Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

Sucks don't it. I think I am going to throw it in my dvd player, love the opening credits and john williams theme, then laugh mu butt off at the rest of it. I was going to use the dvd as a drink coaster, but I had my drinking glasses to be concerned of.

LMAO!!!

For the very same reasons that Bryan Singer was pushed out of the project and Brandon Routh and the entire cast and storyline cast out to the wind-It sucked.

Link, please? Oh, wait...that won't work. Even the well-respected Variety has posted unconfirmed rumors stemming from one blogger's opinion. So has Latino Review.

Until there's something official posted here on the Hype!, statements like that are merely hearsay. And last I heard, Bryan Singer was still directing the sequel and Brandon Routh is still Superman. Their only Kryptonite is this blasted writers' strike.

Yep. Until something happend, I'm not going to believe it. I'll believe it when I see it. People shouldn't always believe everything they hear or read. It all just speculation for now.

i agree. and that's the major problem here.........we are now over 1 1/2 years since SR came out......and we still have NOTHING OFFICIAL or CONCRETE regarding the sequel. all we are getting are speculations, rumours, and so called "reports" that just seem to contradict each other left and right.

and, really, the longer WB waits to make some official decisions regarding the future of the Superman franchise.....the more SR fans, SR haters, and the GA as a whole will lose interest.

at the very least, official news regarding the sequel would allow both sides here to move on and stop debating the same issues ad naseum......

maybe that was the plan after all... maybe they wanted SR to be a final film and then wait a few years until they relaunch it.

one possibility anyway

We'll probably never get any news sadly.

Its possible they are taking their time to make a Superman movie that the majority of Superman fans will like. I'd rather they take their time to make something amazing rather than rush some half-assed piece of tripe out SB.

I think taking their time is a good thing. If you rush it, you will likely make it a mess. Give it time to use new & original story. And making it good too. ;)

And I know SR was rush pretty quick after Singer & the writers were hired. I know that one of the reason some dislike SR.

X3 is the perfect example of a rushed movie not coming anywere near a lot of fans expectations, i dont mind them possibly taking their time with MOS, if it makes it a better movie, i'm all for it in fact.

Yep. They took a long time to do Batman Begins after Batman & Robin and it was worth it with how great BB was.

i agree. I'm not saying that they should rush and make the sequel....

i'm just saying that WB needs to make some kind of OFFICIAL announcement soon......about whether or not they are making a sequel....or reboot.....or psychadelic musical.....

at least we would know that they have OFFICIALLY started working on something.......

Exactly, it was more than worth it, i dont mind studio's taking their time as long as they deliver a quality product in the end, which i believe MOS will be.

Well, as of now, it seems BS is still directing and starting to work on the sequel, i guess we'll hear more news in the coming months. I for one, cant wait to hear what he has in mind for MOS. I think it could be amazing, and even pass SR for me, which everyone knows by now that i loved.

I definitely wouldn't object to loving the sequel more than "Superman Returns" (I'm sure people know I love it too).

I watched this on cable today and was reminded how bad it was. Everytime I see that scene with superman being pwned it just reminds me how much of a wussie they made supes. They took away the hero aspect of superman in that scene. I mean watch the part after superman catches lex's foot as he tries to stomp on him and is dragged away by the guy. Just listen to what is coming from supes. He's kicking and screaming and whining like a little *****. He didnt even try to fight back AT ALL. That really pissed me off because the supes I know would still try to fight even if he was powerless. He's still a warrior with or without his powers. They basically conveyed to the audience that superman cant fight unless he has his powers to protect him. And there's another plot hole with that scene. Why was he so powerless before being shanked by LEx? Before that point he should still had enough super strength to handle those thugs like nothing. He was in direct sunlight just moments prior to flying to the island so he should be fully charged. Yet after being saved by lois and flying up to the sun to recharge he's able to lift the entire island with kryptonite spears all around him. Big logic flaw there. Same environment two different results. This scene just really killed it for me as well as the whole kid aspect and stalking behavior. Richard acted more like superman than superman did.

*Superman being portrayed as an emo-ish, stalker-like deadbeat father

*Kevin Spacey pretty much phoning it in as Lex Luthor

*Singer basically recooking Richard Donner's left-overs instead of moderizing (a la what Christopher Nolan tried to do with Batman)

*Singer casting James "Cyclops" Marsden in a role that pretty much makes him out to be a bigger hero/more likable character than the Man of Steel

*An incredibily miscast Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane

*A movie that has a terrible sense of pacing and is anti-climatic

*A movie that's too dark and downbeat (both screenplay-wise and cinematography-wise) for Superman

*Asinine lapses in logic like Superman being able to lift up an entire island made of Kryptonite

*"Schumachering" Superman's costume (i.e. making unnessarily drastic changes seemingly for the sake of vanity)

*Superman being given no real challenge (he has to foil another one of Lex Luthor's hairbrained real estate scams) like a Darkseid, Brainiac, General Zod, or Metallo

Yeah it was hard to see Superman getting kicked around like that, but you do have to remember it wasn't that he was just powerless. He was surrounded by krytonite and his body was sickened and weakened by it. He wasn't just a normal guy at that point, he was hurting bad.

Now logically if you stop right there it makes sense to me, but then we next see him getting a super recharge from the Sun and going back and lifting the same very large chunk of kryptonite landmass into space. All I can attribute this to is his incredible will. Which is very much like the comic books. We even see the intense painful look in his eyes as he is rising higher into the sky holding "New Krypton" up. That is something to me they got right, Superman sacrificing himself to protect as Lex said BILLIONS of people no matter the personal cost.

But yes it would have been nice to see him at least get a couple of good hits in..especially one square in Kal Penn's face :yay:.

I love that scene with him charging up in the sun & using his strength along with his will to lift NK off the Earth, even when he know it's going to kill him. That was pretty noble & very much like Superman is with sacrifcing(sp?) himself to destroy NK, despite some not thinking so. But whatever.

But yes it would have been nice to see him at least get a couple of good hits in..especially one square in Kal Penn's face :yay:.

That would never happend, since Kal & Routh are friends. Heh! :p

Sure you can attribute it to his will in lifting the island. But that's like saying he doesnt have the will to fight in the scene prior. He may have been weakened by the kryptonite but there's no way in hell superman should be crying and yelping like a little girl when a guy is dragging him along the floor. He should be trying to grab a wrist or something and at least attempting to fight back. Superman will fight no matter what his state. He fought to lift the kryptoisland and he should have fought for his life when he was on it. At least throw a punch.. throw a rock.

And really i dont think his charge after being thrown off the island and before he gets to the island is any different. Just minutes before flying to the island he was in the city in direct sunlight saving people so his body abosorbed all that sunlight anyway. He should still have a full charge and it should be the same as when he flies up for a charge since it was cloudy afterwards. Therein lies the problem.. why is his strength drained so fast when he's getting his arse beat but not drained as fast as when he's lifting an entire island which should drain him faster. Oh and let's not forget the kryponite fragment still lodged in his side. Logic... not really one of the writer's strengths i guess.

Oh and he didnt destroy NK.. he hurled it into space with all the other crystals and once they go and hit another planet they'll start to grow forming a huge landmass of kryptonite and whatver else minerals are around it. If one crystal produces a new island and continent.. think of what all 7or 8 of those crystals will do once it hits a planet. Im pretty sure he did not hurl it at the sun since hte sun is on his left when he chucks it into space

It reminded me of the scene in Superman 2 where he got his ass kicked by the trucker guy; even as he tried to stand up for himself, he couldn't seem to do diddly without his powers to back him up. Not cool at all.

Now the bigger question - how/why it take so long for the Kryptonite to affect him? It's established that it only takes a little sliver to make him weak at the knees, and that was an entire island made of the stuff. By the logic of his comics, Superman shouldn't be able to even go near it, let alone land on it. He should have been feeling the effects way before he landed.

I could see if he had took an actual dip into the sun and came back, blazing with solar fire and lifted the thing, but all he did was float through the clouds, said "Hi sun!" Then went back down and did the impossible. Bad move.

EXACTLY! I dont care how much will power superman has.. he isnt going to survive that AND lift an island into space.

He didn't (seemingly). 'Cos he succumbed to the kryptonite by falling unconscious, hit the ground and then he seemed to flatline in the hospital. I'll note compact dirt or earth blocks gamma radiation. So does lead. If kryptonite is similar (lead blocks it) then the bottom of the landmass provided some protection for awhile. But even in comics and the like there have always been variations. And films always have the hero doing an impossible feat in order to be heroic. The question is are people going to accept it or not. I did. But I'm not everyone.

How can the bottom of the landmass provide protection if there are huge spears of kryptonite jutting and creeping out of it only inches away from his face? Or did you not see that scene? If the landmass shields him when he's below why not when he's on top? In the movie it took him a while to realize there's kryptonite all around. Just look at the scene where he sees his fingers. Ishould be the same principle. He should still have the energy to fight and not be totally powerless since by your assessment he should be shielded somewhat by the landmass. Lead only shields him from it if it either encases the kryptonite or encases his whole body. If any part of his body is exposed he will feel the radiation eminating from the kryptonite. And when did earth and dirt ever block radiation. The only thing that blocks it's effects is lead.

In the end the writers conveniently through out logic with respect to superman's universe when they needed it. And it's convenient to say he did it through will power to explain the plothole. So you're basically saying superman lacked the will to stop lex when he first landed on the island and saw lex come out.
