Why was Interstellar so hard for Americans to get?

Most of the box office was foriegn so obviously most didn't get it. It was a good film. Are our tastes that different?

i dont think they "didnt get it".

maybe its the genre.. Gravity has pretty much the same ratio between foreign and domestic... lets see how "The Martian" does at the end of the year :)

also when you look at some more films its not that uncommon.. for example skyfall had an even higher ratio there.

Interstellar's box office performance was hardly unique for that movie. The majority of expensive movies are saved by the international market these days.
