Atleast since there's nothing there yet. It's got a release date of 5-2-08 in case you didn't know.

I honestly think Favreau has just as good a directing head on his shoulders as a Sam Raimi, more than Bryan Singer. It's going to be a fine movie unless some unforseen freak-thing happens.

When I first heard that Iron Man was being released in May '08, that was my first thought, Memorial day, but it does make sense that they are going with May 2nd, Marvel has done very well with their movies opening during the first week of May, Spider Man and X-Men opened the first week of May and were Blockbusters, not saying Iron Man will do as well, but the history is there.

I guess so. X2 is the X-film that opened first week of May btw, the first movie was July 14th.

Actually the weekend before is the best weekend since the next is a holiday which guarantees a smaller 2nd weekend drop and still leaves enough time to reach July 4th without running out of steam. Just compare the multipiers of The Da Vinci Code with X3. X3 only has the edge since it opened so huge but I don't think we can count on the first Iron Man movie to open that big. X3 had 2 prior well received movies which built the fan base up.

he moved it to the first week of may becuause Halo is coming out on May 30, 2008. (In talks still) so jon wanted Iron Man to get a good start by moving the set date to May 2

it's whatever once you get into may its movie season, MI-3 failed because of tom cruise not because of lack of important release date, people where just sick of cruise

next year Pirates 3 is being released on like the 7th of may, and is there any doubt in anyones mind that, that movie isn't going to make like 250 million at the minimum

I thought SM3 had the begining of May '07.

Because that's the best release date, first weekend of May.

Also:

Spider-man - first weekend of May 2002
X-men 2 - first weekend of May 2003.

What movie came out close to Memorial Day 2002? Oh that's right, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, the movie that Spider-man outperformed.

Now that Spider-man 3 is coming out the first weekend of May next year, and Iron Man in 2008, it's pretty clear that Marvel is trying to brand this weekend as THEIR weekend. Much like Star Wars branded late May as their weekend.

'Nuff said.

X3 would dismiss your reasoning Vile.

Memorial Day is still the top weekend... Pirates will move to Memorial, but I wouldn't be surprised if SM3 would move up first just on Sony ego alone.

Early May movies are for studios who would rather "be safe then sorry." SM3 need not worry.

The movie was garbage. The way I see it, the first weekend of May is the weekend for 2 of the best and most successful Marvel comic book movies.

As I already discussed, the first weekend of May is typically a pretty fantastic weekend for a blockbuster movie, but it's been in decline in recent years after X-men 2. Marvel/Sony is bringing it back with Spider-man 3.

It's not going to move. That's the weekend Sony wants. That's the weekend they wanted for Spider-man 2 before they had to push it back 2 months.

That's why it's a great weekend. Spider-man 3 will have the headstart over everything else instead of being crowded or released in a muddle of ****ty pieces of garbage like Spider-man 2 in 2004.

Garbage in your opinion. It's still the top grossing film of 2006 (with a Memorial Day opening)....and it opened within a week of Davinci. The Spider-man franchise is more popular than X-men (numbers prove that), and history now suggests moving to Memorial Day would be a smart move.

Bringing it back for nostalgia? Hollywood goes with what worked most recently. Sony will take Memorial Day if they think they have the most anticipated movie.

Right, and they could move SM3 too.

A head start didn't help early May openers the last three years....
MI:3 (133mil)
Crash/Kingdom of Heaven (about a 100mil combined)
Van Helsing (120mil)

I agree that it's a big weekend....but the biggest weekend is still Memorial Day. If Sony has any balls, they'll move.

The first Spider-man movie opened up first weekend of May. The numbers support THAT release date. So is the third one. Iron Man is set for for the first weekend of May 2008. It's clear that Marvel is branding this as THEIR weekend.

X-men 3 will soon be overtaken by Cars and Pirates 2 anyway.

No they won't. Because Pirates of The Carribbean 3 is coming out Memorial Day. Sony is not stupid enough to make a stupid and ******ed move like that.

May 25th - Pirates 3
May 18th - Shrek 3

Once again, Sony is not stupid. This way, Spider-man 2 will have 2 weekends all to it itself before Shrek 2. And 3 weekends before Pirates 3. That is smart scheduling.

No they are bringing it back because it's close to the release date for Spider-man. Spider-man 2 was supposed to get released in early May as well, but delays caused it to get pushed back 2 months. This is the release date

Right, and they could move SM3 too.

Based on what?

No they won't. You know why? Because Fantastic Four is due out in mid-June.

A head start didn't help early May openers the last three years....
MI:3 (133mil)
Crash/Kingdom of Heaven (about a 100mil combined)
Van Helsing (120mil)

Twister - 1996
Deep Impact - 1998
The Mummy - 1999
Gladiator - 2000
The Mummy Returns - 2001
Spider-man - 2002
X-men 2 - 2003

I agree that it's a big weekend....but the biggest weekend is still Memorial Day. If Sony has any balls, they'll move.

No they won't. Sony does not want to be opposite Pirates 3. That would be complete stupidity and bad for the business of both sequels.

Kind of like the stupid and ******ed move that War of the Worlds made moving to 4th of July weekend? Fantastic Four was bullied out of that date...SM3 can and should bully Pirates.

Congrats on a good point.

That 'early May is Marvel's weekend' stuff is complete crap since they could have, but didn't, do it this year.

I guess you're too ignorant to be privvy on current events. Pirates 2 just SHATTERED the opening weekend of all time record holder Spider-man. It's soon going to out-gross Spider-man 2 and probably Spider-man.

There won't be any bullying from Spider-man 3 to Pirates 3. It's stupid pointless and ridiculous.

And no they shouldn't bully Pirates because that's bad business. There is room enough for both of them.

Congrats on a good point.

Spider-man, X-men 2, and now Spider-man 3, and Iron Man prove it's not crap.

They couldn't do it this year because of MI:3. MI:3 took the weekend first.

Don't make me post it Bromwell because I will.

What???? You own me? Why, because you posted SM2 twice in one sentence to make it look like more movies were beaten?

Yeah, competition and money are stupid, pointless and ridiculous. Let me guess, you're a business major? You have any connections with Enron down there in Texas?

Yeah, it's all about sharing...that's how it works.

Oh right!!! Because MI3 took early May, Marvel thought...

"Darn it, let's move to Memorial Day! Hope people remember a Marvel Movie is still coming out this summer."

Hahahahahahaha! You're funny Vile, seriously, that's good stuff.

I meant Spider-man.

Yeah, competition and money are stupid, pointless and ridiculous. Let me guess, you're a business major? You have any connections with Enron down there in Texas?

I'm a film student graduate from UT. I've no connection with Enron.

Here's the simple fact of the matter, putting Spider-man 3 in the same spot as Pirates 3 and closer to Shrek 3 is BAD business. It's bad for competition and it's bad for money.

Spread them apart and you maximize BO results and profit. Put them closer together and it will hurt the other.

Many movies for years were able to capitalize on the potenial of early May, pre-Memorial Day. Spider-man and X-men 2 are among the most successful at it, and came out in consecutive years. It makes sense that Marvel, Sony, and Paramount want to repeat this trend with Spider-man 3 and Iron Man.

Yeah, it's all about sharing...that's how it works.

That's right and Pirates 3 is NOT going to share with Spider-man 3. That's why you keep them farther apart.

Oh right!!! Because MI3 took early May, Marvel thought...

"Darn it, let's move to Memorial Day! Hope people remember a Marvel Movie is still coming out this summer."

Hahahahahahaha! You're funny Vile, seriously, that's good stuff.

Once again:

May 3rd 2002 - Spider-man
May 2nd 2003 - X-men 2
May 4th 2007 - Spider-man 3
May 2nd 2008 - Iron Man

It's not a coincidence. Iron Man could've easily taken the Memorial Day spot. There's nothing there. Instead they chose a release date closer to Spider-man, Spider-man 3, and X-men 2.

I doubt that it will open on May 2 becasue that's now the date that Bond 22 opens, and if you ask me, opening against Bond is a major problem. I'm betting it'll be delayed to either the 9 or the 16. And for those wondering why not memorial day weekend, I have two words for you: Indiana Jones, which is now set to open that weekend.

The weekend before Mem day is the most valuable weekend of the year, which is why Star Wars has always sought it out. If IM got that day, I'd be smilin'.:)

It's not Spider-man's day though.

That's the day Marvel wants.

If they can get good designs and teasers out this will kick Bonds ass. The last Bond was utter **** and I'm not looking for this to be much better. The design of the suit is going to be a major factor. Singer the suit up and this movie is screwed. Make it like the teaser and he could have a Bond killer.

The sooner Iron Man gets out the less it will have to worry about Batman. Batman will crush Iron Man as POTC did with SR.
