Well they're at it again. anothe Anime/manga is being turn into another live-action movie. This time its Wicked City (the second time around) but for english viewers.

Source: front page of SHH.

A few thoughts on this:

1. This has to be better than the low-budget (but still somewhat entertaining in a psychotic kind of way) live-action Hong Kong version of Wicked City from 1992.

2. The rape stuff has to be toned down. The original 1987 Wicked City (AKA Supernatural Beast City) anime didn't quite cross the line into hardcore hentai, but it came pretty close (sort of the like the director's other famous work, Ninja Scroll). The part where the fingernail blade heroine (whose name I forget) is captured and gang-raped by the demon men just ain't gonna fly outside of anime fetishland.

That being said, the spider-demon **** with the toothy cootchy does need to be in there. ;)

3. The Wicked City manga and anime were heavily influenced by John Carpenter's The Thing. There are going to need to be some tweaks to keep horror/monster fans from getting a "been there, done that" feeling.

Those are my main concerns, now bring on the movie.

It's hard to imagine how the film will turn out. Yes, it's going to be an english live action remake of a Japanese film, which Hollywood has recently been throwing tons of money at similarly based adaptations. But Wicked City is only going to have a budget of 50-60 million dollars, produced by a German Company called Stallion Film; a company I had never heard of before, and if Googled the search brings up practically nothing.

Considering North America as a whole doesn't have the prevalent rape fetish that Japan does, I don't doubt for a second that many of those scenes will be cut/altered. Plus, PG-13 horror movies seem to be "in" these days, and the article blurb did describe the film as a "sci-fi actioner" so it's possible that even the entire tone and feel of the movie is going to be angled in a different direction.
