WiiU

I'm really excited to see what the WiiU can do. I'm a Nintendo fanboy at heart and I gotta say I was a little disappointed by the Wii. I don't really like motion controls at all, it just doesn't add to the game IMO. I'm the kind of gamer that likes to sit down in a comfy chair, relax and just power game for hours and not many Wii games let me do that. I haven't really read much about the WiiU so I don't know what kind of control scheme it's gonna have, but I'm hoping for a more traditional gaming experience in the sense that I don't want to flap my arms like an A-Hole to play The Legend of Zelda.

The metroid/starfox rumour has been debunked, but you better believe well get one of those two at launch. Retro has been working on something very quietly for some time now. With Nintendo's focus on core gaming again, I think this is a great opportunity to show off the WiiUs capabilities with a metroid title in a console that a hardcore gamer can pick up.

I'm hoping so. All the Metroid games on the Wii felt like novelty games with the point and shoot mechanic. Other M was a step in the right direction IMO. Better than the others.

I thought of an idea...a multiplayer Dungeons & Dragons game where the Dungeon Master wields the tablet and uses the tablet to control the game while the other players using Wiimotes are the players.

Just from that, one can see so much potential in this. Just hope the third parties have similar ideas.

Wii U's "GamePad" Revealed
Iwata delivers the details via Nintendo Direct.

Yeah, that's definitely a match. Mr. Iwata thankfully didn't just hold the controller up for the camera, though, but went into detail regarding its final specifications.

First up, the controller has been given an official name. It's being referred to as the "Wii U GamePad."

Next, support for near-field communication is confirmed. As hinted at in Ubisoft's Rayman Legends trailer – which leaked to the Internet earlier this year – the controller will be able to interact with objects placed on its surface to activate a variety of in-game effects. (The square marking on the left side of the controller's surface indicates the placement spot, as many had guessed. Nintendo was quiet on specific examples of NFC, but that's probably just because the company doesn't want to reveal its software line-up until the Tuesday morning press event.

The other mysterious square, placed under the lower-right corner of the screen and sandwiched between the Power button and Battery light?

That's the TV Control button – which, again, is exactly what many people guessed it would be based on the leaked image. Pressing it will control the action of having your TV screen's image jump to the handheld screen for portable play, and vice versa. You can also use the GamePad as a remote control for your normal television viewing.

The analog control sticks are longer, now confirmed to be replacing the shorter, 3DS-style slider pads that the controller originally had in place when revealed at last year's E3. A new detail, though, is that the sticks are now clickable -- an extra button's hidden underneath each one.
The GamePad will also include gyro and motion sensors to pick up player movements.

We'll have more details as they become available, so stay tuned to IGN Wii U. E3 has begun!

E3 2012: Nintendo Shows Off Wii U Pro Controller
Nintendo's tablet-like GamePad isn't the only new controller Wii U supports...

Nintendo revealed during today's Nintendo Direct conference that Wii U will support a new controller separate from the Wii U GamePad. You can see this new controller below:

Just saw this in the main E3 thread. While I'm very happy Nintendo decided to use the 360 controller as a template, I wish they would rethink the right analogue stick placement. It's probably too late for that though.

That Pro Controller pleases me. I love everything they revealed today. Sounds like a lot of fun and a step in the right direction for Nintendo. Here's hoping the launch line-up is spectacular.

I'm expecting it will be. They're getting the boilerplate stuff out of the way today, they already said they won't be talking about price at E3 ... seems like they're shuffling things around so they can focus on games during their press conference.

Same if the stick placement matched the 360 controller. I would have been very happy. I wonder if the Wii U will get adapters to use the actual 360 controller ?

I highly doubt it.

Wasn't there some kind of third party thing that let you use the 360 controller on PS3?

WiiU is basically my focus this E3, so far so good.

I would be surprised if the WiiU was anything less than $300. I'm wagering it'll be a $300 to $350 price tag. The controllers are probably gonna be a little pricey too. Gonna be expensive, but it looks well worth it.

I'll say 300... 350 may be what it's worth, however.. Nintendo took a nasty hit on the 3DS and the 250 price point. I see them selling it it "cheaper" and taking a loss in hopes that sells are good.

Which, hopefully they will be.

I'm thinking $300. With a $200 Xbox 360 and $250 PS3, the Wii U just can't compete with a price tag above $300, especially considering how much larger the games libraries of the other two consoles are.

Hehe. Im more of a prime guy, but I love the series overall. In the wiiverse demo video there is a Samus icon so Im pretty sure were getting another game...metroid visuals in HD+online multiplayer? that would be pretty cool.

Overall Im pretty happy with this modernized approach and the 3rd party support so far. I say were getting a price tag of $300.
