for two years. Again, the word hypocrisy applies. But you will of course try to find a way to explain how what you have been doing for 2 years isn't. You will probably bring up the tired excuse you guys bring up that complaining about something is not healthy when giving props to something is different, and there is no time length on how long that can be done. Sad thing is, you will find some way to justify in your mind that what you are doing is different when the reality of it is, it isn't. Your just doing the same thing I am but from the opposing side of the subject in question. Difference is, I am not telling you to not do it and you are. Because in the end, I really could care less about what you think. Put that in yer peace pipe and smoke it.

I want change. And change was never accomplished by Pascifism.

Speaking of DC Comics pics, it is highly unlikely that Bryan Singer will return to shoot the next Superman movie. (The director is finishing up Tom Cruise's Nazi film Valkyrie, and prepping The Mayor of Castro Street). The next Superman we will see on the big screen will not be Brandon Routh, but a younger Superman among a cast of youthful superheroes in The Justice League. That movie will likely not be shot, however, until after the WGA strike is resolved. Warners is so happy with Dark Knight that their fondest hope is that Nolan will return to do another Batman.

Death to Singerman
